Indian curry dinner with parents in Dongseong-ro, Daegu: Rama & Babana

In short

Rama & Babana Dongseong-ro Main Branch is an Indian restaurant in Jung-gu, Daegu, that moved here from its old spot by the north gate of Kyungpook National University. After work, the writer came with both parents and ordered chicken curry, shrimp curry, tandoori cream chicken (14,000 won), plain naan, butter garlic naan and rice — the portions were bigger than expected, and the three of them finished everything. Rama & Babana is a good-value Dongseong-ro curry restaurant that even satisfied a father who already loves Indian food.

After work, I took my parents out for dinner at Rama & Babana Dongseong-ro Main Branch, a well-known spot in Dongseong-ro, Daegu.

Where is Rama & Babana Dongseong-ro Main Branch, and where can you park?

The restaurant doesn't have its own parking lot, so we paid to park at Daeseong Parking Lot nearby. Parking fees around Dongseong-ro are all pretty much the same anyway, so we chose Daeseong for its convenient location and clean facilities. For reference, Rama & Babana Dongseong-ro Main Branch is also easy to reach by transit, within a 5-minute walk from Exit 10 of Banwoldang Station on Daegu Subway Line 2.

Rama & Babana used to be a famous Indian restaurant near the north gate of Kyungpook National University, but that location closed and it seems to have opened new branches in Dongseong-ro and Suseong Lake instead. I used to go there a lot as a student, so it brought back a lot of memories. My dad said he used to be a regular there too back when it was near the university's north gate, but he had no idea it had opened a branch in Dongseong-ro.

Inside Rama & Babana: the room and the full order

Rama & Babana sits right at the entrance to Tongsin-golmok alley, so it's easy to find — just look for the burgundy building that's visible from a distance. Inside, we took a quiet-looking window seat. The place isn't very big, but it's quite clean overall. Ordering is done directly through the tablet at each table. We ordered chicken curry, shrimp curry, tandoori cream chicken, plain naan, butter garlic naan, and one rice.

After chatting for a bit while we waited, everything we ordered arrived at once. Once it was all laid out, the portions were way bigger than I expected. My dad really loves Indian food and has been to pretty much every decent Indian restaurant in Daegu, but he says Rama & Babana is honestly the best value and the tastiest. At least for my taste, this place suits me best.

How spicy is the chicken curry at Rama & Babana?

Rama & Babana's chicken curry is on the mildly spicy side, but it's packed with garlic, so even people who can't handle spice much will keep reaching for it. Piled onto golden naan, it just keeps disappearing. By the way, they give you plastic gloves too, so you can comfortably tear off pieces of naan by hand and dip away.

Shrimp curry with naan: how the two curries pair

The shrimp curry was incredibly smooth, and it had several plump, large shrimp in it. The combination of spicy chicken curry and mellow shrimp curry worked really well together.

Tandoori cream chicken at 14,000 won: how big is the portion?

The tandoori cream chicken is ₩14,000, and honestly I expected maybe 3-4 pieces of chicken, but way more came out than I thought. Honestly, it's tastier and better value than buying brand-name fried chicken these days. The sauce really sticks to your tongue, and eating it with warm white rice was pure bliss.

We really scraped the plates clean without leaving a single bite. My dad was so satisfied that it made bringing him along worth it.
