Wood-fired mackerel with moms' group in Suwon: Godeungeo Myeongpumi

In short

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish restaurant in Tapdong, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. Ordering two servings of grilled mackerel and one of grilled Spanish mackerel with fellow moms, the writer found golden, moist wood-fired fish and a self-serve side dish bar with chamnamul (aster) salad, mukmuchim, japchae, and seaweed soup. With no fishy smell and a large private parking lot, it's a good pick for family meals or gatherings of many.

Grilling fish at home is a hassle — the smell, the oil splatter — so these days if I want grilled fish I'd rather just eat out. This time I went to Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda (고등어명품이되다) Suwon Branch with a few of my kid's friends' moms.

The name itself basically brags about how good the mackerel is — and after eating there, I got it.

Location, hours, and parking

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is located in Tapdong, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon.

It's open daily from 10:40 to 22:00 with no break time. There's a big private parking lot right in front, so it was easy to visit by car.

What was the vibe inside?

Bright, spacious dining hall interior
Restaurant tables with generous spacing
Neatly arranged restaurant seating area

Once inside, the place was way bigger than I expected. It's bright and clean overall, a pleasant spot for a meal. The tables have decent spacing too, so it seemed fine for family dinners or bigger groups.

Spacious waiting area
Coffee corner for waiting guests

There's also a spacious waiting area with coffee available while you wait, which was a nice touch.

Wood-fired mackerel and Spanish mackerel

Two servings of grilled mackerel and one of grilled Spanish mackerel served together

We ordered two servings of grilled mackerel and one of grilled Spanish mackerel. Both were good, but I'd definitely recommend the mackerel.

Mackerel, when grilled poorly, can taste more fishy than rich — but here there was almost none of that.

The outside was grilled golden brown while the inside stayed moist,

so mackerel's signature savory flavor really came through.

Squeezing a bit of the lemon that came with it over the fish made it fresher, and dipping it in soy sauce mixed with wasabi was great too.

Next to the spoons there was soy sauce, wasabi, and disposable sauce cups, so you could mix as much as you wanted.

There's definitely a distinct flavor to wood-fired fish compared to fish grilled in a regular pan or grill.

Side dishes as good as the fish

A full table spread with various side dishes

The grilled fish here is great, but honestly the side dishes were sooo good.

Cucumber salad, doraji salad, and other side dishes

From japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) to mul kimchi (water kimchi), cucumber salad, doraji (balloon flower root) salad, and various namul (seasoned greens) — there's a whole spread, and I was already reaching for rice before the main dish even arrived. Every single side was a rice-thief.

The chamnamul (aster) salad was especially good — tangy, with that fragrant herbal aroma that paired well with the grilled fish. The mukmuchim (acorn jelly salad) topped with gim (seaweed) flakes was also surprisingly good — the jelly and seaweed combo kept me coming back for more.

My favorite, japchae, was delicious too, and the refreshing mul kimchi was great for resetting my palate between bites of grilled fish.

The small basic serving of spicy jeyuk bokkeum (stir-fried pork) was also a nice bite to have between fish.

Rich seaweed soup with mixed-grain rice

The seaweed soup wasn't just a token side soup either — the broth had real depth. The rice wasn't plain white rice but had a bit of mixed grains, so with all the sides together it felt like a proper full Korean meal.

Any side dish running low could be refilled freely from the self-serve bar, so you could load up on whatever you liked most.

The self-serve bar also had sikhye (sweet rice drink), perfect for a clean finish after the meal. Not too sweet and really tasty :)

A great Suwon grilled fish spot for family meals

With easy parking, a spacious restaurant, and clean, well-prepared food, this seems like a solid choice for taking your parents out or finding a family dinner spot. I went with a group of my kid's friends' moms this time, and it was a comfortable place to chat and eat together.

What I liked most was being able to enjoy moist, savory wood-fired mackerel cleanly and deliciously — something that's hard to make at home since grilling fish yourself is such a pain. If I go back, I'll order the grilled mackerel again without a second thought.
