In short
Boulangerie Copain is a European-style neighborhood bakery at 115 Huiujeong-ro, 1st floor, in Mapo-gu, Seoul, on a side street near Mangwon Hangang Park. On an evening visit, the writer took home angbutter (red bean and butter bread), a garlic cheese ball, a basil sandwich and a campagne loaf sliced at the counter, and finished the butter-loaded angbutter on the spot. Mangwon-dong has plenty of great restaurants, but to me it's always been the neighborhood that smells like fresh bread 🥐🥨🍞 Wandering the alleys, then walking over to Mangwon Market or Mangwon Hangang Park, makes it a perfect spot for a bakery tour haha.
This time I went back to a Mangwon bakery I'd visited once before and loved: Boulangerie Copain (블랑제리코팡). This place is more than just a neighborhood bakery — it's been famous for a while now, ever since it was featured on SBS's Baking Master (생활의 달인) for its baguette and croissant.
Where is Boulangerie Copain, and what is the bakery like inside?
Boulangerie Copain sits on the 1st floor at 115 Huiujeong-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, in an alley very close to Mangwon Hangang Park. It's open from 10:00 to 22:00. There's a sign that immediately catches your eye. Bread! 🍞
It doesn't have the flashy, oversized bakery vibe — instead it blends naturally into the alleys of Mangwon-dong as a small European-style bakery. Honestly, this kind of place suits Mangwon-dong so much better. Set among the old alleys and tree-lined streets, the bakery glows warmly, and the atmosphere was really nice.
Up close you can see it says BOULANGERIE COPAIN. The name 'Copain' along with the exterior gives off a clear European bakery identity. And walking past, you can see the bread displayed inside, which makes it hard to just walk on by (bread-lover's testimony).

Once you step inside, the baking area is right there in view.
Rather than feeling like a fancily decorated café, it had a strong actual-bakery feel — the equipment and workspace visible, and the baking area sitting close to the sales area, which somehow builds trust. These days most bakery cafés are done up so prettily, so a place that focuses on the bread itself naturally raises your expectations 🥹
Is there still bread left in the evening at Boulangerie Copain?
Boulangerie Copain was confirmed to have been featured in 2018 on SBS's Baking Master for its baguette and croissant, and that TV appearance is still one of the main things people mention about this place. That's why it comes up so often in conversations about Mangwon-dong bakery-hopping. I visited in the evening, so a lot of the bread had already sold out, but there was still a small amount left!

When I visited, everything from basic European breads like baguette and croissant to meal breads, pastries, and sandwiches was displayed in variety.

From basics like baguette, campagne, croissant, and brioche to all kinds of variations, everything was evenly stocked, which gave it a real artisan bakery feel.

The baguette, Boulangerie Copain's signature bread
And the thing you really have to pay attention to at Boulangerie Copain is, of course, the baguette. There's even separate signage about the baguette in-store — it's that clearly the identity of this place. Boulangerie Copain's baguette is often praised for its crispy exterior and chewy or moist interior, and apparently there are plenty of regulars who come specifically to buy the baguette itself.
If you're a baguette fan, it'd be fun to compare this one to the baguettes at your typical neighborhood bakery! Rather than just eating it as a snack, it seems like the kind of style that would pair really well as a meal bread with good olive oil, butter, or cheese.
Which breads can be sliced at the counter?

There was also separate signage about which items can be cut. For select products like the baguette, chocolate baguette, campagne, and basil crunch, you can ask staff to slice it before it's packed. It's convenient for eating right away at home, and also great if you're sharing with several people. Especially with something like a whole baguette — cutting it yourself at home is kind of a hassle, right? This kind of service was really practical, haha.
The breads picked for evening takeout
Everything looked delicious, but of course I grabbed my personal favorite first — the angbutter (red bean butter bread) 🫶🏻

The garlic cheese ball looked packed with cream inside, so I picked that up too without a second thought..!

Besides the bakery items, there was also pudding and various sauces that would go well with the baguette. Everything looked so good, ugh 🫠

The little details in the shop — like the speaker or the clock decorating the space — might look ordinary at a glance, but together they build the place's particular atmosphere. It doesn't feel like a shop just piled high with bread; it feels like a Mangwon bakery with its own character.
Oh, and you can buy coffee here too 👍

Tasting the angbutter, basil sandwich and campagne at home
Ta-da. Unboxing time as soon as I got home (?!)
The angbutter I was most looking forward to was seriously thick, big, soft, and melty… Most of all, it was loaded generously with red bean and butter, no skimping at all, so I finished it in one sitting 🫣

The basil sandwich also had a generous, satisfying amount of filling. You could totally eat it as a meal!!

The campagne came already cut, and even a single slice was this big — see how it's about the size of my palm? I toasted mine in the air fryer and spread jam on it. It was so nutty and delicious, ugh. The portion was so generous I could've lived off just this for a while..
⭐ My overall verdict on Boulangerie Copain
There's a reason I love these old, well-known bakeries. These days there are so many pretty, flashy bakeries around, but in the end, the places I keep going back to are the ones that nail the basics. In that sense, Boulangerie Copain definitely has its own identity.
The baguette and croissant featured on SBS's Baking Master, the wide variety of European-style bakery items, and the distinct alley atmosphere of Mangwon-dong — all of it comes together. If you're planning to visit Mangwon Market or Mangwon Hangang Park, it's a great spot to pick up some bread on the way, and if you're doing a Mangwon-dong bakery tour, definitely add it to your list 👍
Next time I visit, I want to properly try the signature items — the plain baguette and croissant — and try more of the sandwich menu too!
