It had been a while since I'd craved spicy, tender galbijjim (braised short ribs), so my girlfriend and I made it part of a Seomyeon date.
We went to Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch, right near Seomyeon Station. Back in college I used to come here with friends often, so it's a pretty familiar Seomyeon galbijjim spot for me!
The generous portion of ribs served in a big brass bowl is great, but what I really like is that a staff member trims and preps the ribs right at the table so they're easy to eat.
This time we ordered the signature yangpuni galbijjim along with seafood potato pancake. Here's my honest review of revisiting Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch after a long time!

Where is Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch, and where do you park?
Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch is an easy walk from Seomyeon Station, so it's convenient by public transit. It's right in the heart of Seomyeon, so the route worked well for us as a dinner stop during our Seomyeon date.
If you're driving, there's no dedicated lot, so you'll need to use nearby paid parking. There's no parking fee support either, so if you're bringing a car, I'd recommend checking nearby lot locations and rates beforehand.

What the restaurant looks like, and how to beat the queue
The interior of Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch is kept clean overall, and the tables are spaced comfortably enough for a pleasant meal. It's a long-running Seomyeon galbijjim spot, but the clean interior made it comfortable for both a meal with friends and a date.
How long is the wait at Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch?
We visited around 6:40pm on a weekday and got seated right away with no wait. That said, this place is popular enough in Seomyeon that waits can form during evening or weekend peak hours — in fact, even on the weekday we visited, people started lining up around 7pm.
There's a Table-Ring kiosk out front where you can register for a wait as soon as you arrive. If you're visiting on a weekend or during dinner rush, I'd recommend going a little early, or checking whether reservations are possible beforehand if you'd rather not wait at all.

Menu prices and side dishes at Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch
The menu board is centered on the signature yangpuni galbijjim, with a good variety of add-on noodles and side dishes too. Here's what we ordered and the prices.
- Yangpuni galbijjim, 2 servings (₩14,000 per serving)
- Seafood potato pancake ₩10,000
- Steamed egg ₩3,000
- Ramen noodle add-on ₩2,500
- Makgeolli ₩5,000
Between the two of us, adding the seafood potato pancake and steamed egg to the galbijjim made for a surprisingly hearty spread. There are plenty of noodle add-ons and toppings you can throw into the galbijjim as you go, so you can customize it to your taste partway through. If you're after spicy braised ribs for dinner in Seomyeon, it's easy to tailor the order to your group size and preferences.

What banchan comes with the galbijjim at Sinchon Yangpuni?
The default spread includes soup, acorn jelly, corn kernels, and pickled onion with sauce. The warm soup was a light way to start before diving into the galbijjim, and it felt soft and soothing on the stomach.
The acorn jelly had a chewy yet soft texture paired nicely with a savory sauce — a real treat. The corn kernels also matched well with the sauce on top; I liked it enough to refill several times! The pickled onion was great to pair bite by bite with the spicy galbijjim, its tanginess cleansing the palate. Overall, the banchan lineup pairs well with the galbijjim.
Honest taste test: yangpuni galbijjim and seafood potato pancake

The Seomyeon galbijjim at Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch comes in a large brass bowl piled generously with meat, topped with a heap of crunchy bean sprouts and scallion shreds — it looks hearty the moment it hits the table.
A staff member trims the ribs into bite-sized pieces right at the table. They separate the bone from the meat and cut it into manageable sizes, so you can dig right in without doing any of the work yourself — which made me glad we came here for our date.

By the way, I cut the perilla leaves with scissors and added them on top myself!
The meat is braised long enough that it's tender and falls easily off the bone. The sauce is fully soaked in, so the first taste is spicy, with a lingering sweetness and savoriness following behind. Eating the sauce-coated ribs together with the crunchy bean sprouts and scallion shreds adds extra texture — it's a combination that keeps you reaching back for more.

The seafood potato pancake we also ordered isn't made from grated potato — it's thinly julienned potato pan-fried instead. It's a fairly large size, with a golden, crispy exterior and a moist interior, and the more you chew, the more the potato's nutty flavor comes through. Bits of seafood mixed in kept the texture from getting monotonous.

One bite of the freshly made seafood potato pancake and I naturally started craving makgeolli. We ended up ordering a bottle right away to go with it.
It's delicious just dipped in the pancake's own sauce, but personally I'd recommend dipping it into the yangpuni galbijjim sauce instead. The crispy pancake soaks up the spicy, savory galbijjim sauce, adding a sweet-salty-spicy layer of flavor. If you order both the galbijjim and the seafood potato pancake, definitely try this combo at least once.
Dipping tips and adding ramen noodles to the galbijjim

Is there a best way to eat galbijjim in Seomyeon?
Following the tips posted at the table, you can enjoy the yangpuni galbijjim in a few different ways! First, pile the tender braised ribs, crunchy bean sprouts, and scallion shreds generously onto a fragrant perilla leaf. Add a little sauce and some pickled onion, then wrap it all up and eat it in one bite.

The perilla leaf's fragrance adds to the deep, spicy rib sauce, while the bean sprouts and pickled onion give a crunchy bite — the flavor and texture are far richer than eating the meat alone. The pickled onion's tang paired especially well with the spicy sauce, a real highlight.

After working through most of the galbijjim, you can finish off with ramen noodles or fried rice depending on your taste. Adding soft steamed egg or other toppings partway through also lets you adjust the spice level while making the meal even more filling.
