Euljiro tteokbokki combo at Hyeonseoni-ne, a Seoul Korean restaurant

In short

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is a Korean restaurant in Jung-gu, Seoul, serving pocha-style street food and instant tteokbokki. I dug into the Hyeonseoni Combo Set, dipping mini gimbap, sundae, and fried snacks into its chewy tteokbokki sauce. Verdict: a generous, nostalgic snack spread I’d happily return for.

Introduction to old-school Euljiro-style tteokbokki

I found tteokbokki with real old-school Euljiro vibes

I found tteokbokki with seriously proper old-school Euljiro vibes. Hyeonseoni-ne does Korean street food so, so well! I visited the Cheonggye Instant Branch. It has that pocha (Korean tent-bar) feeling, it brings back school-day memories, and most of all, the food is seriously... delicious. The best!!

You’ll spot Hyeonseoni-ne’s cute sign next to Mega Coffee. Head in on the right here, haha. This snack bar actually began as a pocha in 2004, so those vibes are totally alive and well! Even though it wasn’t peak time, it’s clearly a popular spot—people kept coming in in little groups.

They have every Korean street-food classic you can think of: tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), sundae (Korean blood sausage), gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), fish cakes, fried snacks, and even ramyeon. As you’d expect from an old-school Euljiro tteokbokki favorite, they also have instant tteokbokki. I wanted to try a bit of everything, so I ordered the Hyeonseoni Combo Set. You can choose the spice level too, and medium was just right!! The prices are really affordable overall, and the portions are huge, hehe.

Isn’t this combo set unbelievably generous, seriously?? Two skewers of curled fish cake, sundae, mini gimbap, tteokbokki, and all kinds of fried snacks! You won’t find this kind of flavor and abundance at this price anywhere else. They piled every item on generously. Plates, utensils, and water are self-service :-)

Tteokbokki with plenty of sauce

Dipping everything into chewy tteokbokki sauce

First up: the tteokbokki, with bouncy-chewy rice cakes, fish cakes, and plenty of sauce, making it perfect for dipping everything in. Even the medium level had a nice kick and was seriously delicious?! If you’re craving heat, I think the spicy level would be perfect. The rice cakes are so chewy, soft, and springyㅠㅠ♥︎

And the gimbap may be mini gimbap, but the pieces are substantial enough to fill you up. They’re good on their own, but dip the gimbap deeply into the tteokbokki sauce and it’s heavenly,, The filling is simple and there isn’t a lot in it, but you know how that can have such a satisfyingly solid flavor, haha.

Then there were the curled fish cakes with their amazing hot broth. The fish cakes weren’t soggy at all, which I loved. But the broth is the real kicker!! They gave us lots of fish cake and broth too—you can feel the owner’s generosity, hehe.

There was plenty of nicely springy sundae, along with liver, lung, and other offal too~~ The sundae is nutty and good on its own; dip it in salt, then dip it into the tteokbokki sauce too, haha. Korean street food always ends with everything being dipped into tteokbokki sauce, right? With every kind of snack spread out in front of us, even just a bite of each filled me up quickly.

Honestly, everything else is just a side. A side! The tteokbokki was seriously... so good that it had been ages since I kept picking up two or three pieces at a time. Can you see how perfectly rich-colored that sauce is? Hyeonseoni-ne’s tteokbokki is truly delicious,,♥︎

Crisp fried snacks that never feel greasy

You can feel the old-school Euljiro vibe just from the plates, right? The batter was crisp, with vegetable fritters, gim-mari (seaweed rolls), fried dumplings, fried squid, and fried sweet potato too~~ The fried snacks weren’t greasy; they were clean-tasting and nutty. This isn’t simply cheap Korean street food. Every plate has a generous portion and a flavor made with care! It was such a satisfying meal for me, haha.

Why is dipping things like this so delicious to me? This place’s sauce is truly magical(?) There must be the owner’s secret recipe in it, but it’s honestly among the best Korean street food I’ve had lately!! Usually, when you eat at pocha-style places, the food can get a little soggy, you know? But not here at all. Everything was springy and tasted freshly made, which made it even better.

You can get rice balls or fried rice cakes through a review event too. Having tried the other dishes, I bet the fried rice cakes would be delicious..! I’m going back to Euljiro soon for instant tteokbokki again!! I need to try every single menu item. Truly, every single thing is delicious.

A Korean snack bar to visit after a Cheonggyecheon walk

When you’re craving delicious Korean street food in an old-school Euljiro atmosphere, let’s go to Hyeonseoni-ne,, From nostalgic flavors to instant tteokbokki bubbling away as you eat it, it’s the kind of food that makes you happy!!! The weather has been getting cooler lately, and I was thinking it’s just perfect for sitting by Cheonggyecheon. Take a little walk along the stream, then stop by. Maybe I’ll be at the next table(?)!
