Vegan cacao protein shake mixed with water & milk: Cleanit Cacao

In short

Cleanit Cacao Protein is a 520g pouch of plant-based protein shake powder delivering 19.2g of protein per 40g serving. The writer, who is lactose intolerant, mixed it with 170ml of water while her husband tried it with 200ml of milk, and both found it blended into a rich cocoa color with a not-too-sweet cocoa-drink taste. With no added sugar or artificial sweeteners, it felt like a good option for pregnant women or diabetic diets too.

Lately a lot of people are grabbing protein shakes for a quick breakfast or to make up for protein after a workout, right?? I was also on the hunt for something easy to eat, so this time I tried Cleanit Cacao Plant-Based Protein Shake!

Pouch of Cleanit Cacao plant-based protein shake

Since I have lactose intolerance, I'm usually more interested in plant-based protein products than ones with milk protein, and since this one is vegan and cacao-flavored, it seemed like something I could enjoy without worry.

Cleanit Cacao Protein: the 520g pouch package

The product I received came in a 520g pouch. It had a bright yellow color with purple lettering, so the packaging really stood out!? True to its name, it's a plant-based protein shake made with cacao, and being a vegan product, it seemed like a solid choice for anyone wanting to get their protein from plant sources instead of animal ones! Good good.

19.2g of protein per 40g serving

Looking at the back of the package, one serving is 40g. Here's what's in 40g:📋

  • 159kcal
  • Carbohydrates 14g
  • Sugars 2.6g
  • Fat 3.5g
  • Protein 19.2g

That's what's packed in there. You can get about 19g of protein per serving, which seemed really~ great for a busy morning meal replacement or a simple way to get protein in after a workout.

Dark cocoa-colored plant-based protein powder

The powder is a deep cocoa color and the texture was finer than I expected. I could already imagine the cocoa scent!! Let me measure it out and try it myself.

170ml water, 200ml soy milk — how to drink it

The instructions said to mix 40g with either 170ml of water or 200ml of soy milk per serving.

It also said mixing it into espresso makes a latte-like drink!!

Setup ready for mixing the protein shake

Since it was morning, I prepared 170ml of water first..!

Shaker bottle filled with 170ml of water

I was curious exactly how much that was, so I used a kitchen scale to measure it precisely. I placed the container filled with water on the scale and zeroed it out, then

Measuring 40g of powder on a kitchen scale

scooped in the powder with a spoon (it was actually a baby formula spoon haha)

I measured out the recommended 40g. The powder was very fine, so it mixed together fairly well when shaken,

How did it taste mixed with water?

It quickly turned the color of rich chocolate milk~ You know how some people can't handle protein shakes because of that chalky, artificial taste? So I was curious how well the cacao flavor would come through.

Looks thick, doesn't it? The finished drink is a smooth brown, like a regular chocolate drink. When I actually drank it, the cacao flavor came through, and the typical plant-protein taste wasn't very strong!

It wasn't overly sweet, just a nice amount of cacao flavor, which made it easy for me personally to drink without any hesitation! Especially for people just starting out with protein shakes who might struggle to keep it up because of the taste, this cacao flavor seems relatively approachable and easy to get used to.

Protein shake prepared as a breakfast replacement

My husband's reaction to it with milk

I made it for my husband as a breakfast replacement with milk (since we didn't have soy milk ㅜㅜ)

Cacao protein powder prepared to mix with milk

Same as before, I added 40g of powder along with 200ml of milk and shook it well.

Cacao protein shake mixed with 200ml of milk

My husband's verdict after drinking it with milk was that it wasn't as sweet as rich chocolate milk, more like an unsweetened cocoa drink, and with milk it came out smooth and nutty! He also said the artificial taste and smell typical of protein shakes wasn't strong, so personally he enjoyed it.

For anyone who's usually put off by protein shakes that are too sweet or too heavy, this one seems really~~ good 😃 With just a shaker, you can whip it up easily in the morning, so I thought it'd be great to keep around for busy days!

Who this is for

  • Anyone looking for plant-based protein over animal protein
  • Anyone looking for a vegan protein shake
  • Anyone who wants an easy way to get protein after a workout
  • Anyone who needs a simple meal replacement for busy mornings
  • Anyone who likes cacao-flavored protein shakes
  • Pregnant women wanting to get more protein
  • Anyone managing a diabetic diet

I actually got test results saying my protein was low because of pregnancy and childbirth..ㅠ Since it's not easy to always get enough protein through food, I thought it'd be nice to have a product like this that I can just mix into water or dairy. And on top of that, it has zero added sugar or artificial sweeteners, which is a huge plus not just for pregnant women, but for middle-aged and older adults and people on diabetic diets too!? Moms-to-be, get your protein in!!

Wrap-up

Cleanit Cacao lets you get 19.2g of protein per serving, and the fact that people looking for plant-based protein can enjoy it too was a really clear strength!! What I liked most personally was that the cacao flavor cut down on the usual resistance to protein shakes. Especially since I usually feel unwell after drinking straight milk, I liked it even more because it tasted good mixed with water or soy milk too.

If you don't want added sugar, want to eat healthily, are pregnant, or are looking to get more protein into a diabetic diet, and you've been searching for a plant-based protein shake — give Cleanit Cacao a try too.
