Hwaseong Korean BBQ lunch date: hanwoo beef tartare, Jipbul Taebaek

In short

Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Yeongcheon-dong, Dongtan, Hwaseong, where pork neck is seared over organic straw fire and staff grill it tableside from start to finish. A lunch visit at Jipbul Taebaek covered straw-fire pork neck with green onion kimchi and bean powder, a first bite served on rice cake with kimchi, four house sauces, hanwoo beef tartare, and kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew). Between the atmosphere and the grilling service, Jipbul Taebaek works just as well for a lunch date as for a group dinner.

A Hwaseong date spot in Yeongcheon-dong, a BBQ restaurant that grills over straw fire — my lunch review of Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch.

Visiting Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch in Yeongcheon-dong, Hwaseong

The day I found my forever BBQ spot right in the middle of Yeongcheon-dong, Hwaseong. Atmosphere, taste, and service all landed perfectly — Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan is more than good enough for a date course.

Interior of the BBQ restaurant with a soft, dreamy atmosphere

What is the atmosphere like at Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch?

Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch sits on Jisan 2-gil in Yeongcheon-dong, Hwaseong — a BBQ place, and yet somehow the atmosphere is soft and dreamy?? My friend saw it and immediately said this would be a great spot for a company dinner.

The owner and staff greeted us warmly, and the moment we sat down they handed us aprons and got everything set — so sweet mode activated.

Clean restaurant interior with lunchtime customers

The first thing that caught my eye walking in was how clean and pleasant the interior was. Even though we came slightly off peak lunch hours, this place was packed — probably because the food is just that good.

Interior blending roof tiles with modern materials

A modern space with Korean aesthetic touches, giving off a refined feel. Roof tiles mixed with contemporary materials create an interior that feels less like a typical BBQ joint and more like an upscale butcher's dining room or a dining bar.

Looks like a lot of baseball players have eaten here too — framed photos with them, along with carefully written autographs, proudly displayed on the wall.

As soon as we ordered, a neat spread of banchan (side dishes) arrived — carefully arranged pickled vegetables, green onion kimchi, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), and a fresh lettuce salad, all appetite-whetting basics.

Grill topped with fernbrake and kimchi

Before any meat went on, the owner laid down fernbrake and kimchi first, wiped down the grill with beef fat, and then vanished quietly.

Pork neck seared over straw fire

Straw-fire pork neck, grilled by staff from start to finish

This one's ours ^^ Straw-fire pork neck! Seared over high heat from organic straw fire, it comes out looking gorgeous, with grill marks so vivid it made my mouth water on sight.

One of the biggest perks here is the expert grilling service. Thick cuts of meat can easily lose their juices or end up burnt outside and raw inside when you grill it yourself, but here a skilled staff member grills it carefully from start to finish — all we had to do was eat.

They cut each piece into bite-sized portions with care, turning it constantly so the juices don't escape, hitting exactly the right level of doneness for maximum flavor.

Dipped deep into bean powder alongside this green onion kimchi, it's so good it's honestly dangerous — you won't stop eating.

Vivid grill marks on the surface, cooked with meticulous care — this pork neck is seriously tasty. Their marinated ribs are great too, but honestly, the pork neck holds its own.

The first bite: pork neck on rice cake with kimchi

The standard move for the first bite is dipping in salt to taste the meat's true flavor, but at Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan the owner instead places the perfectly grilled first piece over thin rice cake slices and kimchi.

First bite of meat served over rice cake and kimchi

Who could resist drooling at this? Soft grilled rice cake, kimchi, and meat all together. Deep smoky fire flavor lingers through your whole mouth alongside the tender texture of the meat.

Dip it in the house sauce and the flavor gets even more incredible.

Kimchi jjigae and the four house sauces

Before the thrill of that first bite even faded, the kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) arrived. A must-have alongside grilled meat — the tangy kick of well-fermented aged kimchi hits just right.

They offer a full four house sauces, so you can pick whichever suits your taste. Perfect pairings, executed with solid basics — nothing more you could ask for.

Four house sauces to choose from

Right as we walked in, another table was celebrating a birthday — fireworks and a full birthday song blasted for them, so those guests must have been thrilled. This place goes all out with service.

Even dipped in wasabi, it's incredibly good.

Green onion kimchi + bean powder + pork neck = perfection. Savory, salty, richly meaty — everything about it just works.

Hanwoo beef tartare, ordered alongside the pork neck

We didn't want to stick to just pork. My tartare-obsessed friend ordered the beef tartare (hanwoo yukhoe) — perfect for us, since at wedding buffets we're the type to go straight for the tartare table.

Clearly fresh vegetables, and the freshness of the Korean beef was obvious just looking at it.

Pop the egg yolk, mix it with pear and sprouts, and take a bite — it literally melts in your mouth. This was the moment the owner's service really shone; we were moved again and again throughout the meal.

Dessert coffee served after the meal

After finishing the meal at Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch, there's dessert coffee waiting for you on the way out. I think I get why this is the one place always packed with customers. Next time, I'm coming back for the premium marinated ribs.
