It was finally a Friday off haha — you know how when you meet someone you like after a long time, you completely lose track of time talking. This was one of those days, meeting a dear friend for lunch after ages, so I went looking for a café that would be comfortable for sitting and chatting for a while and also had good desserts. That's how I ended up at BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch. Bottom line first: the space was spacious and the bakery selection was so varied that it turned out to be a really nice spot for a small gathering.

A big bakery café in Yeongdeungpo that is easy to talk in

The moment I walked into BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch, what I liked was that the space was bigger than I expected! Plenty of tables and a roomy layout meant that even with a decent crowd, it didn't feel cramped or too loud. It was comfortable to sit and chat with a friend I hadn't seen in a while.

Above all, the bread selection was genuinely varied. From the signature salt bread to financiers, egg tarts, and other baked goods and desserts — bread lovers would probably take forever to choose haha.

Fig tart with in-season figs and pistachio cream

The first dessert we picked was the fig tart. It's shaped like a small tart, similar to an egg tart mold, topped with in-season figs, with pistachio cream filling inside.

The sweetness of the figs paired with the mellow sweetness of the pistachio turned out to work better together than I expected. It wasn't just plain sweet — I liked that you could also enjoy the flavor of seasonal fruit alongside it. If you like figs, it's worth trying while it's still in season — we're at the tail end now, so seasonal fruit is something to enjoy while you can!

Peach wakppu financier: crack it open with the gloves

The most fun item that day was the peach wakppu financier! The outside of the financier is coated in white chocolate, styled after the trendy wakppu (crack-and-eat dessert) that you break apart by hand — and it was so cute that they gave us disposable gloves to crack it open ourselves. Of course, us ajumma types ate it politely with a knife and fork haha.

Once you crack the white chocolate shell, a whole preserved peach sits inside along with the financier, so it had more presence than I expected. The sweetness of the white chocolate, the fresh tartness of the peach, and the texture of the financier all come together at once, giving it a different kind of fun than a typical baked good. Both the look and the way you eat it were memorable.

Latte and matcha latte at BYWAY BAKERS: surprisingly big cups

For drinks we ordered a latte and a matcha latte, and when they arrived we both went, "whoa, that's huge!" They came generously filled in large glasses, and given the price, the portion was satisfying — and it wasn't just about quantity, the drink quality was solid too. Bakery cafés sometimes disappoint on drinks compared to bread, but this time the desserts and drinks were equally enjoyable together.

Looking for a group café near Yeongdeungpogu Office Station?

I want to recommend BYWAY BAKERS as a Yeongdeungpogu Office Station café go-to not because of any single standout dessert, but because the overall balance was good. It's close to the station, the space is spacious, the bakery options are plentiful, and the drinks are generous — great to use as a spot for meeting friends or a small gathering.

It especially suited a day like this, when I wanted to sit without watching the clock, chat with someone I hadn't seen in a while, and enjoy dessert too. The fig tart and the peach wakppu financier we had each had a different charm, and I was glad we ordered both.
