In short

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a 30-year buckwheat noodle restaurant in Deogyang-gu, Goyang. We tried bibim makguksu, buckwheat pancakes, and perilla-seed buckwheat kalguksu with a rich broth made without meat stock. A comforting choice for a warm, easy-on-the-stomach noodle meal.

Introduction to visiting Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu

When cool breezes start blowing in the mornings and evenings like they have lately, I naturally start craving warm, comforting food. After so many rich meals out amid a busy routine, my stomach often feels heavy, so I drove to Goyang in search of a filling meal that would not weigh me down. I had heard of a buckwheat specialist that has soothed diners' stomachs from the same spot for 30 years and remained a local favorite, so I arrived excited. This is Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu (봉평고향막국수), a well-known Goyang kalguksu restaurant whose neat, home-style cooking wins over the whole family.

How Were the Spacious Dining Room and Quick Service?

When I arrived, I found that the restaurant occupied an entire standalone building, so it was quite substantial in size. Inside, the dining room was spacious and pleasant, with well over 20 tables for four. Even after the lunch rush, it was packed with diners, which really showed the popularity built over 30 years. Despite the crowd, our food came out promptly after ordering, the turnover was quick, and every staff member was kind, making the whole visit comfortable.

From Bibim Makguksu to Perilla-Seed Buckwheat Kalguksu

A full spread of ordered buckwheat dishes

We ordered bibim makguksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles), perilla-seed buckwheat kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), and buckwheat pancakes.

Sweet-Tangy Bibim Makguksu

The house-made sauce, blended with fruits and vegetables including apple, pear, radish, and onion, had a wonderfully natural sweetness and gentle spice rather than an artificial taste. It soaked beautifully into the freshly made buckwheat noodles, and adding the cold broth brought a soft, savory flavor that even older diners would enjoy. Those little dark flecks throughout the noodles made the high buckwheat content clear.

Mild and Clean-Tasting Buckwheat Pancakes

Every table seemed to be ordering them, so we had to try them too. Two large, thin pancakes arrived, making for a very generous serving. They were not greasy, and the more I chewed, the more the distinctive nutty buckwheat flavor filled my mouth. They never became cloying and showed off the essence of clean-tasting food. Roll up a thin pancake and dip it in soy sauce!

Deep Perilla-Seed Buckwheat Kalguksu Without Meat Stock

One taste of the thick, milky broth made me exclaim in admiration. It was remarkable that perilla seeds and buckwheat alone, without any meat stock, could create such a deep, rich nuttiness. The chewy buckwheat noodles, made from dough in-house, were easy to digest and left my stomach feeling genuinely comfortable afterward. It also comes with potato ong-simi (chewy potato dumplings). A place where you can enjoy delicious buckwheat dishes without going all the way to Gangwon-do! This was Goyang kalguksu at its finest, with a wholesome, deep flavor.

The yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) served as a basic side was mild and pleasantly tangy, pairing beautifully with the kalguksu. The makguksu was certainly delicious too, but this meal was when I discovered the appeal of buckwheat kalguksu.

Final Thoughts on a Comforting Buckwheat Meal
