Chicken takeout in Gangbuk, Seoul: 10-minute wait at Gimssi Chicken

In short

Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch is a dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken bites) and fried chicken shop inside Suyu Market in Gangbuk, Seoul. On a Friday at around 5pm the takeout order took about a 10-minute wait: a medium mild dakgangjeong (9,000 won) and 8 drumsticks (12,000 won), 21,000 won in total, still crisp one to two hours later, with the writer's child asking again and again for drumsticks dipped in salt. Two menu items for the price of one whole chicken is the biggest reason to go.

Takeout dakgangjeong and drumsticks from Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch

Friday nights call for chicken and beer, that's just the truth. 🍗 I stopped by Suyu Market, a place I visit often, and this time I went to Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch, a dakgangjeong (sweet-spicy fried chicken bites) and fried chicken spot known for being a hidden gem inside the market.

Where is Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch, and when is it open?

Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch is at 29 Dobong-ro 71-gil, 1F, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, inside Suyu Market. It's open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, so it opens pretty early.

View of South Gate 1 entrance at Suyu Market

It's located inside Suyu Market. I went in through South Gate 1, shown in the photo, and looked around for Gimssi Chicken. Suyu Market is bigger than you'd expect, and there were plenty of visitors.

There are so many stalls that it's a great place for browsing the market and people-watching too. If you're directionally challenged like me, I'd recommend pulling up Naver Map while you walk.

How long is the wait on a Friday evening?

I visited around 5pm on a Friday, and there was a wait. I waited about 10 minutes before getting my takeout order. Quite a few people were waiting, but the staff seemed really fast on their hands.

How much food do you get for 21,000 won?

Since this was my first visit, I ordered the signature dakgangjeong in mild, medium size (₩9,000), plus 8 drumsticks (₩12,000), both to go. Getting to eat all the drumsticks I wanted had me genuinely excited.

It's surprising that you can get this much food these days for a price (₩21,000) that's less than a single whole chicken at most chicken shops — genuinely great value.

How spicy is the mild dakgangjeong, really?

I ordered the dakgangjeong mild, but for someone as spice-averse as me, it was a bit spicy. Still, it was a delicious kind of spicy.

The garlic flavor mixed with the sweetness for a sauce that was sweet, salty and savory all at once. The sauce clung to every piece, and even 1-2 hours after packing it up, the crispiness held.

The rice cakes were chewy too and blended really well with the sauce.

Picking up a dakgangjeong rice cake piece

I was so eager that I grabbed a rice cake with a piece of dakgangjeong and tried it myself before even giving my kid a bite. ^^

There was so much food we couldn't finish it in one sitting, so we portioned it out. That crispy bite with the sweet and spicy sauce — is there a better beer snack than this??

Why the 8 drumsticks worked so well for sharing with a child

The drumsticks weren't sauced, so they were even crispier.

Most other chicken shops rely on saltiness to make things taste good, but Gimssi Chicken wasn't salty at all.

And even without curry powder in the batter, there was zero off-smell. They seem to be using fresh chicken.

Inside of a plump fried drumstick

Also, the drumsticks were plump, so there was a lot of meat to eat.

Drumstick served alongside salt

My little one at home, who dips things in salt with their hand, happily dipped the drumstick in salt and kept eating.

Kids' taste buds are so honest, aren't they. Finished one and asked for another.

Next time I'd like to try the boneless fried chicken, and I'm planning to order the seasoned chicken too. Already looking forward to the next visit.
