Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a pie specialty shop tucked inside Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, and there's no parking at the shop itself. I got a sudden urge to go to Gyeongju while in Miryang and just drove straight there. Luckily there are plenty of public parking lots around Hwangnidan-gil, so parking was easy!

Hwangnidan-gil, which keeps its old-town look intact, feels comfortable and nice no matter when you visit! One reason so many tourists come to Hwangnidan-gil seems to be all the delicious desserts, snacks, and gift sets people pick up as travel souvenirs^^

First impression: apple boxes stacked outside the shop

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie catches your eye first with the boxes of Cheongdo Busa apples stacked outside the shop. Since I was already in Gyeongju, I wanted to buy a variety of desserts to give my mother as a gift. Passing through Hwangnidan-gil, the place that caught my eye was Gyeongju Tokyo Pie, with that fragrant apple smell hitting my nose!

With all those apple boxes piled up front, I was curious what kind of delicious desserts they sold, and it turned out to be a stylish shop selling crispy pies filled with apple, red bean paste, and chocolate.

The exterior has such a Japanese feel that I forgot I was in Korea — it felt like I'd wandered into some alley in Tokyo instead of Gyeongju!

When the pies come out: 11:30 and 2:30

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie has set times when the pies come out, so if you time your visit right you get a fresh, warm pie. Since there are fixed bake times, it's worth checking ahead so you can enjoy a just-baked, warm pie even more!

It's baked and sold same-day, with an early sellout system, which made me trust the shop even more and enjoy the pies with peace of mind!

After I ordered and waited, they wrapped the freshly baked pies beautifully! Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a dessert where Gyeongju's deep history meets the image of the city of Tokyo, all in one treat — from the name to the taste... I thought it made for one more special memory of Gyeongju^^

It looks very Japanese, but the filling uses Cheongdo Busa apples, keeping a genuinely Korean flavor — let's take a closer look at Gyeongju Tokyo Pie!

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie's signature item is the Apple Tokyo Pie, made with a whole apple inside. There are three kinds of pies at the shop, and this apple pie is the most famous.

The pie itself has a very crumbly texture, with plenty of butter, so the pastry layers are fully alive in bread form. On top of that, a whole apple is packed in, so you get the full texture and flavor of the raw apple in Gyeongju Tokyo Pie's apple pie!

Apparently the apples aren't used right away — they go through an aging process before becoming an ingredient, which seems to give a deeper, richer apple flavor.

Red Bean Tokyo Pie 🫘 — sweet red bean paste that suits older parents

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie's Red Bean Tokyo Pie is packed full of domestic red beans, making it a good gift for elders. The second pie at Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is this Red Bean Tokyo Pie, generously filled with domestic red beans.

Just like the cute 'angkko (red bean filling)' lettering suggests, it looks packed full of red bean paste inside! When I split the Red Bean Tokyo Pie with both hands, even the sound was a work of art. The pastry breaking apart along its layers was so delicious I ended up picking up every last crumb, haha 🤣

The red bean filling is truly packed to the brim, so I think this is one of the best Hwangnidan-gil desserts in Gyeongju to gift to elders — you're guaranteed praise!

Chocolate Tokyo Pie 🍫 — the flavor the kids liked best

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie's Chocolate Tokyo Pie has chocolate filling inside and was the pie the kids liked best. The last one, the chocolate pie, is the kids' favorite, filled with chocolate, and they raved about how delicious it was.

Personally, I also really enjoyed the chocolate pie. All three pies have their own distinct charm, so buying a mix of all three means everyone can find something they love at Gyeongju Tokyo Pie!

What my mother in Busan said, and which pies to give as a gift

When I gave my mother in Busan all three Gyeongju Tokyo Pie flavors as a gift, she said she'd never had such a luxurious bread before. Above all, the two owners running Gyeongju Tokyo Pie on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju were so kind and do a lot of good, so personally, I hope anyone looking for Gyeongju desserts will seek out Gyeongju Tokyo Pie^^

The taste of Tokyo I found in Gyeongju today was these three: the apple pie, red bean pie, and chocolate pie from Gyeongju Tokyo Pie. When I brought them to Busan for my mother to try, she said they were so delicious and that she'd never had such a luxurious bread before! That's how well it holds up as a gift — a dessert gift set discovered at a Hwangnidan-gil restaurant on a Gyeongju trip that's more than worthy. If you want to give friends or family a Gyeongju dessert that's a bit different from the usual, I really recommend Gyeongju Tokyo Pie.
