Squid muchim and jjaglee-bap at a Seomyeon corkage-free BBQ: Gilchon

A corkage-free BBQ spot in Seomyeon — scouted ahead of the group dinner

I heard there was a new corkage-free BBQ place in Seomyeon, so I scouted it out before going with friends. With corkage-free spots, the drink or meat prices are usually a letdown somewhere, but here there was none of that — I left really satisfied. It seemed especially great for group gatherings.

It's a three-minute walk from Seomyeon Station. It's not right in the busy downtown strip, so it's quiet and clean.

₩29,500 for a rib platter, no table fee

The prices are already very reasonable. A rib platter is ₩29,500, and even with sides or rice added, the meal stays affordable. Cheap BBQ places usually charge a table fee no matter what, but Gilchon Sutbul Galbi had none of that.

We ordered a platter of marinated pork ribs, cheddar cheese and toast, steamed egg, squid muchim (spicy seasoned salad), kimchi jjigae (with jjaglee-bap, a rice mixed into the stew), and draft beer.

Group seating and a private room for parties

The hall had enough seating for at least 20 parties, and there was also a private room-like space for gatherings — I couldn't get a photo since it had guests in it, but it looked like it could hold 12 people or more. Overall it felt spacious and clean.

Side dishes: shrimp sesame oil sauce, baek-kimchi, and myeong-i wasabi

Every side dish was chosen specifically because it goes well with the meat. I especially loved the shrimp sesame oil sauce and the baek-kimchi (white, non-spicy kimchi), and the myeong-i wasabi (wild garlic leaf wasabi) had a cool, refreshing kick unlike regular wasabi, which seemed to pair well with both the fresh and marinated ribs.

How could I not order the Cass draft beer, 300cc for ₩1,900? It felt well cared for.

The charcoal was bijangtan (white charcoal), and it was set at just the right level, so flipping the meat often enough was all it took to grill it easily.

Bone-in pork belly-side marinated ribs, easy to grill

The meat quality was excellent, and thorough scoring meant the marinade had soaked in really well. Since it's from the bone-in pork belly area, the fat-to-lean ratio was perfect. Easy to grill and easy to cut, too.

Sweet-and-savory, moist and tender — dipping it in the accompanying meat sauce made the juiciness come through even more. It went great with all the side dishes on the table, and the pairing I liked best was the meat with wasabi.

Squid muchim, steamed egg, and cheddar toast — menu-only items

This is the squid muchim (spicy vinegared squid salad) that's not listed on the Naver Place menu but is on the restaurant's own menu. It's such good value that I highly recommend ordering it. The squid was chewy and really delicious.

You can't skip steamed egg when eating meat!

If you order the marinated ribs, I definitely recommend adding the cheddar cheese and toast. That sauce with the ribs, cheese, and bread combo is so good. It's also offered as a review event item, so I'd definitely recommend trying it.

Finishing with kimchi jjigae and jjaglee-bap

To finish, kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and jjaglee-bap. Jjaglee-bap can only be ordered if you order a jjigae, and I'd definitely recommend getting it instead of plain rice. The kimchi jjigae had an insane amount of meat in it — enough that I was glad I chose kimchi over doenjang stew. A whole head of kimchi goes into it, so it might be a bit spicy for those who can't handle heat — if you're spice-sensitive, it's worth asking them to leave out the chili.

Who should try Gilchon Sutbul Galbi in Seomyeon

The basic side dishes were clean and tasty, and combined with being corkage-free and having a spacious dining room, this felt like a BBQ restaurant that works well for family meals, friend gatherings, and office dinners alike.
