On a day when it kept drizzling, I wanted something hot and filling for lunch, so I went to Boksan Haejang Nam-gu Sinjeong Branch — a haejangguk (hangover soup) and yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl) spot near Gongeop Tower in Ulsan. It's easy to get to since it's close to Gongeop Tower, and not just the haejangguk but the yukhoe bibimbap and yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef cold soup) are all generous with meat, so it worked well as a lunch spot near Gongeop Tower in Ulsan!
Where is Boksan Haejang Nam-gu Sinjeong Branch, and when is it open?
Boksan Haejang Nam-gu Sinjeong Branch is at 476 Munsu-ro, 1F, Nam-gu, Ulsan, South Korea, and it's open 11:00–14:30, closed Mondays. Parking is available, there are baby chairs, and seating is table-style.
For a while now they've apparently been running only lunch service. It's just a short window from 11am to 2:30pm, so keep that in mind before you visit!

Inside Boksan Haejang: atmosphere and parking
Since it's called a haejangguk place I expected a rough-and-ready vibe, but walking in, the atmosphere was better than I thought. It's decorated overall in wood tones, so it feels clean but warm at the same time.
Parking is available right in front of the restaurant 🚗 There's a parking area right outside, big enough for about 4 cars.

Boksan Haejang menu and prices
Boksan Haejang's signature dishes are haejangguk / yukhoe bibimbap / yukhoe mulhoe, but I noticed a lot of people ordering haejang kalguksu (hangover soup with knife-cut noodles) too! I went back and forth between the kalguksu and the haejangguk myself, and ended up going with the Boksan haejangguk.
- Large Boksan Haejangguk – ₩15,000
- Yukhoe Bibimbap – ₩12,000
I ordered two mains. Checking the origin labels, everything was domestic Korean! That gave me a lot of confidence in the ingredients from the start.

A simple set of side dishes came out: kkakdugi (radish kimchi), musaengchae (seasoned radish salad), and pickled onions. Crunchy, tangy sides — perfect for cleansing your palate between bites.

The dishes I ordered came out quickly. Since the menu isn't huge, food came out fast. Each dish arrived neatly plated on a tray, which made it easy to eat too.

Large Boksan haejangguk: how the broth tasted on a rainy day
Starting with the haejangguk! The Boksan haejangguk arrived bubbling hot, with a refreshing, spicy broth like a Gyeongsang-do style radish soup. Eating a hot bowl of soup with rice on a rainy day warmed me right up and felt really satisfying. It's not the usual bone-based haejangguk flavor — the clean, refreshing broth is what stood out about Boksan haejangguk.

The broth was great, but the solid ingredients were seriously generous too!! Plenty of vegetables like bean sprouts, radish, and green onion. In particular, there was more meat than I expected, so I kept fishing out more and more as I ate.

Yukhoe bibimbap: plenty of raw beef even in the regular size
The yukhoe bibimbap, generous with raw beef, is also worth recommending! It comes piled high with vegetables and yukhoe, topped with an egg yolk right in the center. I ordered the regular size but the amount of yukhoe was more than I expected. I figured next time I could splurge on the large size without any regrets haha.

If you order the yukhoe bibimbap, a bowl of broth comes free on the side. The broth paired really well with the bibimbap. Being able to enjoy soup without ordering it separately is a huge plus haha.

Break the yolk and mix it all together. The gochujang (chili paste) sauce was exactly to my taste too. Not too spicy, not too sweet, with just the right savory depth that paired well with the yukhoe.

Tender Korean beef yukhoe~ Eating it in one bite with the vegetables and rice was really delicious! Even from a single bite you could tell how fresh both the vegetables and the yukhoe were.
