Root magic straightening and side volume perm for curly hair: Juno

My hair had grown out pretty messily, so I finally made it to the salon after a while. I have severely curly hair, so I get magic straightening done every few months. This time, since I'd had a full magic setting about two months earlier, I decided to go with root magic straightening + side volume perm + hair clinic instead of redoing the whole head, to match my hair's current state.

The place I went to is Juno Hair Dongtan SRT Station Branch.

How to park and find the salon

If it's your first visit, the entrance to the parking lot can be a little confusing. You might mix it up with the entrance to the Dongtan Lotte Department Store parking lot, but just follow the pink guide line all the way in. Parking near the Building B retail section was easier for getting to the salon.

Follow the signs and you'll reach the Building B elevator — take it up to the 2nd floor.

Once you're on the 2nd floor, keep walking toward B201–B214 and you'll find the salon.

For first-timers, it might help to remember: pink guide line → Building B retail entrance → 2nd floor → B201–B214.

Spotless even before you walk in

One thing that stood out when I arrived at the entrance was that there's a separate hand-washing area just outside the salon door.

They said this space was added after COVID, when hygiene became more of a priority, and it even had hand wash and lotion set up, decorated as neatly as a high-end hotel.

There's also a simple price list posted at the entrance.

The waiting area has plush sofas, so even if you arrive a bit early for your appointment, you can wait comfortably.

Can you bring your kid? — the kids' area

Maybe because it's Dongtan, there was also a kids' area for moms who come in with their children.

It's made of glass so you can see inside clearly from outside, and it had books, toys, and even a TV for watching videos. When you bring a kid to the salon, you tend to worry about what they'll do while you're getting your hair done, so having a space like this would definitely help.

Taking a look inside the salon

In front of the counter, they were selling the products Juno Hair uses.

The shampoo I actually used that day was also good. My skin can be sensitive, so it's sometimes uncomfortable when salon products don't agree with me, but this time I had no trouble at all. In particular, my scalp felt cooling and refreshed during the shampoo.

While waiting, they also brought out snacks.

Behind the counter was an open kitchen, structured so you could see the snacks being prepared, which made the free treats feel more trustworthy to eat.

The seating area for heat treatments was also set up in an open layout.

A separate changing room was another surprise

Another thing that caught my eye was the changing room.

Most salons just have a spot to store your bag or coat, but here the space is curtained off so you can actually change clothes if needed. When you're getting magic straightening or a perm, you worry about chemicals getting on your clothes, so having a separate space like this would be handy.

The White Zone and Brown Zone

Further into the salon, a brick archway divides the space into a White Zone and a Brown Zone.

The White Zone feels bright and clean, while the Brown Zone, with its wood-toned interior, felt a bit calmer and cozier.

The shampoo room and spa room also had a dark wood tone, creating a quiet atmosphere that was good for relaxed treatment.

I also noticed the shampoo room had a steamer and steam towels ready.

There was also a separate space for a head spa, set up with massage chairs so you could relieve fatigue while getting your hair treated. Just looking at the facilities, it felt a bit different from a typical hair salon.

A consultation tailored to my hair

Now for the actual consultation.

Since I have severely curly hair, I get magic straightening regularly, and I'd had a full magic setting done about two months earlier. So this time, rather than redoing the whole head, I decided to straighten just the messily grown-out roots with root magic straightening, and add a clinic treatment for the ends that were damaged from perming. My designer was Yeondu.

Designer Yeondu recommended a side-swept fringe as a good match for my face shape. But since I'm a mom and don't like bangs getting in my face, she suggested a perm that adds volume on the side instead of a side fringe.

I also mentioned that a year ago at a different salon, the thin hair along my face line had almost completely burned off during a magic straightening treatment. That part hadn't fully recovered yet, so I was worried about it, but Designer Yeondu — who has curly hair herself — really understood what I was concerned about and paid extra attention to the damaged area during the treatment.

During the consultation, Designer Yeondu also showed me a book she'd made herself, organized by hairstyles that suit different face shapes, which was helpful for figuring out what style would work for me.

It also included an introduction to the products Juno Hair uses.

The prices I was curious about

At large salons, prices sometimes vary depending on the designer, so I checked the length surcharge based on Designer Yeondu specifically that day. Up to the collarbone line was ₩10,000, and past the collarbone was ₩20,000.

Starting the root straightening and side volume perm

First, they applied the root magic straightening solution and started smoothing out the curly regrowth. Since I still had some C-curl perm left from before and didn't want to waste it, I decided to keep as much of it as possible and just trim the ends. My hair is on the thicker side, so they lightened it overall to avoid it looking too heavy.

The side volume perm we'd discussed was done alongside the root magic straightening. While the heat treatment was processing, I flipped through the book from the consultation again.

Since it had recommended hairstyles by face shape, it seemed like something worth referencing for my next appointment too.

Comfortable even during the neutralizing step

One thing I personally loved about that day was the neutralizing process.

At some salons, they apply the neutralizer and just have you lie down in the shampoo room to wait, which I don't find comfortable — my neck gets uncomfortable that way. But here, they let me stay seated even during the neutralizing step and kept a close eye to make sure the solution wasn't dripping anywhere. They also brought snacks during the process and checked in to see if I was comfortable, which I appreciated.

Finishing with a hair clinic

Finally, they did the hair clinic.

For the clinic, they wrapped my hair in a warm steam towel, and the warmth made it quite relaxing too. When I touched my hair afterward, it felt noticeably softer than before the treatment.

After finishing the clinic, they blow-dried my wet hair. For the finishing touch, they used a Juno Hair essence product for a light styling.

Just root straightening, but it looks like a full magic setting

And finally, done!

This time I only did root magic straightening + side volume perm + layered cut, but seeing the finished look, it was surprising how much it resembled a full magic setting redo.

By keeping the existing C-curl perm and neatly straightening only the roots, the overall shape flowed together naturally.

Since my hair is on the thicker side, I didn't want it falling heavily, and the layered cut kept things light, so the ends looked natural too. Designer Yeondu suggested that next time, I could cut off the remaining C-curl ends and try a build perm, which she thought would look pretty. I'd like to try that style sometime.

Side volume held up even after getting home

Looking good at the salon matters, but what I was really curious about was how my hair would look once I got home and checked again. And I was happy that the side volume stayed full even after getting home.

Thanks to straightening only the curly roots, keeping the side volume, and preserving as much of the existing C-curl as possible, it didn't feel like a dramatic change — more like my hair was just naturally tidied up.

This time, instead of a full magic straightening, I went with root magic straightening + side volume perm + layered cut. I was happy that the existing C-curl was preserved while the curly roots were neatly straightened, and that the side volume stayed full even after getting home.
