Mapo Korean restaurant for a mother-daughter lunch: Usu

In short

Usu is a Korean restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, with private rooms for course meals. My mother and I enjoyed Lunch C at 79,000 won per person, from bite-sized dishes and individual Hanwoo grills to sea bream pot rice and corn ice cream, plus 3 hours of free parking. Usu is a lovely choice when the conversation matters as much as the meal.

Usu Lunch C Korean course meal in Gongdeok

Today, I took my mom to Usu in Gongdeok, a great Korean restaurant! When dining with your parents, delicious food matters, of course—but so does whether it is too noisy, whether parking is easy, and whether you can eat slowly while chatting, right?

Usu has private rooms where you can enjoy a Korean course meal, so it was wonderful for taking my mom. I could also see why people choose it for important meals such as family gatherings or sanggyeollye (a formal meeting between the two families before a wedding)! I had the Lunch C Course, ₩79,000 per person! Starting with small bite-sized dishes and ending with Hanwoo charcoal grilling and a full meal, the flow of the course was lovely and the food was delicious too! In particular, grilling Hanwoo on an individual brazier was much more convenient than I expected:)

Usu near Gongdeok Station and parking

Usu's Gongdeok branch is in Lotte Castle President, close to Gongdeok Station! Gongdeok has lots of offices and convenient transport, making it an easy place for family gatherings or business meals—but if you drive, it is also a neighborhood where parking fees can quietly become a concern 💸💸💸

Usu offers 3 hours of free parking with a meal!! That is enough time to enjoy a leisurely course meal and still have time left for coffee nearby! Considering parking prices around Gongdeok, I think this is quite a big plus when visiting by car with your parents. It is easy to reach by public transport too, and driving there means less parking stress, so the location worked well for anyone looking for a Gongdeok family-meeting restaurant.

What was the private-room atmosphere like?

Quiet private dining room at Usu

The thing I liked most when I entered Usu was, of course, the private-room atmosphere! It was very quiet overall, and the soft lighting in the room made it nice to have a comfortable meal while talking with my mom.

Even places called private-room restaurants can turn out to have lots of sound coming through from the next room, or staff constantly passing by and making things feel hectic. Here, though, the atmosphere let us focus calmly on the course throughout the meal. It did not feel overly traditional like some Korean set-menu restaurants; instead, it was clean, polished, and upscale. I would recommend it not only for a meal with parents, but also for a Seoul sanggyeollye restaurant or a business gathering where you need to talk quietly! Since sanggyeollye is where both families meet for the first time, having a private room where you do not have to worry about nearby tables is important, and this place definitely has an advantage there!

Usu Lunch C Course: ₩79,000 per person

Usu Lunch C Course menu

The menu my mom and I had that day was Usu's Lunch C Course, ₩79,000 per person! It is a Korean course that does not bring out the Hanwoo immediately: you taste lighter dishes one by one first, then move on to the main Hanwoo and the meal. It felt a little different from a typical hansik set meal, where many side dishes are laid out all at once. Because we could slowly enjoy each small dish, the meal itself unfolded like a proper course.

Each time a dish came out, the staff explained what ingredients it was made with, and the pacing was just right—neither bringing the next dish before we had finished nor making us wait too long. That was one reason it was so nice to eat slowly while chatting with my mom!

What the Lunch C Course included

Before the course began, they showed us this presentation box, and I loved being able to see the ingredients we would be eating that day with my own eyes!

Beef-and-chicken jinjuk and three bite-sized dishes

The first dish was beef-and-chicken jinjuk, a savory porridge. Made with a base of Hanwoo bone broth and chicken stock, it felt like a warm opening for the stomach before the course properly began! Starting with a soft porridge rather than something intense made it easy to move on to the next dishes too.

Second were three bite-sized dishes, which I personally found so fun! They were genuinely small enough to eat in one bite, but rather than simple finger food, each felt like a complete, proper dish packed into a single bite!

