Gyeongju fruit mochi shop I lined up for alone: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a takeout-only fruit mochi shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. After sending a wait-hating husband and kids back to the car, the writer queued alone for three flavors — mango, peach and gold kiwi — and unwrapped the hanji (traditional Korean paper) to find whole fruit and yogurt cream inside. Of the three, the peach mochi made with yellow peach was the sweetest and the clear favorite.

Why I stopped at Tareudang on Hwangnidang-gil
Since I was already out exploring the trendy Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, I came to Tareudang to try the fruit mochi that's been blowing up on social media lately! Honestly I wanted fruit mochi so badly I tried making it at home once, but it just didn't come out tasting like the real thing, ugh. Once again I realized that for popular desserts, buying them is just better for your peace of mind!

If you spot a big banner up ahead, that's Tareudang, the famous fruit mochi dessert spot on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju! And here's a surprising fact — this place has a must-wait line, so don't get intimidated by the length. Just get in line fast.

How long is the wait at Tareudang? Sales at 11:30 and 16:00
Tareudang's first sale starts at 11:30 and the second at 16:00, so I lined up accordingly. It was a bright, clear autumn day again, but Tareudang's popularity is still stuck in the middle of summer...

As I got closer and closer to the inside of the shop, I suddenly got so excited! My husband hates waiting in line, so I've never actually gotten to try dessert spots with long waits before — but today I sent him and the kids off to wait in the car, and I stood in line by myself, and I was surprisingly calm about it...
When it was finally my turn, I got a good look at Tareudang up close — it had a unique orange-toned vibe, cute and lovely in a cozy little space! It's takeout only, so you order, pay, and get your items right away.

Tareudang's mochi flavors and the three I picked
The mochi flavors were dried persimmon, peach, mango, fig, pineapple, gold kiwi, and raw chocolate! I ordered mango, peach, and gold kiwi.

I remember a famous fruit mochi shop in Seoul wrapping its mochi in colorful hanji (traditional Korean paper) like this, and Tareudang's fruit mochi is also wrapped so prettily that the photos come out really crisp! Now let's actually taste the fruit mochi from Tareudang, this Hwangnidang-gil favorite ^^
Mango mochi 🥭 — a whole fresh mango, seriously juicy
I opened the most expensive item at Tareudang first, the mango mochi, since I was so curious.

The mango mochi was wrapped in orange hanji, and once I unwrapped that there was another layer of plastic underneath! A bit of the mango was peeking out, which made it even cuter 🥭

I tried to cut it vertically for a photo but messed it up, so I ended up cutting it horizontally instead — my husband said it tastes the same either way, and honestly, fair point 🤣 The moment I cut the mango mochi, the kids' hands were the fastest ㅋㅋㅋ It disappeared in no time.
The chewy rice cake skin was coated with sponge cake crumbs too, which made it even sweeter, and inside was yogurt cream and whole mango — one bite in and you could really feel the mango flesh and juice. A flavor that everyone, young and old, loves — that's the mango mochi.
Peach mochi 🍑 — my top pick, sweetest thanks to yellow peach
Personally the hanji color was one of my favorites, so I was even more excited for the peach mochi.

As soon as I unwrapped the hanji, the peach mochi appeared, and I somehow just knew right away this would be the best one!

Inside was white peach, the juiciest kind of peach, wrapped in the rice cake skin — the sweetness level was really high, and personally I thought the peach beat out the mango!

The sweetness of the rice cake skin and yogurt cream met the fresh whole peach's tartness in a really delicious combination! I think this is the flavor people are waiting in line for.
Gold kiwi mochi 🥝 — a well-ripened whole kiwi in cross-section
The last fruit mochi from Tareudang was the gold kiwi mochi, made with one of the sweetest kiwi varieties.

Even the hanji wrapping color resembled the gold kiwi itself! Every time I open one of these wrappers, my heart races wondering what the flavor will be like this time.

A whole gold kiwi was tucked inside, so cutting it with a knife revealed a gorgeous cross-section! The gold kiwi was perfectly ripened, so it was incredibly sweet and delicious.
Where Tareudang ranks on a Hwangnidang-gil dessert crawl
I've been buying and trying dessert shops one by one on Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil, and Tareudang in particular seemed to be the one drawing the biggest crowds! It really shows just how sky-high fruit mochi's popularity is right now — it even made me vaguely think I'd like to open a fruit mochi shop myself!
I love dessert in general and tend to seek out good dessert shops wherever I go, and the spots on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju are all clustered together, so they're easy to find, with plenty to see and enjoy along the way. If you're visiting Gyeongju, Hwangnidang-gil is a must-stop, and picking up some delicious dessert there as a gift for friends would be lovely too.
