Uijeongbu spicy sundae soup for solo diners: Yetnal Gyeongseong

In short

Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nokyang Branch is a sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup) restaurant with 60 years of tradition that opened on Dongil-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi on September 2. The extra-large eolkeun sundae (spicy blood sausage soup) costs 14,000 won and arrives in a portion big enough to regret ordering, and the opening celebration added a free tasting of chapssal sundae (glutinous rice blood sausage). For a filling solo meal near Eulji University Hospital, Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk is worth the trip.

Gyeongseong Sundaeguk is a brand-new restaurant that opened on September 2. It's not far from Eulji University Hospital, so it's easy to visit, and there's parking right out front too. I don't drive, so I took a bus from the hospital and walked over. On a gloomy day, a soup like sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) hits just right. I went during peak mealtime — I was starving, haha.

Since it just opened, they're running an event with an old-school lottery draw

Places open every day of the year are rare in Uijeongbu, and this one opens early enough for a late breakfast/lunch. Gyeongseong Sundaeguk has 60 years of tradition behind it, which is reassuring.

What are the dining room and group room like?

In the main hall of Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nokyang Branch, the tables have generous spacing so you can sit apart from the next table, and next to the entrance there's a door to a separate group room. We sat roughly in the center.

Inside, the table layout has plenty of breathing room. It's far enough from the neighboring tables to eat comfortably. I don't know how everyone finds out about this place, but about 90% of the seats were full.

In the middle there's a hallway leading to the restroom. The interior is clean since it just opened, but the restroom looks like it's still the one the previous tenant used.

Right as you come in, if you open the big door on the way to the restroom, there's a separate room set up for private group seating.

Even with 60 years of tradition, since it's a newly opened location it's clean and I like that, haha

  • Eolkeun sundae (sausage only, extra-large) ₩14,000
  • Chapssal sundae tasting portion ₩3,500

Two servings that feel like three, haha. If you get the uncooked takeout option, you could eat your fill for 16,000 won. They're giving out chapssal sundae for free as an opening event, so once the event ends you might need to leave a review to get it. Wi-Fi connects automatically via QR code too.

I really regret ordering the large size... it was way too much food, ugh.

Are the side dishes self-serve?

Near the kitchen, you can freely help yourself to side dishes and toppings. Onion, chili peppers, and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) come as standard.

Standard side dishes: onion, chili peppers, and kkakdugi

They also provide kimchi, doenjang (soybean paste), and salted shrimp as standard! There's also perilla seed powder and salt for seasoning. I'm the type who eats it without adding extra seasoning~

How big is the extra-large eolkeun sundae portion?

Ta-da, the food I ordered arrived. Unless you're truly starving, I'd honestly recommend against the extra-large at Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk...

The ordered extra-large eolkeun sundae set on the table

Because the portion is insanely huge... and this is the regular size... Just look at that plump sundae (blood sausage).

And now, as part of the opening event, they gave us a taste of chapssal sundae too? Looked like about 10 pieces. Earlier when we ordered, I heard them tell another table they'd run out, so I thought we wouldn't get any...

This is the chapssal sundae tasting portion from the menu. Can you see how glossy it looks? If you have a normal appetite, just the sundaeguk alone will probably fill you up.

Barley crackers for dessert and other touches for guests

Near the entrance of Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nokyang Branch, there are barley crackers set out so you can finish your meal with a little dessert! It had been a while since I'd had barley crackers, and they were delicious — the kind of taste you keep reaching for.

They even have hair ties and phone chargers on hand — a place that really looks out for its guests in small ways. Having a barley cracker with a sip of coffee and patting your full belly afterward — that's the best, haha.

If you want a hearty, filling meal in Uijeongbu, especially for solo dining! (Soju plus sundaeguk is unbeatable.)
