Why a 9-year-old asked for a perm at "a place that does hair well"

My 9-year-old son is starting to care about looking good, and this time he asked to get a stylish perm somewhere other than our neighborhood salon — somewhere that's actually good at hair. Haha. So we went to Juno Hair Songdo Crystal Ocean, known around Songdo for doing great boys' hair.

Kids' hair takes more work than adults' and styling isn't easy, so I booked with designer Junbo, who has a lot of experience styling boys' hair.

Out of two years of getting him perms, this was the one both my son and I liked most, so let me show the before and after right away. A good haircut really does make the man, haha.

This Incheon Songdo hair salon stands as its own building on the first floor of Crystal Ocean Square. There's parking in the underground lot and plenty of space.

A salon with a wide-open ocean-view window — even my son could tell just from the outside how upscale it looked.

Walking inside, the spacious, clean, sophisticated interior felt healing even before the styling started. The staff were all friendly too.

Since the salon has its own building with room to spare, the styling stations weren't crammed together but kept a comfortable distance — a salon where you can get Songdo hair consulting at ease.

What designer Junbo checked in the head-shape and face-shape consultation

Designer Junbo had a friendly, likable presence, so having a male designer wasn't awkward at all. Before the actual service, we had a detailed consultation — he carefully checked my son's head shape and face shape first.

He asked when my son's last salon visit was and carefully explained which curl would suit his hair type and head shape — the kind of expertise you'd expect from a director known for Songdo men's hair. And since kids can't manage their hair every morning the way adults do, he said he'd keep it easy to style while still natural and clean — which was exactly what I, as a mom, wanted to hear.

How a boy's junior perm works, from the cut to the heat treatment

After the consultation, even during the shampoo, he kindly checked in to make sure my son was comfortable.

It had been a while since his last haircut so his hair was messy and overgrown, but the cut was done very carefully and thoughtfully.

I've seen countless boys' haircuts over nine years, but even just from the cut alone, this clean, polished styling really impressed me. 👍👍

For kids' perms, it matters that the product doesn't irritate their scalp — he used gentle products and checked everything carefully.

During the service, he kept checking whether my son was uncomfortable or bored, and helped him relax, so my son could get through it comfortably. Thanks to designer Junbo's kind, attentive care, I could wait more comfortably too.

Thanks to that, I got to enjoy some healing time with coffee and a sweet dessert too. Haha.

While the heat treatment and neutralizing were happening, they brought my son a drink so he could have a little screen time.

The finished junior perm and how to style it at home

After neutralizing and shampooing, the curl came out just right — not overdone, natural and pretty! Since he's had kids' perms steadily since last year, I could already tell from the wet hair that this one turned out well.

No excessive frizz, just a style that hugged his face shape nicely — I loved it. My son was already smiling, clearly pleased too. 😊

Just from blow-drying it, his hair transformed into a totally stylish look. 😍

It was trendy enough that he could've walked out just like that, while still keeping that cute little-kid feel — both of us were really happy with it.

He's usually only gotten his hair done by female designers, but this time getting the cut and perm from designer Junbo, a Songdo director known for men's hair, I could see how clean the finish was everywhere — from his sideburns to the back and side lines, nothing missed. It really confirmed that a male designer just gets men's hair.

Which sections to dry quickly with cool air, how to style the front line with warm air, even a curling oil safe for kids to use — designer Junbo shared all his tips generously.

He didn't just finish the perm and send us off — he kindly explained easy ways to maintain it at home too, which made styling my son's hair in the mornings so much easier. Just a light blow-dry and a bit of shaping after shampooing looks way more polished and clean.

Out of every haircut we've gotten at a Songdo hair salon, this one was by far my favorite. Juno Hair really is different.

There's also an extra discount if you buy a membership card, which caught my interest.

We finished off with a sweet candy, and the whole perm took about 2 hours. It definitely took a bit longer because of how careful and detailed the work was, but the result was well worth the wait.

What I realized from this junior perm experience is that with boys' hair, it's less about chasing whatever style is trendy and more about considering the head shape, face shape, and hair condition together. Everyone who saw him asked if he'd gotten a perm and told him he looked cool, which made him happy — and I felt proud getting him a nice haircut right before Chuseok. This time we went with designer Junbo, and since my son felt comfortable throughout and we loved the result, we're planning to go back next time too. 🤗
