Korean restaurant near Ulsan Central Hospital: Boksan Haejang

In short

Boksan Haejang Nam-gu Sinjeong Branch is a Korean restaurant in Nam-gu, Ulsan, in the building next to Ulsan Central Hospital on Munsu-ro, in the Gongeoptap area. For lunch the writer ordered yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef with rice) and Boksan haejangguk (hangover soup), finding the yukhoe portion generous and the radish broth clean and refreshing, while mungtigi (thick-cut raw beef) is only available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. With domestic ingredients and a full set of banchan, Boksan Haejang made for a satisfying lunch near the hospital.

Today I finally visited Boksan Haejang, a Gongeoptap-area restaurant I'd been so curious about because it's always packed whenever I pass by!!

They're open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 2:30pm, with last order at 2pm, and closed every Monday.

Where is Boksan Haejang Nam-gu Sinjeong Branch, and is there parking?

Boksan Haejang Nam-gu Sinjeong Branch is located at 476 Munsu-ro, Nam-gu, Ulsan, South Korea, right next to the building of Ulsan Central Hospital. Maybe that's why so many hospital staff show up at lunchtime.

Sounds like it's become known as a go-to spot near Ulsan Central Hospital~ There's parking for about 2-3 cars in front of the restaurant, and if that's full you'll need to park in a nearby alley, ㅠㅠ

I was wondering why the business hours were so short, but apparently they changed due to internal circumstances at the restaurant, ㅠㅠ

Luckily we got a parking spot right in front of the restaurant!! Now that we're parked, let's head inside. There's a step at the entrance so watch your feet~

What banchan comes with lunch at Boksan Haejang?

At Boksan Haejang, they bring out the basic banchan (side dishes) first after you order! I really love pickled onion but you usually can't get it unless you're at a BBQ place, so seeing it as a basic side dish made me so happy!!!!! (today's random fact,,,,,,,)

On the table they had salt, pepper, sancho (Japanese pepper), and perilla seeds ready, plus hair ties for anyone with long hair. Great attention to detail from the owner~

Mungtigi only on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday — plus baby chairs

There were more tables than I expected!! I wanted to try mungtigi too, but it's only available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, ㅠㅠㅠ So disappointing, but I guess it just means I need to come back><

Boksan Haejang Nam-gu Sinjeong Branch also has a baby chair ready!!

All the ingredients used in the menu are domestic, so you can trust what you're eating!! Apparently Boksan Haejang, a well-known restaurant in Nam-gu, Ulsan, works through a direct-trading system with its own affiliated businesses — Boksan Meat, Boksan Yukgwan, and Boksan Pork Cutlet — to serve generous portions at reasonable prices. No wonder everything is domestic yet the prices are so affordable~

Yukhoe bibimbap: how generous is the raw beef portion?

While I was looking around, our food arrived!!!! I'm obsessed with yukhoe bibimbap so I ordered that, and I was shocked at how much more yukhoe there was than I expected!! Before even tasting it, the meat looked so good quality that I got mixing it with high hopes!!! Oh, and if you order yukhoe bibimbap, you also get a small portion of haejangguk broth on the side!!!

My husband's order, Boksan haejangguk, also arrived. It came bubbling away in a stone pot, and the moment I smelled it I understood why this place has earned its reputation near Gongeoptap!!!!!!!

My yukhoe bibimbap, all mixed up and ready!!!! I took a bite right away, and the yukhoe seasoning seemed slightly sweetened, so the sweet flavor plus sesame oil aroma was amazing. And spooning up the haejangguk on the side made it pure heaven!!

Boksan haejangguk tastes like Gyeongsang-style beef and radish soup

Watching me eat, my husband thought I looked like I didn't have enough, so he scooped me a bowl of his own — and the big chunks of radish were so good, ㅠㅠㅠ Having radish in there made it so refreshingly cool!!!!!!! The flavor reminded me of Gyeongsang-do style beef radish soup!

There's also glass noodles inside, so it should keep you nice and full!!!!

After a few bites, my husband added sancho and perilla seeds and enjoyed a whole different flavor — he was eating it up so happily~

The yukhoe bibimbap had so much yukhoe packed in that I could scoop up a generous last bite full of yukhoe right to the end!!! So was it good, you ask?

Is Boksan Haejang worth a Gongeoptap lunch?

Yes, it was a perfect lunch. Not just the main dishes but even the basic banchan were so tasty that I feel like I ate really, really well!!! If you're looking for a lunch spot near Gongeoptap in Ulsan, definitely check out Boksan Haejang Nam-gu Sinjeong Branch!!!!!!!!!!

Coffee available to enjoy after the meal at Boksan Haejang

To finish, you can even have a cup of coffee — pure bliss!!!! Highly, highly recommend this as a great restaurant in Nam-gu, Ulsan!!!!
