Retro Korean BBQ in Yeonsinnae, Seoul: galbisal and LA kkotgalbi
In short
Golmokjip Galbisal Yeonsinnae Main Branch is a charcoal beef restaurant in an alley by Exit 6 of Yeonsinnae Station in Eunpyeong, Seoul. After a move, the writer came for dinner with her mother and her fiancé and ordered one 500g platter of galbisal (beef rib meat) and one 600g platter of LA kkotgalbi (LA-style marinated flower ribs), eating amid 1980s-90s retro decor. The three had different favorites, but the writer's mother, who is fussy about beef, said they had come to the right place.

We spent the whole weekend moving into our newlywed home, exhausted from unpacking and sorting boxes, and by the time we looked up it was already late afternoon and we were starving. My fiancé and I were craving meat for dinner, so we invited my mom along and looked up a barbecue restaurant near Yeonsinnae. That's how we ended up at Golmokjip Galbisal Yeonsinnae Main Branch.
The best part was that my mom came along that day. She's honestly pretty picky about meat and will let you know right away if it's not good — but this time, after a few bites, she said, "This meat is delicious. You found a good place." I was secretly so proud, haha. 😊
My fiancé and I both enjoyed the galbisal, and my mom especially loved the LA kkotgalbi. Let me walk you through it :)

Walk into the alley off the Yeonsinnae Rodeo Street and you'll come across Golmokjip Galbisal — true to its name (golmok means "alley" in Korean), it sits tucked away in a back street, which gave it a warm, nostalgic feel from the start. It's an easy walk from Exit 6 of Yeonsinnae Station, so it's a great choice even without a car. Barbecue restaurants always look more atmospheric once the lights come on in the evening.
Inside: 1980s-90s retro decor

Walking in, the vibe of the place was more fun than I expected — it's decorated in a full 80s-90s retro style. From idol posters I remember seeing as a kid to little props that bring back that old-school feel, there was plenty to look at.
My mom especially loves this kind of nostalgic vibe, so she was checking everything out the moment we walked in. It felt less like coming for dinner and more like a little trip down memory lane. 🤭 I noticed other reviews also mention the retro props and 80s-90s decor as one of the standout features here.
Menu and ordering: galbisal platter and LA kkotgalbi platter

Each table has its own ordering tablet, so you can browse the menu and order at your own pace. It's got a wide range — galbisal, LA kkotgalbi, seasoned galbisal, chadolbagi (sliced beef brisket), yukhoe (beef tartare), plus sides like doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), doenjang sulbap (rice cooked in soybean paste broth), naengmyeon (cold noodles), and mukchunggak (acorn jelly salad).
The signature galbisal platter comes at 500g, and the LA kkotgalbi platter at 600g. Based on the current menu, they're priced at ₩65,900 and ₩82,900 respectively.
We ordered the 500g galbisal platter and the 600g LA kkotgalbi platter. With three of us eating, it was the perfect amount to try a good variety, so I was glad we got both.

After ordering, the side dishes started arriving one by one — lettuce and peppers for wraps, garlic, pickled onions, and a few different sauces. Beef is great with just a dab of salt, but I also like pairing different meats with sauce or wasabi, so I tried a bit of everything. It was nice that the meat wasn't served alone — there were plenty of extras to go with it.

And then there was the doenjang jjigae that came with the meal! The hot, savory broth had real depth, and it was great to sip between bites of meat. I noticed several other reviews mention this doenjang jjigae as rich and delicious, and after trying it myself, I get why people order it alongside the meat.
What was the charcoal-grilled galbisal like?

Finally, the galbisal arrived! Even in photos, you can see the deep red color and marbling of the meat. A full platter piled high looked seriously satisfying.

Big king oyster mushrooms and peppers were served on top of the meat, perfect for grilling alongside it. The staff placed each piece of meat on the charcoal grill one by one. The sizzle as the meat started cooking really made it feel like we were at a proper barbecue joint. 🤭

The galbisal wasn't too chewy — it had a pleasant, springy bite. There was a subtle smokiness from the charcoal along with the meat's own savory flavor, and a light dip in salt brought out its clean, mild taste even more.
Personally, of everything we ate that day, the texture of the galbisal was my favorite. If you're someone who already likes galbisal, I think you'd enjoy this one without any complaints. Other reviews I've seen also mention that the charcoal-grilled galbisal here is tender with good marbling.
How LA kkotgalbi differs from galbisal

Next up was the LA kkotgalbi, which stood out visually right from the start!

The marbling was packed in so densely that it looked rich and savory just from looking at it — a clearly different vibe from the galbisal.

Grilled and taken for a bite, the marbling delivered a rich, savory flavor, and the beefy aroma was a bit stronger too.

My fiancé and I enjoyed it, but honestly, the galbisal suited our taste a bit more. My mom, though, felt exactly the opposite! The LA kkotgalbi really hit the spot for her, and she ate it up happily. I guess even with the same animal, everyone has their own favorite cut and texture. 😊
So naturally, that day it became galbisal for us and LA kkotgalbi for mom — everyone eating what suited their own taste.
The Yeonsinnae beef spot my mother approved of
Honestly, that day I was frazzled and a little worn out from moving into our new place all day. So I really wanted a good meal to unwind over dinner, and grilling meat over the warm charcoal grill did melt away some of that day's fatigue.
Most of all, I loved sitting there with my mom and my fiancé, grilling piece after piece and chatting. Since my mom is usually picky about meat, hearing her say "This is good, you found a great place" made the meal even more satisfying.
Final verdict on Golmokjip Galbisal
Golmokjip Galbisal Yeonsinnae Main Branch is memorable not just for the meat but for the retro atmosphere you get to enjoy alongside it. If you're someone who loves 80s-90s vibes, you'll probably have fun just looking around the space.
- Galbisal → springy, clean flavor, with a subtle charcoal aroma and savoriness
- LA kkotgalbi → rich marbling, deep and savory flavor
The three of us had slightly different preferences, but the bottom line is we all enjoyed the meal! 😋 Having my mom approve of the taste made me especially proud. Next time I'd like to try other menu items too, so if I'm looking for a meat restaurant in Yeonsinnae again, I'll probably stop by here once more.
If you're craving charcoal-grilled beef in Yeonsinnae, or want to grill meat with your parents in a warm, nostalgic setting, this place is worth a visit.
