Uijeongbu Jeil Market fried chicken: spicy garlic-chili at Dalgom's

My husband and I are both chicken lovers, so late-night snacks usually mean fried chicken or dakgangjeong (Korean sweet-crispy fried chicken) for us! This time we heard about a real hit spot for dakgangjeong in Uijeongbu, so we went to check it out. Here's my review of Dalgom's, a dakgangjeong shop in Uijeongbu that makes everything fresh daily and often sells out by evening.

Dalgom's sits inside Uijeongbu Jeil Market! I assumed parking would be tough at a market, but there's a public parking lot right inside, so it was super convenient. From the parking lot, the shop is just a 1-minute walk.

Dalgom's dakgangjeong prices and accepted payment methods

They sell half chicken for 9,000 won, whole chicken for 17,000 won, and 1.5 chicken for 24,000 won, so it works well whether you're buying for yourself or the whole family!

They're also on multiple delivery apps like Baedal Teukgeup and Ttangyo. And you can pay with Onnuri gift certificates, Digital Onnuri, Zero Pay, Kakao Pay, or the Gyeonggi Love Card — all of which make the actual price even cheaper.

There were plenty of chairs for waiting inside, so I could sit comfortably while my order was cooked. It was the first time I'd seen even the waiting chairs kept so spotless — the whole shop and kitchen area were immaculate, which made me trust the food even more ✨

Which three flavors to pick in the 24,000-won 1.5-chicken set

I went with the three-flavor 1.5-chicken set (24,000 won). There were so many flavor options to choose from!

• Fried (plain)

They all looked delicious, so after a lot of deliberation we settled on Sweet, Garlic-Chili, and Bburinkle. True to a dakgangjeong hotspot, they cook to order, so we waited about 5 minutes.

While waiting, I looked around the shop, and the cooking area was reeeally clean. Not even my own kitchen is this spotless — no dust anywhere, everything shining. You could just tell how hygienically the dakgangjeong was being made!!! And they had a wide variety of drinks, not just sodas but regular beverages too, so there was something for everyone.

And then!!!!!!! Right after us, the next customer got told they'd sold out and had to stop selling for the day. Honestly, this was the first time I'd ever seen a dakgangjeong shop sell out like that, and it confirmed for me that this really is a local favorite in Uijeongbu. I got even more curious how good it must taste for so many customers to keep coming.

Here's the freshly made, still-warm dakgangjeong. The owner clearly had a lot of pride in the plain fried chicken, but seeing that we couldn't give up the other three flavors, they kindly swapped part of the Bburinkle portion for plain fried chicken. Even though it must have been extra hassle, they explained all the flavors to us and made the switch — I was really touched,,,,

On the careful drive home, I barely resisted the urge to just eat it in the car,,, and once we got home, the food still looked just as appetizing — golden and glossy — which confirmed we'd found a true dakgangjeong hotspot.

Tasting all four Dalgom's flavors one by one

In order: Sweet, Garlic-Chili, Bburinkle, and plain Fried. The Sweet and Garlic-Chili looked pretty similar visually. But the taste was totally different!!!haha

Plain Fried: the crispiest of the four

First off, the plain fried chicken was crispy and nutty enough to justify the owner's pride. With unseasoned fried chicken like this, the oil quality really matters, and there wasn't a hint of oily smell — clearly kept clean. It was perfect as a drinking snack.

Bburinkle: the powdered, seasoned option

The Bburinkle, which my partner had been looking forward to, was properly sweet with plenty of seasoning powder, giving it a bold flavor that we both really enjoyed.

Sweet and Garlic-Chili: how spicy is the garlic-chili?

The Sweet flavor was the classic dakgangjeong taste we all know, but the Garlic-Chili was spicier than I expected! I usually love spicy food, so I ate it happily, but my spice-wimp partner started gasping and quickly went back to the Bburinkle 🤭 If you like spicy food, you have to try the Garlic-Chili flavor haha.

They also threw in some shrimp chips, which paired perfectly since we happened to be drinking beer at the time. From the food to the packaging, you could really feel the owner's care and attention throughout.
