Weekend family lunch at a Wangsimni gomtang restaurant: Geumnyeong
In short
Geumnyeong Gomtang is a gomtang (beef bone soup) restaurant near Wangsimni Station in Seongdong, Seoul, housed in a converted family home, with the Wangsimni branch as the main location and a second branch in Yeoksam. On a weekend lunch visit, a party of three including a child ordered the regular gomtang and the minari (water dropwort) gomtang, and the soft, fragrant minari cut cleanly through the rich broth while the kimchi stood out on its own. The child called it the best gomtang he had ever eaten, so Geumnyeong Gomtang is now a regular stop.

Here's my review of Geumnyeong Gomtang's main branch in Wangsimni :) This time I visited through Superchart.
Let me start with the conclusion: this is a new regular spot for me! I got a discount as part of the campaign for my first visit, but next time I'm going back and paying full price.
Even my kid tried it and said it was the best gomtang (beef bone soup) they'd ever had 👍 When even the kid eats like that, there's no reason not to come back haha. This Wangsimni location is Geumnyeong Gomtang's main branch, and there's also a Yeoksam branch.

Geumnyeong Gomtang's main branch: a converted house near Wangsimni Station
The main branch is a converted house, which gives it a stylish feel. It's really close to Wangsimni Station, isn't it?
It's tucked in an alley, so it has that "wait, there's a place here??" feeling, but it turns out it's actually pretty accessible :)
We went as a family of three, including our kid, for weekend lunch. Looking around the restaurant, I noticed some people eating alone too.
Gomtang itself is a menu item that's easy to enjoy solo, and the atmosphere is relaxed, so it seemed like a good spot for anyone looking for somewhere to eat alone near Wangsimni. It was also great for a family meal with a kid. And the owner was really kind. :)

When we walked in, the lunch rush had just cleared out haha, so we waited a bit while they cleaned up.

There was a staircase leading up to the second floor, so I peeked up there — turns out there's a clean dining hall upstairs too!
Geumnyeong Gomtang's menu, and why we ordered regular and minari gomtang

Check the photo for the menu :) We ordered the regular gomtang and minari gomtang this time.
Looking at the menu, the minari gomtang caught my eye — honestly, it was my first time ever trying a gomtang with minari (water dropwort) in it. Minari in gomtang? I was curious whether it would actually work, but in the end it turned out to be the most memorable dish of the day. Next time I'm getting the minari rice noodle soup!
How deep and clean the regular gomtang broth tasted

First, the regular gomtang. One spoonful in and I thought, oh, this place is good.
Compared to other places I've tried, it felt similar in style to the well-known Ido Gomtang, but Geumnyeong's version felt clean while having even more depth in the broth. "Light" doesn't mean bland here — you fully taste the rich flavor drawn out from the meat, without it ever feeling heavy or greasy.
The broth itself was so good my spoon kept going back for more 🥄 Mixing the hot broth with rice and eating it with the meat made for a properly filling meal. It felt like all my fatigue melted away! It's the kind of taste you'll crave when you want something clean and comforting.
My first minari gomtang: how soft was the minari?

And then, the minari gomtang, which was even better than expected! This was my first time trying minari gomtang, and wow, minari really does go well with gomtang haha.
Adding minari to the deep, savory broth of the regular gomtang brought in its distinct fragrance and a refreshing brightness that paired really well. Personally, I'd describe it as adding a kind of "tanginess" from the minari. After a spoonful of the rich broth, eating minari alongside it cleanses your palate, so you can keep eating without it feeling heavy.
And above all, I loved how soft the minari was. Sometimes minari is so tough it's uncomfortable to chew, but here it was soft and easy to eat, no toughness at all.
The kimchi at Geumnyeong Gomtang is worth the trip
The main dishes are delicious, but the kimchi is really something too ㅠㅠ This place is a kimchi destination...!

Taking a piece of meat with some minari together gives you the savoriness of the meat and the fragrance of the minari at once — so good. Add a piece of kimchi on top and it all comes together with a refreshing finish. If you like minari, I'd say the regular gomtang is great, but definitely try the minari gomtang too.
Next visit: the minari rice noodle soup
Looking at the menu, I noticed they also have minari rice noodle soup (minari kalguksu-style pho). After enjoying the minari gomtang so much, I got really curious about that one too.
Minari and gomtang broth go together so well — I wonder what it'll taste like paired with rice noodles! My next visit's menu is already decided: minari rice noodle soup haha. I'm definitely going back for that :) I also saw a table ordering boiled pork (mulsuyuk), which made me curious too. Guess I'll have to go a few more times haha.
The bowl my child called the best gomtang he has eaten
We went with our kid, and they ate really well. Gomtang isn't spicy or overly seasoned, so it's a great choice when eating out with kids.
But this wasn't just "eating well" — my kid tried it and said it was the best gomtang they'd ever had haha. A full pass from a kid's palate too 👍
When you eat out with kids, even if the adults love the food, you sometimes hesitate to go back if there's nothing the kid can eat. Here, all three of us could enjoy the meal together, which made me like it even more. This place also seems great for anyone looking for a hearty Korean lunch in Wangsimni with a kid in tow. Since a lot of kids don't like green onions, it might be worth asking for half the usual amount in advance.
Good for solo lunch and family meals alike

Families with kids like us can dine comfortably here, and there were also people eating alone, so it seemed like a good spot for solo dining too. A single bowl of gomtang is filling enough that you don't have to agonize over the menu, making it a solid lunch option for office workers nearby as well. Whether you come alone or with a kid, the atmosphere felt easy and welcoming for a meal!
Found through a sponsored visit, now a regular spot
This was my first visit to Geumnyeong Gomtang, through Superchart! When you try a new restaurant just for a campaign discount, sometimes it ends up being a one-time thing — but with Geumnyeong Gomtang, I was already thinking "let's come back here" on my way out the door.
The clean yet deep gomtang broth was delicious, and especially the minari gomtang, which I tried for the first time, was totally my type. Adding fragrant, soft minari turned the rich gomtang into a dish with a whole different kind of appeal.
My kid ate so well they called it the best gomtang they'd ever had, the owner was kind, and the relaxed atmosphere worked for everything from solo dining to family meals with a kid — I loved all of it. This is a regular spot for me now 😋 Next time I'm going back for the minari rice noodle soup I've already got my eye on. If you're in Wangsimni looking for a warm, filling gomtang or a clean Korean meal, check out Geumnyeong Gomtang's main branch. :)
