Gyeongju dessert café for mango mochi that melted: Tareudang

Gyeongju was the last stop on our vacation! It isn't that far from Changwon, so I've been going to pensions with friends there since I was young. It's such a nice place with lots to see and eat, haha. Though honestly, all the food is the biggest reason, mwahaha. This time, while wondering what dessert to try in Hwangridan-gil, I went to get the super-hot fruit mochi at Tareudang :)

Tareudang location and hours

The address is 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, South Korea. Hours are 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, though it may close early when ingredients sell out.

Ooh, I found it easily after searching the map! I came on a whim, so I had no idea what was popular these days. Back in my day it was Hwangnam jjondeugi and ten-won bread, haha. Now they're everywhere~ (I still bought them, hehe.) Anyway, Tareudang was one of the Hwangridan-gil desserts I hurriedly found after digging around Instagram and blogs.

Almost every flavor was sold out, even on a weekday

This place is famous for queues too, but mwahaha, I'm such a lucky girl! It was so nice that there weren't many people because I came on a weekday. I can't believe it ㅠㅠ Haha, I'm so excited~ There was another famous fruit sando place across the street, but I love rice cakes, so Tareudang for me >< Though it would have been even better to buy both, right? Haha.

My happiness was short-lived—I was shocked.. I was deciding which flavor to get and asked just in case, and they said only mango and golden kiwi were left ㅠ Everyone gets there so early, huh? Ahh, I was happy for nothing. Still, better than not getting any at all~ They were sold out, but I'll introduce the flavors anyway, haha.

Giant fruit mochi prices and discounts

You get ₩500 off each fruit mochi when you buy four or more, so you might as well get at least four, right? Haha. Mango was the most expensive at ₩8,500. It seemed pricey, but then I remembered those tiny dubai chewy cookies cost about this much too, so maybe it isn't so bad. In person, these were seriously giant. You can't even compare them with regular glutinous-rice mochi!

A dessert worth buying as a gift

They also had egg tarts and cheesecake. Rather than the usual Gyeongju bread, bringing something like this back as a gift after a trip to Gyeongju would make people say you have great taste. They have gift boxes too—nice! I bought Gyeongju bread as well, by the way, mwahahaha. Somehow, it's the magical Hwangridan-gil dessert I end up buying every time I come.

An insulated bag is essential on hot days

They give you a free box and insulated bag when you write a photo review! Definitely do it if you're giving them as gifts—and even if you're eating them yourself ㅠㅠ I didn't because I was going home that day... but they melted, sob sob. An insulated bag is essential. Why didn't I write that review? Seriously, I need to reflect on myself.

Ta-da! I happily bought two mango and two golden kiwi ones, la-la-la. I stopped here first because I was worried they would sell out, then went around sightseeing... and ugh, they melted. I wondered if I should have bought them later, but when I looked on my way home, they were sold out and closed. It was late August, not quite a heat wave, but it was still so hot walking around that sweat was pouring down~ Thanks, my two girls, for coming along so nicely while Mom was buying dessert. Mom is kind of very serious about food... Now let's go buy yours, go go, haha.

Mango and golden kiwi mochi that were delicious even melted

I opened them as soon as I got home to eat them, but they had melted because I hadn't put them in an insulated bag ㅠㅠ I considered refrigerating them first, but people said they taste best the day you buy them, so I ate them right away. In other people's reviews, they look really pretty, soft, and properly mochi-like, which is a shame.. On hot days, an insulated bag really isn't optional—it's essential. Anyway, the cream was soft and there were big chunks of fruit inside, so Tareudang's fruit mochi was fun to eat. It wasn't overly sweet either, so it didn't get cloying~ Next time, I'll eat it properly. If you're visiting Gyeongju, I recommend it as a Hwangridan-gil dessert ♥