Shiitake shrimp and zucchini dish

Third came shiitake shrimp and zucchini together. The shiitake shrimp used shrimp and Grade A shiitake mushrooms, while the zucchini dish included tofu, aged kimchi, and golden enoki mushrooms. The peanut tofu sauce and chamnamul (Korean parsley) oil were reaaally delicious! For me, that sauce was the star of this dish!!

Abalone five-color gardenia noodles

Next were the abalone five-color gardenia noodles, pretty from the colors alone! Gardenia noodles were topped with abalone, shredded radish with black sesame, bracken fern, shiitake mushrooms, seasoned chamnamul, perilla leaf, and more, served with galtae dressing and a mustard-garlic sauce! After the warm, nutty dishes before it, this felt like a refreshing reset for the palate, so I liked its place in the course too.

Grilled Hanwoo and sea bream pot-rice table setting

The final main was grilled Hanwoo and a bansang (a Korean table setting)! The bansang included pot rice with seasonal sea bream, and before serving the rice, they first showed us the finished pot. A whole sea bream sat on top, so it looked amazing, and after showing it to us, they prepared it to make it easy to eat. It made us feel really looked after too!

Individual-brazier Hanwoo grilling course

The Hanwoo arrived partially grilled and cut into bite-sized pieces, and we lightly grilled it further on our individual braziers to our liking. Since everyone has their own brazier, each person can cook it to their preferred doneness. This especially made me think it would be good for a sanggyeollye restaurant too!! Even at a gathering that might feel a little awkward, everyone can eat comfortably and focus on the conversation :) Finishing with warm sea bream pot rice and grilled Hanwoo left me satisfyingly full, even though we had been eating the course in small portions all along:)

Lunch C corn ice cream

Corn ice cream

Lunch C ended with corn ice cream! After a filling meal of grilled Hanwoo and sea bream pot rice, I liked that the final dessert was not too heavy. It had corn's distinctive nutty, gently sweet flavor, so it was easy to enjoy without feeling burdensome and just right for refreshing the palate at the end! From the first beef-and-chicken jinjuk through the bite-sized dishes, grilled Hanwoo and bansang, and dessert, the progression was lovely, and this dessert wrapped up the Lunch C Course on a happy note:)

Lunch C does not begin with heavy food, but with dishes that gently wake up your appetite. I think each dish matters in a course meal, but the order in which they arrive matters quite a lot too. At Usu, the flavors built step by step from the start, so I was never bored while eating 🧡 It is Korean food at its base, but the plating and ingredient combinations felt interpreted in a more modern way! So even when familiar ingredients appeared, it was fun in a different way from the Korean set meals I usually have‼️

Why it suited sanggyeollye and meals with parents

Sanggyeollye is an important occasion, but because it is the first time both families meet, it can naturally be a little awkward, right? Rather than having one big grill in the middle that someone has to keep tending, everyone has an individual brazier in front of them, and the Hanwoo arrives partially grilled and bite-sized. That means everyone can eat comfortably while focusing on the conversation!

Add quiet private rooms, and it felt like a setup that suits a sanggyeollye restaurant very well. The food comes at an appropriate pace, and the staff explain each course clearly, which also gives the atmosphere a natural lift from time to time. Even if it is not for sanggyeollye, I think this is a Gongdeok private-room restaurant well suited to meals with parents, family gatherings, and business meetings—occasions where conversation matters as much as the food.

My overall take on Lunch C with my mom

Usu Lunch C Course meal

Usu, the Gongdeok restaurant I visited with my mom. The Lunch C Course I had was ₩79,000 per person, and we could slowly enjoy everything from small bite-sized dishes and varied course dishes to Hanwoo grilled on a brazier and a bansang. The bite-sized dishes were especially fun because each seemed to hold one complete dish in a single bite, while the main Hanwoo came partially grilled and bite-sized and could be comfortably finished on an individual brazier.

The food was delicious overall, and the staff service and explanations of the dishes were good too. With its quiet private rooms and soft atmosphere, individual-brazier Hanwoo grilling, and 3 hours of free parking, this is somewhere I would recommend to people looking for a meal with parents like my mom, a family gathering, a business meal, or a private Seoul sanggyeollye restaurant!
