Yeonnam-dong bakery: last cucumber baguette of the day, Mandong Jegwa
In short
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a takeout-only bakery at 32 Yeonhui-ro in Seodaemun, Seoul, near Yeonnam-dong. On the way back from a café in Hongdae, one taste sample of the cucumber baguette led to an unplanned takeout of four breads: cucumber baguette, cappuccino, red bean cream, and eongdeongi. Of the four, the cucumber baguette won, with crunchy pickled cucumber running through it.

I was on my way home after stopping by a café in Hongdae.
I'd just come from a café, so I wasn't planning to stop anywhere else — but Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch caught my eye as I walked past. I'd seen it a few times while searching for Yeonnam-dong bakeries, so I thought 'oh, so this is the place' and walked right in.
At first I only meant to look around, but the cucumber baguette I tried as a free sample was way better than I expected, so I ended up packing four kinds of bread to go. Out of everything I tried that day, the cucumber baguette was the one that stuck with me most.

Where is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, what are the hours, and is it takeout only?
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is at 32 Yeonhui-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, and it's open daily from 11:00 to 21:00. There's no seating to eat in — it's takeout only — and there's no parking.

Mandong Jegwa has no space to eat in, only takeout. It seems like a good stop if you're already in Hongdae for coffee or a meal and walking around the Yeonnam-dong area.
Afternoon visit: how much bread was left on the shelves
I visited Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch in the afternoon, and looking at the display case, it seemed like quite a lot of bread had already sold out.

While I was checking out what was left, a staff member came over and gave me samples of a mugwort rice-cake pastry and the cucumber baguette. Both were tasty, but the cucumber baguette was especially good.
There was only one piece left, so I thought 'I need to grab this first' and put it straight in my basket.

The garlic baguette is well known here too, so I was curious about it, but the cucumber baguette I'd already tasted pulled me in more that day. Along with it, I picked a cappuccino, a red bean cream, and an eongdeongi, for four kinds in total.

Cucumber baguette, the best bread of the day at Mandong Jegwa
Mandong Jegwa's cucumber baguette was the best of the four breads I brought home. It was also the first one I ate once I got there.

Honestly, just hearing the name, it sounded a little unusual. I wasn't sure if cucumber's distinct smell would go well with a baguette, but once I tried it, it was so good it genuinely surprised me.
The baguette had a crisp crust, and the sauce and cucumber inside went really well together. What stood out especially was that the cucumber wasn't just raw cucumber — it had a texture more like thin cucumber pickles, giving it a satisfying crunch. I also liked that the cucumber kept the overall flavor from feeling heavy.

Of everything I bought this time, the cucumber baguette was the best. I think I'd buy it again if I came back.
Cappuccino bread with a gentle coffee aroma
Mandong Jegwa's cappuccino was a cream bun that, true to its name, had a mellow coffee aroma. If I had to pick a second item I'd want to eat again after the cucumber baguette, it would probably be the cappuccino.

When there's too little cream it's disappointing, and when there's too much it can get heavy after a while. The amount I got was just right — not too little, not too much. The coffee-flavored powder dusted on top worked nicely with the cream and bread together, and I enjoyed it a lot.
Ang cream bread with cream cheese and red bean
Mandong Jegwa's red bean cream had both cream cheese and red bean paste inside. If you like red bean and cream cheese, it's an easy one to enjoy.

The sweetness of the red beans was joined by the cream cheese, and there was a nutty cheese aroma near the top of the bread as well.
Eongdeongi, the bread with the texture I liked most
The cutely named eongdeongi from Mandong Jegwa stuck with me because it had exactly the kind of bread texture I like.

It felt like a soft, chewy soft roll, and it went well with the cream inside too. If I had to compare it, I'd say it's like a delicious milk cream bread, just with a slightly chewier texture. The cream was good, but this bread's texture in particular made it especially enjoyable.
Was the unplanned bread haul at Mandong Jegwa worth it?
I'd just come from a café and honestly wasn't planning to buy any bread, but I ended up walking into Mandong Jegwa and packing four different kinds.
It was a place I'd seen a few times while searching for Yeonnam-dong bakeries and Hongdae spots, but visiting in person, there was real fun in picking out breads that aren't so common. And above all, the one I liked most, hands down, was the cucumber baguette. The cucumber-and-baguette combo felt a bit unfamiliar at first, but once I tried it, I understood why it's so memorable.
Next time I want to get the cucumber baguette again, and also try the garlic baguette I missed this time. If you're searching for Hongdae bakeries or Yeonnam-dong spots and want to try something a little different from usual, Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is worth keeping in mind.

- Anyone looking for a takeout bakery in Yeonnam-dong
- Anyone who likes a crisp baguette
- Anyone curious to try an uncommon kind of bread
- Anyone who wants to grab bread to go after visiting Hongdae or Yeonnam-dong
A Yeonnam-dong bakery I'll remember especially for its distinctive cucumber baguette.
If you had to pick just one thing at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, it'd be the cucumber baguette, with that satisfying crunch of cucumber pickle still alive in every bite.
