I recently visited one of the all-you-can-eat freshwater eel spots that's been hot on social media lately. Songnim Bok Jangeo's direct store near Ansan City Hall turned out to be a great restaurant where you can enjoy not just eel but pork belly and grilled chicken neck too. I'd recommend it for group work dinners or family gatherings, so here's my full review of Songnim Bok Jangeo Freshwater Eel All-You-Can-Eat Ansan City Hall Direct Store!

Parking at Songnim Bok Jangeo near Ansan City Hall

Songnim Bok Jangeo is a nationwide chain known for all-you-can-eat freshwater eel, and the branch I visited was a directly-run store close to Ansan City Hall. This area is actually notoriously hard to park in, so I was worried going in, but the Ansan City Hall direct store has basement parking, so I could visit without any parking stress. If the basement lot isn't convenient, there's also a public parking lot behind the building, but that one is paid by the customer.

Songnim Bok Jangeo runs with no break time, so it was easy to drop by whenever. It's a spacious restaurant, but if a lot of people are coming, I'd recommend reserving seats ahead of time.

Pork belly and chicken neck included in the table charge

At Songnim Bok Jangeo's all-you-can-eat freshwater eel, you can enjoy eel — great for boosting stamina — at a reasonable price, but there's a separate table charge. Since pork belly and grilled chicken neck are included in that table charge, it never felt like money wasted.

Songnim Bok Jangeo also sells energy-boosting eel extract, plus prepped freshwater eel for takeaway, so it's worth stopping by whenever you need either.

A self-serve bar where you grab your own sides

At the self-serve bar set up at Songnim Bok Jangeo, you can help yourself to shredded ginger and green onion kimchi to enjoy alongside the meal. If everyone takes only as much as they'll finish, I think this place can keep going strong for a long time.

You also grab the prepped freshwater eel, pork belly, and chicken neck yourself, so you can add more without any hesitation. Being able to see the fresh ingredients with your own eyes before grabbing them makes this the kind of all-you-can-eat eel restaurant you'd want to return to often.

Even if you're not an eel fan, there's pork belly and chicken neck ready to go, so everyone can pick according to their taste — which I found really satisfying.

It's nice for family gatherings too — even kids who don't eat eel can still enjoy the pork belly together.

Tips for grilling eel on charcoal

Since the eel is grilled directly over charcoal, the moment it hit the grill it took on a subtle smoky aroma.

The pork belly helps boost the charcoal heat, which seems to make the eel grill up even more deliciously.

The eel comes pre-cut into bite-sized pieces, and since it's grilled over charcoal, I think it's better to grill the eel plain and dip it into sauce rather than brushing on sauce before grilling.

Add shredded ginger to the teriyaki sauce and eat it with the eel, and you really can keep eating endlessly. I'll definitely be coming back to Songnim Bok Jangeo's all-you-can-eat freshwater eel. I'd recommend it as a large restaurant for group meals, group dinners, and family gatherings.

And of course, a shot of soju can't be missing at a spot this good!
