Dongmyeong-dong Gwangju meat restaurant, 96-hour galbi: Ju Myeongdang
In short
Ju Myeongdang is a fusion Korean restaurant and bar on the second floor of a building on the main street of Dongmyeong-dong in Dong-gu, Gwangju. On this second visit the halibut for the Myeongdang gujeolpan (nine-section platter) had sold out, so the order went to the Myeongdang Imo Babsang set at 49,000 won, which arrived as one full table of char siu bossam, yukjeon (pan-fried beef), 96-hour aged straw-fire seasoned galbi, seasonal bibimbap, aged kimchi stew and handmade bibim noodles. Book ahead or arrive at opening if you want the gujeolpan at Ju Myeongdang, but the Imo Babsang set alone was worth the return trip.

Doesn't the cool evening breeze these days make you want good food, a drink, and a nice long chat with friends? That's exactly why I went back to a hidden gem in Dongmyeong-dong that I completely fell for on my first visit!
It's the kind of place where you can enjoy perfectly executed fusion Korean bar food in a private room — a spot I'd already filed away on my personal 'favorite bars in Gwangju' list. The melt-in-your-mouth straw-fire grilled meat and the calm marble dining hall kept flashing through my mind, and I just couldn't resist going back. So here's my second deep-dive into Ju Myeongdang (주명당), the magnetic fusion Korean restaurant that guarantees a repeat visit once you've tried it!
Where Ju Myeongdang is and its opening hours
Ju Myeongdang is on the 2nd floor of 15-2 Jangdong-ro, Dong-gu, Gwangju, right in the heart of the Dongmyeong-dong main street. It's open daily from 11:30 to 23:30 (last order 23:00), with no break time, so day drinking is welcome too.
When it comes to Gwangju's hottest neighborhoods, Dongmyeong-dong is definitely the place. Among all the hotspots there, Ju Myeongdang sits right in the very center, making it incredibly easy to get to.
Walking down the main street, the warm, glamorous lighting filling the entire second floor catches your eye from a distance. Thanks to the striking lights and the large sign, even first-timers or people with a poor sense of direction can spot it instantly without needing a map app.

Ju Myeongdang seating, from window tables to private rooms
The second floor of Ju Myeongdang has window seats, group tables, and private individual rooms. The layout works for dates, company dinners, or birthday parties alike.
Once you step inside, you'll find seating perfectly set up for whatever mood or gathering you have in mind. There are cozy window seats overlooking Dongmyeong-dong's lively night view for an open, breezy feeling,
spacious group tables where a big crowd of friends can gather and have a rowdy good time,
and private individual rooms where you can have a deep, intimate conversation without worrying about anyone around you at all. Whether it's a date, a company dinner, or a birthday party, it's a versatile space that hits the mark every time — I find myself happily debating where to sit each time I come.

Ju Myeongdang menu prices: Imo Babsang set at 49,000 won
Ju Myeongdang's signature sets, the Myeongdang Imo Babsang and Samchon Suljang, are both ₩49,000 for 2–3 people, while the Myeongdang Gujeolpan with Korean beef and sashimi is ₩59,000. Sides run from around ₩7,000 to the mid-₩10,000s, and Hanmac draft beer is ₩4,000.
Honestly, once you see the prices for the quality you get here, you'll be shocked. The signature sets — Myeongdang Imo Babsang and Samchon Suljang — are massive enough to fill 2–3 people completely, yet each is just ₩49,000. The premium Myeongdang Gujeolpan, topped with top-grade Korean beef and sashimi, is ₩59,000, which is amazing value for the quality. The side dishes are great too — from the hearty, upscale snow sweet potato cheese potato pancake (₩16,000), to the handmade naengmyeon (cold noodles, ₩7,000) that's perfect for cleansing your palate after meat, to the filling haejang ramyeon (hangover ramyeon, ₩8,900) — all priced very reasonably from ₩7,000 to the mid-₩10,000s.
And a cold, refreshing Hanmac draft beer to go with all this? Just ₩4,000! From the main spread to the sides to the drinks, it's honestly a heaven for drinkers who don't want to worry about their wallet 💸💖

Parking in Dongmyeong-dong: 1 hour free at the ACC lot
Ju Myeongdang offers 1 hour of free parking at the nearby National Asia Culture Center (ACC) parking lot. You can exit 24 hours a day, so there's no stress about parking even for a night out drinking.
Have you ever circled around Dongmyeong-dong stressed about parking? At Ju Myeongdang, you don't have to worry about that at all. If you use the National Asia Culture Center (ACC) parking lot right nearby, they cool-headedly cover 1 hour of free parking for you.
Park underground, come up to the first floor, and the Ju Myeongdang building is right there in front of you — the route is perfect. Since you can exit 24 hours a day, you can fully relax and enjoy your meal and drinks.

