Kid-friendly Chinese dinner in Suwon: cumin duck bones at Gang's Duck

We finished day two of a gifted-program camp at Ajou University and stepped out a little after 5pm again. Heading straight home felt like it would leave us too hungry, so once again we decided to grab dinner nearby before going back. A ten-minute drive brought us to Gang's Duck in Ingye-dong, Suwon.

This time we reserved the dishes we wanted ahead of time, which meant we could start eating right away without waiting.

Peking duck and dongpo-yuk reserved ahead at Gang's Duck

We had reserved half a Peking duck and dongpo-yuk at Gang's Duck ahead of time. The reserved name was right there on the table, so we knew immediately, and not long after sitting down the mains we'd booked arrived quickly.

Since the wait was so short, it made eating with the kids much easier.

Dongpo-yuk arrived first

The dongpo-yuk came out first. It looked glossy even before we tasted it, and it turned out to be truly tender.

The meat came apart easily with chopsticks, and the seasoning matched it really well. Piling the dongpo-yuk onto the bok choy and bean sprouts served alongside made for a great texture too.

The soft meat paired beautifully with the crunch of the bok choy and bean sprouts. The seasoning wasn't too strong either, so it balanced nicely with the vegetables. Best of all, the kids really dug into the dongpo-yuk — being so tender, they had no trouble eating it.

Half a Peking duck, carved and fun to eat

Next came the half Peking duck at Gang's Duck. Rather than just eating it plain, there was a lot of fun in trying different combinations. First we dipped the duck skin lightly in sugar. The pairing of sweet sugar with crispy skin was a bit unusual. Then we wrapped it in a pancake with cucumber and scallion, dipped in sauce.

Adding cucumber and scallion strips to the pancake gave it a crunchy texture, and the sauce and duck came together deliciously. The kids wrapped up their own pancakes too.

Garlic fried rice on the side

Since we'd been eating mostly meat and duck, we also ordered a rice dish, and the garlic fried rice paired well. The garlic aroma was subtle and the rice was light and fluffy, going nicely with both the dongpo-yuk and the Peking duck. Adding the fried rice made the meal more filling than just eating meat the whole time.

Hong Kong-style egg noodles too

For noodles, we ordered the Hong Kong-style egg noodles. The noodles were soft with good texture, and the shrimp mixed in were wonderfully tender. Since the shrimp weren't chewy, the kids ate them happily too. With meat, fried rice, and noodles all on the table together, it was a great menu lineup for a family meal.

Last came the grilled duck bones. They were dusted with cumin, which gave off a slightly distinctive aroma — but our kids usually love dipping things in cumin anyway. Maybe that's why they picked away at every bit of meat clinging to the duck bones. Watching them pick the meat off piece by piece, I was surprised at how well they took to this kind of dish too.

Where to park for Gang's Duck: the Suwon City Hall lot

Gang's Duck doesn't have its own parking lot, so we used the Suwon City Hall parking lot. Parking is free for the first 30 minutes, then ₩500 per 10 minutes after that. There's also a multi-child family discount, which we were able to use.

Once again we had dinner with the kids and worked through a good variety of dishes — the tender texture of the dongpo-yuk and the fun of wrapping Peking duck in pancakes stuck with us most. The kids really ate up the dongpo-yuk, and wrapping the duck with cucumber and scallion in the pancake made for a different kind of enjoyment. With garlic fried rice and Hong Kong-style egg noodles alongside, and finishing by picking meat off the duck bones, we ended up quite full. Since the reserved dishes came out right away, there was almost no waiting, and we got to try a good range of Chinese dishes at once — an easy family dinner out.
