I'd been looking for a good restaurant in Gwacheon to bring my parents to, and that's how I ended up at Haenon Miyeok. At first I thought, "the seaweed soup is a bit pricey, isn't it?" but after eating I got why they call it premium seaweed soup. It's tucked away in a quiet part of Gwacheon, so it's relaxed for a leisurely meal, and parking is free — perfect for a family gathering or a meal with parents.

Since I live in Gwacheon I walked over as a bit of a stroll, and that evening the sunset was unusually beautiful! Heading out for a good dinner while the sky looked like that put me in a great mood ❤

Haenon is a seaweed soup set meal specialist that came up from Busan, simmering each bowl fresh, rich and full of care the moment it's ordered — as someone who already loves seaweed soup, I was excited for dinner. The weather had also turned chilly, so it felt just right for warming the whole family up.

What surprised me the moment I walked in was the interior! It didn't feel like a regular restaurant at all — clean and upscale, like stepping into a gallery. The male manager was so kind it felt like being at a hotel restaurant, and all the staff were attentive, which kept me in a good mood the whole meal.

What's on the self-serve banchan bar at Haenon Miyeok

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch has a separate self-serve bar, so if the banchan in the initial set meal isn't enough, you can casually go get more. For banchan that pair with seaweed soup, there was rich napa kimchi and young radish kimchi, plus seasoned scallops — that combo with the warm seaweed soup was my favorite!

The japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), loaded with vegetables and made with real care, was delicious, and that eggplant sweet-and-sour dish was warm and crispy too.

Besides beef seaweed soup, there were many types with rich seafood added!

Since it was evening, there were people having a drink with their meal and even a team having a work dinner — the carefully stir-fried beef bulgogi and jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) they had looked really tasty.

I liked that the country-of-origin information was posted clearly and in detail! Since a lot of people bring their parents here, it's good to have that to check.

Review event and what to know before ordering

There's a review event offering a drink or crispy kimchi pancake, which would've paired perfectly with the seaweed soup set — but since I was there with my niece and busy tending to the baby, I totally forgot to do it haha. I'd recommend everyone leave a review to get that tasty kimchi pancake combo!

There was also a seaweed-shaped pop notice about precautions, which was so cute haha. The stone pots are cooked over direct flame so they're very hot — be careful — and perilla powder is used for that nutty flavor, but they said if you have allergies, just tell them in advance and they'll leave it out!

Not just soup: the full Korean set meal at Haenon Miyeok

The initial banchan setting! Seasoned flounder was included too, which paired well with the seaweed soup. Such a clean setup — parents would love this combo! One reason I liked Haenon Miyeok was that it's not just seaweed soup — a properly set, tidy table comes with it. You can also use the salad bar, and the banchan all came out neat and well arranged.

Dining with a 7-month-old: baby chair and free abalone

The day we visited, there were a lot of families with kids — baby chairs were ready, and since the seasoning is mild, the kids seemed to be eating happily! Pregnant guests and birthday guests get one abalone added, too — seaweed is good for pregnant women, and it's the soup you always eat on birthdays, so getting extra service on top of that would make anyone happy!

We went with my 7-month-old niece, and having a baby chair ready made it easy to visit with her. If you're looking for a family-friendly restaurant in Gwacheon to bring your parents to, this is exactly why I'd recommend it!

Flounder vs beef vs Tongyeong oyster seaweed soup

We ordered three: flounder seaweed soup, beef seaweed soup, and Tongyeong oyster seaweed soup.

First, the beef seaweed soup was, as expected of the classic, rich and deep in flavor. The moment you take the first spoonful, your whole body warms up! Perfect comfort food.

Personally, my top pick of the day was the flounder seaweed soup! It was actually the one I was most curious about, and it exceeded expectations. The broth was incredibly savory and the flounder flesh was so soft that my spoon kept going back for more. I'd order it again next time.

The Tongyeong oyster seaweed soup wasn't in peak oyster season, but the oysters were genuinely plump and hearty. The more you chew, the more the ocean flavor comes through — anyone who loves oysters would be satisfied for sure.

Tot seaweed rice, with free refills

The rice was especially good — fluffy rice with tot (toasted seaweed) mixed in went so well with the seaweed soup. Plus refills were free, so you could eat a hearty meal.

While eating, I noticed the next table over was a work dinner group — a bit surprising to have a work dinner at a seaweed soup restaurant. But thinking about it, they do have sides like jeyuk bokkeum and bulgogi, so it makes sense as a place for a casual drink with your meal too.

Portions big enough to take the rest home

Above all, the seaweed soup portions were really generous, which I loved. If you don't finish it, you can take it home, and I saw people packing extra to bring to their parents — I'd recommend this as a great Gwacheon spot for takeout too.

On a day when you're craving hot broth and want a properly set, healthy table, this place delivers :) Parking is easy, and there's also a famous Hans Cake café nearby, so it's genuinely great for a family outing!

Personally, I think if someone treated me to a meal here when I was feeling sick... or on my birthday..., they'd be an incredibly thoughtful person... so touched, honestly, japchae and all haha haha.
