Hangover lunch at a Jeonpo-dong Korean restaurant: Hyangtaek Jeonpo

In short

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is a tidy Korean restaurant on Seojeon-ro in Busanjin, Busan. After drinks the night before, the writer and her boyfriend came for a hangover lunch and ordered samchi gondeure-bap (mackerel with thistle rice) and yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl), emptying their bowls with a refill of gopchang gim (crispy seasoned laver) plus cold barley tea, side dishes and soup. For a day when you want gentle, non-spicy Korean food to settle your stomach, Hyangtaek is a solid pick.

Why we picked Hyangtaek for a hangover lunch in Jeonpo-dong

I was hunting for a good Jeonpo lunch spot when I found Hyangtaek! I'd had a drink the night before and was craving something hearty and Korean to soothe my stomach, and the menu was exactly my style — clean, comforting Korean food. It looked like the kind of place for a proper, tidy meal, so I went with my boyfriend to check it out.

Cold barley tea served on the table at Hyangtaek

Hyangtaek starts you off with cold barley tea..! You all know a place with good water is really a good restaurant, right? Instead of plain water, they had cold barley tea ready, which was great for waking up my appetite — a sip before the meal already made my stomach feel more settled.

What's on the menu at Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch

The side menu was just as solid as the mains! Everything from chicken bulgogi to grilled deodeok (bellflower root) and mushrooms looked delicious. There was even a summer-only pollock yukhoe cold noodle soup, perfect for enjoying a seasonal dish. Being a proper Korean restaurant, it had filling rice-bowl mains plus plenty of side dishes to choose from depending on your taste.

The interior was cozy and warm overall — I loved it! It felt clean but relaxed, exactly right for a lunchtime visit.

Cute tissue box on the table

The tissue box on the table was so cute and pretty that I actually wanted one for myself. It felt like even small details like that were chosen to match the restaurant's vibe, which made me like the place even more.

Warm soup and side dishes

Neatly arranged side dishes and a warm soup came out. Even before the mains arrived, my expectations were already rising!!

Mackerel thistle rice and yukhoe bibimbap at Hyangtaek

  • Mackerel thistle rice (samchi gondeure-bap)
  • Yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef mixed rice)

The dishes I'd ordered finally arrived. Even at a glance, the presentation was insane..! Just looking at it made my mouth water. The colors were so pretty and appetizing that I couldn't stop taking photos.

With an egg yolk plopped right on top, the yukhoe bibimbap looked absolutely perfect — the savory yolk, fresh-looking raw beef, and all the other ingredients coming together made me want to mix it up and dig in immediately.

My boyfriend was busy carefully picking apart the mackerel meat and mixing it in! The mackerel thistle rice was clean-tasting but still had the herb's distinct fragrant flavor, plus the savory taste of the mackerel made it a really filling dish. It wasn't spicy or heavy but kept me reaching back for more — I'd especially recommend it to anyone who loves Korean food.

A bowl of mixed mackerel thistle rice

I like adding a little sugar when I eat bibimbap, so I asked if that was possible, and they brought it right over without hesitation!

Are gopchang gim refills free at Hyangtaek?

We also tried the gonchang gim (crispy seasoned laver) on the side, and it was a real standout! Wrapping the mackerel thistle rice in the laver added a savory depth that paired really well. We enjoyed it so much that we finished the whole batch and ended up asking for a refill! It went so well with the mackerel thistle rice that I kept reaching for more.

Fresh yukhoe wrapped in laver

The yukhoe in the bibimbap was so fresh it was delicious! I also tried wrapping some of the salted seafood side dish in the laver, and that combo was a hidden gem too, so I kept going back for more. A good meal really needs its side dishes done right too — being able to enjoy even the gim so much made the meal that much more satisfying.

An empty bowl at Hyangtaek, cleaned to the last bite

My boyfriend and I enjoyed it so much that before we knew it, we'd scraped our bowls completely clean! We had a proper, filling, delicious Korean meal at Hyangtaek — if you're looking for a great lunch or a solid restaurant in Jeonpo-dong, definitely give Hyangtaek a try!
