Gwacheon seaweed soup restaurant on a weekend drive: Haenon Miyeok

In short

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant serving seaweed soup set meals on Araetbaengi-ro in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. On a weekend drive, we ordered the beef seaweed soup set and the scallop seaweed soup set, and the soup portions were so generous that we bought a 1,000 won takeout container and carried the leftovers home. With a high-ceilinged, spacious hall, baby chairs and large tables, Haenon Miyeok suits family gatherings with young children.

Why we chose Haenon Miyeok in Gwacheon at the end of a weekend drive

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is at 67 Araetbaengi-ro, 1st floor, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, and its signature dish is beef seaweed soup (miyeokguk). Parking is available too. We were out for a weekend drive after a while and wondering where to eat something good, so we stopped by Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch in Gwacheon.

Apparently all Haenon Miyeok locations are directly operated branches, and the Gwacheon branch had a big empty lot out front for parking.

They also give free abalone to pregnant guests or birthday guests, so it seemed like a good spot to come for special occasions too.

Inside Haenon Miyeok: a wide hall, baby chairs and a refill corner

High-ceilinged, spacious interior of Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch

The inside of Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch was very spacious with high ceilings, giving an open feeling. Right as we walked in, we could see the food refill station.

Hall seating with large tables

Overall it was really clean, the tables were on the larger side, and there were baby chairs too, so we saw a lot of families. Tables were also lined up together, which looked convenient for groups of multiple families dining together — and there really were a lot of large groups.

On one side they were also selling savory nutritious snacks.

I honestly thought this would be a place mostly filled with families bringing elderly parents, but I was surprised to see so many people here with young kids!

What we ordered: the beef and scallop seaweed soup sets

Two generous seaweed soup set meals with side dishes

We ordered the beef seaweed soup set and the scallop seaweed soup set, and the banchan (side dishes) came out generously. Above all, the amount of seaweed soup was really, really a lot.

A bowl of long-simmered beef seaweed soup

I ordered the beef seaweed soup, and it really tasted long-simmered. Just from the color of the broth you could tell it was different, and it had a lot of beef in it too.

My husband ordered the scallop seaweed soup set, and it had so many scallops in it that it felt like he ate a lifetime's worth of shellfish. After comparing the two, he said the beef seaweed soup felt a bit cleaner in flavor.

The banchan: grilled flounder, fried eggplant and seasoned chicken breast

The grilled flounder side dish was also really good. It had that crisply grilled feel! The seasoning was done really well, so we ate it happily.

The default banchan were all delicious too, and especially the fried eggplant in the middle, served with some kind of sauce, was really good. We could have gotten a refill but we were too full to manage it.

I thought the one on the left was baek-kimchi (white kimchi), but it turned out to be shredded chicken breast in a dressing! It was tangy and delicious, and I wanted to ask how it was made. The japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) had that familiar, delicious taste we all know!

Packing the leftover seaweed soup to eat again at dinner

Even though we really tried our best to finish it, the seaweed soup portion was so big we had leftovers. We bought a takeout container, brought it home, and ate it again for dinner that evening — and haha, even the leftovers were a huge amount. We had such a satisfying, delicious meal at Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch. I'd recommend it to anyone planning a family gathering or looking for a place to eat together with kids.
