Diced short ribs and jjagyechi with a friend and soju: Supsok Oki Jip

In short

Supsok Oki Jip Uijeongbu Station Main Branch is a short rib and premium galbi-sal (rib finger meat) restaurant in the restaurant alley near Uijeongbu Station, Gyeonggi. Two friends shared premium galbi-sal and diced short ribs with soju, then finished with jjagyechi (black bean noodles with cheese and egg) when they wanted some carbs. The cream soup side dish and beef radish soup rounded out a fully satisfying meal.

I was craving meat so badly last weekend that I went to Supsok Oki Jip near Uijeongbu Station. My friend said this was a place she'd really wanted to try. Here's my very satisfying meal review at Supsok Oki Jip :)

Supsok Oki Jip is right next to Kkangtong Dolgopchang, toward the new town side of Uijeongbu Station. You know the restaurant alley right by the station, right? These photos are the outside. From outside it really feels like a villa. True to its name (which means "house in the forest"), it really does feel like a house in the forest haha.

The inside is decorated in a similarly cozy, villa-like style as the outside. The space felt comfortable and really snug, which felt like Supsok Oki Jip's own charm! Going up the stairs, there was a separate dining space on the 2nd floor too.

Another thing I liked was that the restroom is inside the restaurant. It was convenient not having to step outside mid-meal to use it, and the restroom inside was kept clean too, so it was pleasant to use.

Cream soup as a side dish? The tray setting and beef radish soup

Individual tray setting with cream soup and basic side dishes

As soon as we sat down, they set up our trays with the basic side dishes, and Supsok Oki Jip is a bit different from other places — cream soup comes as a default side! I was so hungry, and having the soup to calm my stomach was great. They also gave us pickled mushrooms, stir-fried kimchi, gungchae (a leafy vegetable side dish), and a dipping sauce. Having everything set on individual trays per person felt really neat.

Beef radish soup served as a default side dish

They also give you beef radish soup by default, and once it starts boiling they tell you to crack a raw egg into it yourself haha. It's been a while since I had radish soup like this. It was seriously delicious too.

The menu we ordered and the prices

True to a specialty meat restaurant, the menu is fairly simple. Unlike other places that sell all kinds of different things, this one seemed proud of being meat-focused — if that makes sense?

  • ☑︎ Premium galbi-sal, 1 serving ₩16,000
  • ☑︎ Diced short ribs, 1 serving ₩23,000
  • ☑︎ Soju

That's what we ordered. You can add ₩10,000 here to switch to a set that comes with gopchang (beef intestine) hot pot and curry, but we skipped it since we had a second round planned!

They immediately put in the charcoal and gave us mushrooms, pineapple, and scallion pickle to grill alongside.

Ta-da... the top is the premium galbi-sal, and the bottom is the diced short ribs. Isn't the color seriously amazing? Even while taking photos I wanted to eat it so badly I thought I'd die haha;

Diced short ribs — diced to kimchi-cube size, so they cook fast

I grilled the diced short ribs first, and maybe because they're really diced to kimchi-cube size, the meat cooks fast haha. Cooked just right, it was tender to chew and I could really taste that distinct savory meat flavor. My friend and I kept muttering "wow, so good" over and over as we ate.

A glass of soju enjoyed alongside the meat

We dipped it thoroughly in the sauce they gave us, piled on other side dishes too, and then when we took a bite of radish soup, everything went down smoothly and the soju just kept flowing haha. Even without dipping into other sauces, the side dishes were seasoned so well that just topping the meat with them tasted great.

Eat the premium galbi-sal at this exact timing

Next was the premium galbi-sal. Rib finger meat gets a bit tough if you cook it too long. Eat it when it's cooked just right and it melts in your mouth. Personally I preferred the premium galbi-sal over the diced short ribs, but my friend said she liked the diced short ribs more.

It was so good we kept eating nonstop. Since we hadn't had any carbs, I felt a little bit of a gap, and I thought about ordering more meat, but instead I ordered one jjagyechi.

Finishing with jjagyechi — scallion kimchi is the unwritten rule

Isn't scallion kimchi the unwritten rule with jjagyechi? Luckily they gave us scallion kimchi too, so I piled it on generously. A combo of black bean noodles with cheese and egg can't possibly taste bad, but personally I think jjagyechi is even better made with the spicy Sacheon jjapaghetti — since this was the regular version, I felt it would have been even better with some spice!

Overall impressions after the visit

Before visiting, an acquaintance had raved about how delicious this place was, which made me curious, and after going I understood why. From the carefully prepared side dishes to everything else, it was all so delicious without a single miss. This is truly a great beef restaurant! Next time I definitely want to add the set and try the gopchang hot pot and curry too. Thanks for the meal again today ෆ
