Crispy mushroom plate at a Jeonpo-dong Korean restaurant: Hyangtaek

In short

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is a Korean rice-dish restaurant in Jeonpo-dong, Busan, serving samchi gondre bap (mackerel with thistle rice) and an eggplant doenjang rice bowl. Arriving just before the 3:30 PM break time, the writer ordered samchi gondre bap for 14,000 won, the eggplant doenjang rice bowl for 13,000 won and a mushroom plate for 6,000 won, and the mackerel was boneless so it could be mixed into the rice right away. The mushroom plate at Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch came out crisp and chewy, worth a return trip on its own.

Out for a stroll in Jeonpo, wondering what to eat, and decided on Korean food since it's always easy on the stomach.

Everything came out really clean and neat at Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch.

Inside Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch just before the 3:30 PM break time

The inside of Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is clean and spacious too. I took the interior photo on my way out after eating, but before that every table was completely packed, and now it's close to break time so it's empty — but seeing it busy at first made me proud I'd found a good spot!!!!

What we ordered at Hyangtaek, the prices and the side dishes

We ordered mackerel gondre rice for ₩14,000, eggplant doenjang rice bowl for ₩13,000, and a mushroom plate for ₩6,000.

The basic side dishes were gim (seaweed), doenjang soup, mixed salted seafood, and more. If the side dishes run low, they'll bring more if you ask!!!

This one was meant to be added to the eggplant bowl — kelp water, I think that's what it was..?

The doenjang soup was good too, and the side dishes paired well with the rice bowls!!!!

It's here!!!! Really as neat and clean as I'd heard ~

Eggplant doenjang rice bowl, 13,000 won

This is the eggplant bowl Deun-i ordered. She's a yukhoe (raw beef) lover so I expected her to order yukhoe bibimbap, but she said yukhoe bibimbap you can get anywhere, while this is the restaurant's best menu item, so she wanted to try it!!!!!

The eggplant was so big I thought we'd need scissors, but it splits apart easily with just a spoon, so soft. Truly delicious haha

A plate of mushrooms priced at ₩6,000

Mushroom plate, 6,000 won

The mushroom plate — this is seriously so good hahahaha!!!! Really crispy and chewy, exactly my style. Fellow mushroom lovers, I'm asking for the recipe x100000.

Genuinely delicious!!!!!!! So good!!!!!!!!

This is the mackerel gondre rice bowl I ordered.

Gondre rice topped with a large piece of mackerel

The mackerel is a good size and completely bone-free, so you can mix it right in and eat straight away!!!!!

Mixed and ready.

It has this really clean, healthy taste, if that makes sense? It's tasty wrapped in gim, the portion is generous, and it's delicious eaten plain too — just a genuinely great dish!!!! Felt like I filled up on something healthy and satisfying, so happy hahaha

Is Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch worth going back to?

It was genuinely delicious. A clean, tidy restaurant that's good for lunch and equally good for dinner!!! The mushroom plate was truly amazing, so crispy hahaha, a flavor you can't get anywhere else ~~~!

Coming on a weekday means you can get this through the review event, so tempting!!! I need to visit on a weekday sometime. I'm really curious about the other menu items too — the yukhoe bibimbap, the mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) — the menu isn't huge, but it's the kind of place where I want to try every single dish ~ Definitely coming back next time I'm out in Jeonpo :-)
