This is my family's real, tried-and-true go-to spot — we've been dozens of times. Summer gets so packed you sometimes have to wait, but honestly nothing beats their naengmyeon (cold noodles), so we keep coming back. Paid with my own money, a hundred times over!!

"Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch" — I think it used to be called Iseol Hamheung Naengmyeon, must have changed! Plenty of parking, so it's great for group outings or family meals.

The signature dishes are Hamheung naengmyeon (mul naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon, hoe naengmyeon), and Seoul old-style bulgogi is also a signature — the subtle smoky flavor and sweet sauce please everyone! I've had this before with my own money too and it was delicious haha.

There's also wang galbitang (short rib soup), nakji galbitang (octopus and short rib soup), wang galbi-jjim (braised short ribs), ganjaebi hoe-muchim (spicy seasoned skate) and house-made mandu-guk (dumpling soup), among other dishes. There's a lot here that's good for lunch.

Meat broth and side dishes set before the meal
Generous side dishes served with naengmyeon and galbitang

Before the meal they give you meat broth and set out the side dishes. We ordered naengmyeon and galbitang together so the side dishes came out even more generously.

Grandma's number-one pick is the bibim naengmyeon,,, Grandma's palate is really picky and there aren't many places she calls delicious, but if you suggest coming here for bibim naengmyeon, she says yes right away lol

Close-up of chewy Hamheung naengmyeon noodles

The noodles are chewy and the broth has great umami, so delicious,, I mostly had the mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) and it's refreshingly cool too.

Wang galbitang with large short ribs

Usually when we go out as a family we all just get naengmyeon (that's how good the noodles are here), but this time we mixed it up a bit. Wang galbitang! Just like the name says, the short ribs are huge and the portion is generous.

Broth and short ribs in wang galbitang

I tried a spoonful of the broth and it had a deep, good flavor. Perfect for a hangover I'd say. Mix in rice and it disappears in no time. The short ribs are chunky so it's a filling meal.

Lunch spread of bibim naengmyeon, wang galbitang and tteok-mandu-guk for three at Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch

I ordered the sagol tteok-mandu-guk, and the deep, rich bone broth came with rice cake and a full 4 king mandu inside,, we also ordered a separate plate of mandu lol but the mandu here is so good that even eating a lot of it, we finished everything.

Full table spread of bibim naengmyeon, galbitang and tteok-mandu-guk

They're all common Korean dishes you can find anywhere, but it's actually hard to find a place that does them all well. At Iseol Myeonok, clearly because the chef is a Korean cuisine master, every dish has the seasoning exactly right and the broth is delicious., truly good!! Great for a lunch that never fails.

A plate of king mandu packed full inside

Last but not least, the three of us finished off a whole plate of king mandu without leaving anything~! The mandu are really huge, watch out for bursting,, they're packed full inside with juicy broth and flavor when you bite in.

This is the 4.19-area spot my family has gone to for over ten years, Iseol Myeonok Suyu. If you're craving a hearty Korean meal, come check it out!
