12-banchan hanjeongsik lunch with kids in Jungnang, Seoul: Sanchaega
In short
Sanchaega Hanjeongsik Meokgol Main Branch is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-menu) restaurant in Jungnang, Seoul, a short walk from Meokgol Station, where the Gondre Cauldron Rice Special Course costs 18,000 won per person. Even with a weekend lunch reservation the wait was about 20 minutes, but the 12 side dishes from seasoned greens to braised potatoes were good, and the child at the table happily ate the bracken fern and grilled flounder. Sanchaega suits a family meal built around tasting a little of everything.

We wanted a proper hanjeongsik (Korean set-course meal) with the family this weekend, so we went to Sanchaega Hanjeongsik Meokgol Main Branch. I'd been searching for a good hanjeongsik spot near Meokgol Station, and the bottom line is: every single side dish was genuinely delicious, so this ended up being a satisfying find near Meokgol Station.
Whenever we eat Korean food with our kid, I always worry about whether there'll be anything she'll actually eat. But this time she ate everything from bracken fern to grilled flounder so well that she nearly finished a whole bowl of rice. 😊

Do you need a reservation for weekend lunch at Sanchaega?
We visited during weekend lunch and had made a Naver reservation ahead of time. I assumed we'd walk right in since we'd booked, but the place was so busy that we ended up waiting about 20 minutes anyway.

Worth keeping in mind: even with a reservation for weekend lunch, you may still wait a bit. That's how many families come here to eat.
What comes with the 18,000-won Gondre Cauldron Rice Special Course
We ordered the Gondre Cauldron Rice Special Course. At ₩18,000 per person, the spread was really generous — gondre (mountain herb) cauldron rice, 12 side dishes, grilled flounder, stir-fried pork, wraps, grilled dried pollack, grilled deodeok (mountain bellflower root), and doenjang stew, all covering the table.

Even in photos, the table looks completely full. Instead of eating just one main dish, you get to sample a little of everything, which made it a great setup for bringing parents or having a family meal out.

The parboiled squid and the seasoned greens were especially popular with our kid — she even asked for more later.

The 12 side dishes worth finishing at this Jungnang hanjeongsik
What I liked most at Sanchaega was honestly not the flashy main dishes but the basic side dishes. At a lot of hanjeongsik places you get tons of banchan, but only a few you actually keep reaching for. Here, I tried the seasoned greens one by one and every single one was delicious.
The seasoned greens in particular were fantastic, and even the plain-looking braised potatoes kept pulling me back. It didn't feel like the number of dishes was just padded out — it felt like each one was properly made, like real home cooking. The spicy stir-fried pork paired well with the wrap greens, and with grilled dried pollack and grilled deodeok on top of that, a bowl of rice disappeared fast. Add the savory doenjang stew and I thought, this is exactly why people eat hanjeongsik.

Is Sanchaega good with kids? Bracken fern and grilled flounder
We brought our kid along, and this meal stands out because she ate so well. She especially loved the seasoned bracken fern and the grilled flounder — one bite, then asking for more, then more again... 😂 We picked the flounder off the bone and gave it to her with rice, and she loved it; the bracken fern was a surprise hit too.

Between the gondre rice and small bits of the side dishes, she practically finished a full bowl. One nice thing about hanjeongsik places is that you don't have to worry about a separate kids' menu — you can just pick from the many side dishes on the table.

Finishing the meal with scorched rice from the cauldron
And the real finish to gondre cauldron rice is the scorched rice at the bottom. After scooping out the rice, we got the warm scorched rice at the end, and it was the perfect close. Even though the many side dishes had already filled us up, there was still room for that.
A full spread of greens, fish, meat, and stew, capped off with scorched rice — it really felt like a complete meal.

If you're looking for a hanjeongsik restaurant near Meokgol Station to bring your parents or have a family meal out with kids, Sanchaega Hanjeongsik Meokgol Main Branch was a good pick. If, like us, you enjoy sampling a little of many dishes, I'd recommend the Gondre Cauldron Rice Special Course. Personally, the main dishes were great, but what stuck with me most was how good even the basic banchan — the greens and potatoes — were. Somewhere I'd happily return to next time I'm craving Korean food near Meokgol Station. 😊
