Garak Market sashimi dine-in with extra tuna: Yeongjae Susan

In short

Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi shop on the 1st floor of the sales building at Garak Mall, next to Garak Market Station in Songpa, Seoul. The writer ordered the small min-nong-gwang-cham-hoe (a sashimi platter of croaker, sea bass, flounder and sea bream) with in-season fall croaker and sea bass, added 20,000 won worth of tuna sashimi, and ate it at a linked market restaurant for a table charge of 10,000 won per person including spicy fish stew; the request for thicker slices was honoured exactly. Comparing the textures of four white fish was the highlight at Yeongjae Susan, and the fish stew broth was finished to the last drop.

With the weather turning nice and cool lately, I really wanted some seasonal sashimi, so I headed to Gaklak Mall at Garak Market Station!! My office and home are both near Garak Market, so whenever I'm craving sashimi, I just buy it there and eat.

Every time I go to Garak Market I agonize over which fish restaurant to pick, and this time I went to Yeongjae Susan, a well-known fish restaurant at Garak Market.

Where is Yeongjae Susan and how do you get there?

Yeongjae Susan is at unit C-10, 1st floor of Gaklak Mall's sales building. I drove there and parked in the underground parking lot of the Gaklak Mall seafood market, then came up to the 1st floor to Yeongjae Susan.

It's easy to reach by public transit or car. By subway, take the connecting passage near exits 1 or 2 of Garak Market Station, which leads straight into the seafood market building; if you're parking, just take the nearest elevator up to the 1st floor.

Yeongjae Susan's fish tanks and what it sells

When I visited Yeongjae Susan, the tanks were kept spotlessly clean. Tank condition is the thing I care about most when checking out a seafood market spot — somehow if the tanks are basically clean, I feel like everything else will be clean too.

Besides seasonal fish, they had a wide range of stuff — king crab, snow crab, freshwater eel, conger eel, abalone, whelk, scallops, gizzard shad, shrimp, and more. The shrimp looked super fresh too, and I almost ordered it, but decided to save it for a proper shrimp-only visit next time!

The owner was really friendly and explained which fish were good right now. Since it was fall, I went with the assorted sashimi platter featuring croaker and sea bass, and they said they'd get it ready right away.

We ordered the small size of mingnonggwangcham-hoe (croaker, sea bass, flounder, sea bream sashimi), which includes this season's fish, plus an extra ₩20,000 of tuna sashimi. That's croaker, sea bass, flounder, sea bream, and tuna — five kinds in total, haha. Since we planned to eat at the market, we asked to be connected to the restaurant that works with Yeongjae Susan.

Sashimi sliced thick, exactly as requested

We waited at the restaurant and the sashimi arrived. They sliced it exactly to the thickness we wanted — I asked for it a bit thick so I could really feel the texture, and they cut it perfectly to size.

I wondered if it might be too much for two people, but it was so good that it wasn't a problem at all — we ended up finishing it all, haha. At first I thought we'd accidentally ordered all white fish, but each one actually tasted different, which turned out to be even better. Similar white fish, yet totally different in texture and flavor — comparing them was fun.

The main platter had a gorgeous glossy sheen, and eating tuna in between the other fish made a great combo. No bones at all, and there was even some fin meat, which was delicious. The flounder and sea bream were chewy and tasty too. The sashimi was sliced at just the right thickness, giving it a satisfying bite, with sweetness coming through and zero fishiness.

Market restaurant table charge: 10,000 won per person

They also sold non-alcoholic beer, so we shared a bottle. This restaurant charged ₩10,000 per person, which included the table setting and the fish stew.

It was delicious dipped in soy sauce with a touch of wasabi, and just as good wrapped in lettuce with garlic and makjang (spicy fermented sauce).

The tuna quality was great too, and since we ordered tuna, they gave us seaweed on the side as well.

If you like your sashimi cut thick, I recommend Yeongjae Susan.

Spicy fish stew and sashimi shabu-shabu

Partway through the sashimi I wanted something hot, so we ordered the stew. When it arrived, the broth was so good that I honestly finished it down to the last drop — it's been a while since that happened.

We were enjoying it so much the sashimi disappeared in no time, haha.

The assorted sashimi platter nearly finished

The owner was generous, and above all, the freshness and quality of the sashimi were excellent, so overall I was very satisfied. Whether you want fresh seasonal sashimi to go or you're looking for a great fish restaurant at Garak Market, I highly recommend Yeongjae Susan.