Gujeolpan halibut sold out, so why the Imo Babsang set?
On this visit, the Myeongdang Gujeolpan I had my eye on couldn't be ordered because the halibut, the main sashimi ingredient, had sold out. Since the restaurant only uses same-day ingredients, booking ahead or arriving right at opening is essential if you want gujeolpan.
At Ju Myeongdang, standing in front of the kiosk always puts you in a happy dilemma over the perfect 'big three' signature menu items. There's the visually stunning Myeongdang Gujeolpan, which artfully combines fresh land and sea ingredients on one plate; the Samchon Suljang, the best-value meat platter; and the Myeongdang Imo Babsang, the main highlight I went all out on today.

For this visit, I had actually set my sights on conquering the gujeolpan, topped with fresh same-day-butchered raw meat, chewy halibut, and salmon. But since this place is such a hotspot, by the time I arrived the main sashimi ingredient — halibut — was completely sold out, and I had to give up, fighting back tears. Because they insist on using only high-quality same-day ingredients, if you arrive late without a reservation, you might miss out on gujeolpan just like I did. If you're set on gujeolpan, make sure to book ahead or arrive right at opening!
What comes with the Myeongdang Imo Babsang set
The Myeongdang Imo Babsang comes on a bamboo tray with three kinds of meat, wrapping vegetables and pickles, plus seasonal bibimbap, aged kimchi stew, and handmade bibim noodles. The white marble table was completely covered — more than full.
Take a look at this insane overhead shot I took myself 😭 That's the majesty of the Myeongdang Imo Babsang, so full it practically bends the legs of the large, luxurious white marble table! Right in the center sits a massive bamboo tray piled high with three kinds of meat and fresh wrapping vegetables and pickles. Below that: colorful, vibrant seasonal bibimbap, a bright red aged kimchi stew that stirs your appetite, and neatly plated handmade bibim noodles!
And when you add two glasses of Hanmac draft beer with soft, fluffy foam on either side? It's an overwhelmingly photogenic spread you simply can't resist posting to your Instagram story.
Char siu bossam and yukjeon (pan-fried beef)
The char siu bossam grabs your attention immediately with its caramel-brown, glossy coating. It's made with pork belly aged for a whopping 72 hours in gochujang and aged pork belly separately, and the moment you pop a thick slice in your mouth, it falls apart like cotton candy. The savory fat and sweet umami spread through your mouth and it truly melts away.
On the right side of the big bamboo tray sits the golden, generous yukjeon (pan-fried beef with egg batter) — thin, tender beef coated in savory egg wash and fried until golden brown. It's clean and nutty with zero gamey taste — outstanding.

96-hour aged straw-fire seasoned galbi
Ju Myeongdang's pride and joy: the 96-hour aged straw-fire seasoned galbi (ribs)! Its deep, glossy color and slightly charred edges visually radiate that straw-fire aroma. Every bite bursts with salty-sweet special sauce and juicy meat, and the deep straw-smoke fragrance that hits your nose creates a perfect harmony — truly the number one reason you'll keep reaching for more rice and more drinks.

Why does the meat here melt in your mouth so uniquely well? Reading the menu closely, the secret is 'time and care.' As the menu proudly states, 'The fire is perfected in Damyang, the flavor is perfected at Ju Myeongdang' — every piece of meat isn't just casually grilled, but infused with a strong smoky aroma using rice straw brought directly from Damyang. On top of that, it goes through a careful 96-hour aging process, giving it an incredible texture where the outside carries that alive, smoky char while the inside bursts with juice. The owner's genuine passion for meat is proven the moment it hits your tongue.
Seasonal bibimbap
In a large black stone bowl, colorful seasoned vegetables are neatly arranged around the edge, with a round fried egg dotted with black sesame sitting right in the center — a true visual masterpiece! Mix it all together with the big wooden spoon and take a bite: the crisp fresh vegetables and the spicy-sweet gochujang sauce blend beautifully together, making it the perfect dish to fill you up before diving into the meat.

Handmade bibim noodles and aged kimchi stew
The handmade bibim noodles come coated in a spicy-tangy-sweet special sauce that clings perfectly to the noodles, instantly reviving your appetite just by slurping them plain. But the real joy is topping a piece of the straw-fire galbi or char siu bossam onto the noodles and rolling them together — a truly incredible combo you'd hate to share.
The aged kimchi stew bubbles away in a tiny black stone pot with a bright red broth, enoki mushrooms, and aged kimchi — mouthwatering just to look at! Take one spoonful of the deep, richly simmered broth and you'll let out an instinctive 'ahh~' as the spicy, tangy umami washes away the greasiness of the meat from your core. It's the kind of magnetic hangover-cure-meets-side-dish stew that makes you immediately shout for another bottle of soju!
Second visit verdict on Ju Myeongdang
Ju Myeongdang, a real hotspot in Dongmyeong-dong, Gwangju! With its open window views, a spacious hall gleaming with luxurious white marble, and private rooms where you can have an intimate, undisturbed conversation, it's about as perfect as it gets for a date or a gathering.
After being blown away on my first visit, this second visit sealed the deal — Ju Myeongdang is officially my favorite go-to spot. Tonight, if you need the healing of straw-fire-scented meat and a clinking glass of drinks with your closest friends or the person you love, in a place with great atmosphere, don't overthink it — just head straight to Ju Myeongdang in Dongmyeong-dong. I recommend it with 2000% confidence.
