Chadol jjamppong and mini tangsuyuk for four: Jjampponggwan Wirye

In short

Jjampponggwan Wirye Branch is a Chinese restaurant in the Wirye Ipark 2 commercial building in Songpa, Seoul. This visit ordered chadol jjamppong (beef brisket spicy noodle soup), original jjamppong, jjajangmyeon, and mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) all at once to test the smoky beef broth and the surprisingly generous mini portion. With a self-serve bar and unlimited rice, it's an easy pick for a family meal.

Chadol jjamppong and Chinese food spread at Jjampponggwan Wirye Branch

If you had to name the classic crowd-pleasing meal loved by everyone from kids to grandparents, it would have to include the combo of smoky jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), sweet and savory jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), and crispy tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). This time I visited a new Chinese restaurant in Wirye New Town that's been building buzz for its real wok-hei flavor and generous portions — Jjampponggwan Wirye Branch.

From the chadol jjamppong with its rich beef broth flavor, to the clean and spicy original jjamppong, to the jjajangmyeon that won over both kids and adults, to the crispy-outside-tender-inside tangsuyuk that surprised me with its size despite being the mini option — every dish delivered. Here's the full rundown of my visit.

What's the atmosphere like at Jjampponggwan Wirye Branch?

As befits a newly opened Chinese restaurant in Wirye, the clean and pleasant vibe hit me the moment I walked through the door.

Bright, modern café-style interior of the restaurant

A clean space fit for family meals or dates: Unlike the somewhat cluttered feel of typical neighborhood Chinese restaurants, this place is decorated with a bright, modern café-style interior that put me in a good mood the moment I stepped in. The tables are spaced generously and the interior is well kept, making it a great Wirye Chinese restaurant for family meals, office lunches, or dates alike.

Self-serve bar and rice

A thoughtful self-serve bar and unlimited rice: There was a neatly kept self-serve corner with free pickled radish, onion, and white kimchi. Plenty of rice was on hand for mixing into the rich jjamppong broth or jjajang sauce, which boosted the value and satisfaction even more.

Generously stocked rice station

We ordered the signature chadol jjamppong, the solid classic jjamppong, the crowd-favorite jjajangmyeon, and mini tangsuyuk as a side dish.

Chadol jjamppong: peak smokiness and savoriness

A bowl piled generously with beef brisket: The generous pile of chadol (thinly sliced beef brisket) on top of the broth caught my eye right away. Quickly seared over high heat, it carried a deep smoky aroma, and the savory brisket juices blended with the spicy broth for a rich, deep body.

Chewy jjamppong noodles soaked in chadol broth

Chewy noodles fully soaked in broth: The noodles kept their chewiness without going soft, and they soaked up the spicy, savory chadol broth so well that every slurp brought a burst of rich flavor.

Cool and spicy classic jjamppong done right

A clean, refreshing harmony of seafood and vegetables: The original jjamppong wasn't greasy at all and had a very clean, spicy aftertaste. Loaded with fresh seafood like squid and clams plus crisply stir-fried vegetables, the broth's refreshing quality stood out — a perfect choice for curing a hangover too.

Glossy, umami-packed jjajangmyeon

Jjajangmyeon with glossy jjajang sauce

The deep flavor of sweet, salty chunjang: The glossy jjajang sauce wasn't overpowering or overly sweet, keeping a clean, savory umami that made it a standout jjajangmyeon among Wirye restaurants. The finely diced meat and onion had great texture, and it was hard to put the spoon down — I wanted to scrape up every bit of leftover sauce with rice.

Is this really the mini size? Surprisingly generous tangsuyuk

More generous and crispier than expected: I ordered the mini size just to sample it as a side dish, but I was surprised at how generous the portion was the moment it arrived at the table.

Freshly fried in clean oil, the pale golden batter was crispy outside and chewy inside, and the thick pork loin was moist without any gamey taste — every piece was deeply satisfying.

Final thoughts

Jjampponggwan Wirye Branch turned out to be a Wirye Chinese restaurant where every dish we ordered was above average — from the smoky, rich chadol jjamppong, to the clean jjamppong, to the solid jjajangmyeon, to the generously portioned, great-value tangsuyuk.
