Mapo café for fig cream cheese baguettes: Boulangerie Copain
In short
Boulangerie Copain is a French bakery café in Mapo, Seoul, known for baguettes and croissants. My wife and I tried the fig cream cheese baguette, plain and chocolate baguettes, croissants, and mini brioche; even the reheated brioche was moist and soft the next day. Verdict: Boulangerie Copain is a must for anyone who loves honest flour and butter flavor.

A bread display full of buttery flavor and nutty wheat aroma

Follow the welcoming yellow sign inside, and you will spot the Master of Life certification mark right at the entrance. True to a bakery baking classic French breads, the interior was cozy and filled with the most delicious smell.

One side of the shop has a framed photo from the owner’s Master of Life appearance, along with menus for various coffees and drinks. As a bread lover, my eyes naturally went to the display, where so many appetizing breads had me happily agonizing over what to choose.

Along with baguettes and croissants, there were sandwiches, palmier pastries, and all kinds of other breads waiting for us. Bread always gets me excited enough to want to put every last one in my basket, so it makes me sad that I cannot.

I chose a baguette, chocolate baguette, fig cream cheese baguette, croissant, and mini brioche. Since they are famous for baguettes and croissants, there was no way I could skip them—and the brioche had already become a word-of-mouth favorite too.
A trio of skillful baguettes: crisp outside, chewy within

The first item I picked was the fig cream cheese baguette (₩5,500). Rather than the heaviness of ordinary cream cheese, it was generously filled with a far more refined, fresh cream cheese with a hint of tangy peach yogurt. Add figs that are half-dried, their sweetness deliciously concentrated and chewy, and it all comes together perfectly in your mouth.

The plain baguette (₩4,500), this shop’s signature, absolutely lived up to its reputation. A great baguette should not be rock-hard enough to scrape the roof of your mouth: its crust should be thin and crackle brightly as it breaks, while its crumb should hold plenty of moisture and stay chewy. Boulangerie Copain’s baguette is exactly that. The more you chew, the more deeply its naturally sweet wheat flavor, slight saltiness, and nutty aroma come through, making it wonderful even torn off and eaten plain without jam or butter.

The chocolate baguette (₩7,000) was excellent too. It is not the sweet-only flavor of cheap chocolate; Valrhona chocolate’s distinctive, gently bitter and sophisticated cocoa notes pair wonderfully with the baguette’s nutty dough. The chocolate chips that pop up throughout add a cheerful kick, making this a must-grab for chocolate fanatics.
A flaky croissant and cloud-like brioche

Here is another signature from the master baker: the croissant (₩4,500). It is quite large, yet feather-light when you pick it up. Split it open and you will see a dense honeycomb of air pockets created by well-fermented dough. The outside shatters crisply like fallen leaves, while the inside pulls apart softly along its layers. One bite fills your mouth with the rich flavor of premium butter.

I had the mini brioche (₩4,500) at home after work the next day, lightly warmed in the air fryer at 180°C for 4 minutes. It was not overly greasy, and the bread itself was fluffy like eating a cloud, soft as silk. Even after a day, its moist crumb came back to life as if it had just been baked. I tore off a big piece of warm brioche, spread it with jam, and paired it with a cold glass of white milk 🥛—that spot became heaven on earth. I really regretted not bringing home the large size.
Tips to know before visiting Boulangerie Copain
- If you do not see the plain baguette on display, ask a staff member at the counter and they will bring out fresh bread.
- For baguettes, chocolate baguettes, campagne loaves, and other baguette-style breads, ask for slicing when you pay and they will cut them into easy-to-eat pieces. I struggled a bit slicing mine at home.
- After 7 PM, purchases over ₩20,000 receive 20% off, while purchases over ₩30,000 receive 30% off. The selection may be smaller late in the day, but it is a good time to stock up on affordable baguettes or table breads for the freezer.
Bread faithful to the true flavor of flour and butter
As I savored each bread, I completely understood why Mangwon-dong is called a pilgrimage destination for bread lovers, and why Boulangerie Copain has remained so beloved for nearly 20 years. This is not bread that catches your eye with loud, flashy toppings; it shines through a delicious nuttiness that takes the true flavors of flour and butter to the limit. If tough baguettes that scrape the roof of your mouth have disappointed you, I strongly recommend trying this master baker’s baguette, the textbook example of crisp outside and chewy inside!

A great tip for anyone who cannot make it all the way to the Mangwon-dong alleyways! Major Boulangerie Copain items, including its baguettes, are also easy to buy on Market Kurly. The baguette is already an enormous bestseller there with more than 20,000 reviews, so order one for a weekend-morning home café and warm it lightly in the air fryer. 😊
