Bangi-dong bar in Seoul with whole steamed squid: Wareureu Mansion

In short

Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch (와르르맨숀 방이점) is a Korean pub in Bangi-dong, Songpa, Seoul, an 8-minute walk from Jamsil Station Exit 10 and up on the second floor of Bangi Food Alley. On a rainy weekday evening at a window seat, Wareureu Mansion's new dish Donghae choco ojingeo tongjjim (whole steamed squid) at 32,900 won and a melon plate at 13,900 won came with minari and chojang dipping sauce, the squid tender and the innards rich. With partitioned booths as well as a wide open hall, Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch suits both a Jamsil date night and a group dinner.

What kind of bar is Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch?

Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch is a Korean-style pub bar in Bangi Food Alley, open from daytime drinking all the way into the late-night hours. With a wide range of highballs and side dishes and a spacious layout, I'd summarize it as a great-vibe Jamsil date spot.

So let's get into the detailed review.

Finding the second-floor entrance in Bangi Food Alley

Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch has two entrances, so I went in through whichever was closer. Being in Bangi Food Alley, the location is great too.

Once you head up to the second floor, the entrance already has a classy, romantic feel.

Partitioned booths, window seats and the interior mood

Private partitioned seating at Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch

One reason I'd recommend this a bit more for a private Jamsil date course is that there are partitioned spaces, which give off a strong romantic feel.

Wide open hall seating good for group dinners

Or there's also a wide, open space, which works well for a group dinner.

Window seat on a rainy day

It was raining that day, so I deliberately picked a window seat for the atmosphere.

The menu and what we ordered

One reason it's well known as a Korean-style pub bar is that the menu is genuinely diverse, and fresh new dishes are launched too.

Menu page listing various side dishes

Everything on the side-dish menu looked delicious, so after some deliberation, here's what we ordered.

  • Donghae Choco Ojingeo Tongjjim (whole braised octopus): ₩32,900
  • Melon: ₩13,900

I heard octopus is in season these days, so I ordered it craving that rich, melt-in-your-mouth whole braised octopus.

Complimentary macaroni and the melon plate

Macaroni salad served as the basic side dish

First, macaroni came out as the basic side dish, with mayonnaise, ham, and onion — a savory basic side that kept my chopsticks reaching for more.

A generous plate of melon

The melon was generous in portion too, and even one bite was very sweet.

How does the new whole steamed squid taste?

The braised octopus I'd been looking forward to! It came with refreshing minari (water dropwort) and a variety of sauces like chojang and sesame oil salt that paired really well with it.

Close-up of the whole braised octopus sprinkled with sesame seeds

Looking closely, sesame seeds were sprinkled on top of the octopus, and it was a whole braise packed with rich, melt-in-your-mouth innards. Steamed whole, it caught the eye visually from the start. Maybe because of the word 'Donghae' (East Sea) in the name, it made me picture octopus freshly caught from the ocean.

Braised octopus served with minari and onion

I never expected the refreshing minari and onion to pair this well with the braised octopus.

Cross-section of the sliced braised octopus

The staff kindly and thoroughly explained how to eat it, so I removed the octopus's core first and cut it into cross-sections to try — looking closely at the cut surface, the rich, nutty innards were outstanding. Best of all, the texture wasn't chewy or tough.

The soft octopus leg portion

The octopus legs were soft and not tough either, making them perfect as a drinking snack. Nice and chewy in a good way — the more you chewed, the more that distinctive octopus cleanness and nuttiness came through.

Is Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch worth a weekday evening visit?

Drinks and side dishes on the window table

Another cheers for a hard day's work. We deliberately visited late on a weekday evening to avoid the weekend or peak hours, but customers kept coming in anyway.

The new Donghae Choco Ojingeo Tongjjim I ordered with high expectations this time! A dish whose name alone sparked curiosity, and the rich, melt-in-your-mouth innards of the plump octopus were outstanding — I already want to order this again on my next visit.

From the moment I walked in, instead of a chaotic, rigid atmosphere, the lighting and interior gave off such a romantic vibe that I found myself wanting to invite friends along, something I hadn't felt in a while at a bar. It seems great for chatting comfortably with friends or as a Jamsil date course with a partner.

The space is roomy, the tables are well spaced apart, and there are private partitioned seats, so I'd recommend it to anyone looking for that kind of space.

If you're in Bangi Food Alley looking for something different or a good Bangi-dong bar, I'd recommend Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch for its romantic atmosphere and its variety of delicious side dishes ^^
