Late-night combo platter with raw shrimp at 8:30pm in Jeonpo, Busan

In short

Rigo Susan Jeonpo Station Main Branch is a live-fish sashimi bar a 4-minute walk from Exit 8 of Jeonpo Station in Busanjin, Busan. Arriving around 8:30pm without dinner after a liquor-infusion workshop, the writer ordered the mixed sashimi + raw shrimp set for ₩59,000, working through 10 kinds of sides, four kinds of aged sashimi (yellowtail, salmon, milchi, red seabream) and 6 pieces of raw shrimp. The chewy aged milchi and plump raw shrimp made for a satisfying combo worth recommending as a first stop for drinks.

Rigo Susan Jeonpo Station Main Branch

Mixed sashimi and raw shrimp set at Rigo Susan Jeonpo Station Main Branch

Hi, I'm Muldeogi, and I love checking out good restaurants. A few days ago, after finishing a liquor-infusion workshop, I was both hungry and a little tipsy, so I wanted a light snack to go with one more drink.

Side dishes spread on the table at Rigo Susan, a Jeonpo bar

So I dropped by Rigo Susan, a Jeonpo bar I'd had my eye on, and had the mixed sashimi and raw shrimp sashimi set. Here's my review of the generous spread — from the basic side dishes to the sashimi and raw shrimp.

I wanted fresh mixed sashimi, and it happened that raw shrimp had just come in, so I went straight in.

Jeonpo bars tend to be small, but Rigo Susan was relatively spacious and pleasant, which made it look good for small gatherings too.

How many kinds of sides come out? A generous spread of 8+ basic dishes

Several plates of basic side dishes on the table

First, a full spread of ssukidasi (side dishes) came out. Apparently the lineup changes with the season, so even repeat visits should feel new each time~

California roll, baek-kimchi, and fresh greens for wraps

On the day I visited, they served cold udon, spicy seasoned squid, corn cheese, okonomiyaki, steamed shrimp, sweet potato and squid tempura, California roll, tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes), baek-kimchi (non-spicy kimchi), and fresh greens for wraps.

The water is nutty and slightly sweet, too.

I hadn't had dinner and got there around 8:30pm, so seeing such a generous spread of basic side dishes was already a win.

Tteokbokki served as a side dish

The tteokbokki in particular was really good, and the cold udon was great for a refreshing bite on a hot day.

A bowl of refreshing cold udon

I liked the cold udon enough to consider ordering more, but with so much in the base spread I was already full and couldn't.

The spicy seasoned squid went well mixed with the chogochujang (vinegared chili paste) provided at the table.

I thought the tempura would just be sweet potato, but I was glad to find squid tempura mixed in too.

Four kinds of mixed sashimi — yellowtail, salmon, milchi, red seabream — with aged milchi the standout

Plate with the four kinds of mixed sashimi and raw shrimp

While I was still eating the side dishes, the sashimi came out quickly. Four kinds of mixed sashimi, plump raw shrimp, and 4 pieces of sushi rice came as the base set.

The small mixed sashimi set was made up of yellowtail, salmon, milchi, and red seabream. Of those, milchi was my favorite.

Milchi is already one of my favorite fish, and Rigo Susan's specially aged milchi had a great chewy texture and rich flavor~

I diligently made my own sushi and also enjoyed it wrapped in perilla leaves.

It was nice being able to eat it in several different combinations instead of just one way.

Raw shrimp sashimi, 6 pieces, and shrimp-head tempura — do they peel the shells for you?

Peeled raw shrimp sashimi, 6 pieces

Above all, the raw shrimp sashimi was the most impressive. When I visited, the restaurant was a bit quiet, so they peeled the shrimp shells for us. Apparently during busy hours it might come unpeeled.

The raw shrimp came as 6 pieces with the small mixed sashimi set. The bouncy texture of raw shrimp is the best~~ The flesh was sweet and had enough spring to it that it pushed back against my teeth — delicious.

After finishing the shrimp, they apparently fry up the shrimp heads for you too. It's a good way to enjoy something like a new dish if you're short on snacks, but we don't do well with shrimp heads, so we didn't request it and just enjoyed the raw shrimp.

Mixed sashimi + raw shrimp set: two flavors in one sitting

I especially liked this set for letting me have both mixed sashimi and raw shrimp sashimi at once. Rather than eating just one kind of sashimi the whole time, being able to alternate between different textures and flavors kept it from getting repetitive.

With such a varied and generous spread of side dishes, I was able to eat until I was full even though I'd skipped dinner. It's a lineup worth remembering when you want sashimi and drinks at a Jeonpo Station restaurant.
