Yongsan tteokbokki with water rice cake in the fish cake: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant in Yongsan, Seoul, that began as a street cart in 2004 and now sits in an alley by Exit 6 of Sinyongsan Station. On a weekday visit at 11:30am with family, the Hyeonseoni Combo Set at 26,000 won was ordered at medium spice: tteokbokki, sundae (blood sausage), assorted fritters, mini gimbap and fish cake, plus a water rice cake tucked into the fish cake, enough for 2 to 3 people to share generously. For a first visit to Hyeonseonine, the combo set was the easiest choice on the menu.

What kind of place is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch?
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a beloved Yongsan tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant that started as a street cart back in 2004. Today I dropped by with family while we were out and about in Yongsan — it had been a while since my last visit to the Yongsan main branch.
Hyeonseonine was a spot I used to go to a lot in my twenties, so just hearing the name brings back memories. Even after all this time, the same cozy, nostalgic atmosphere was still there, which made me weirdly happy haha. True to its long history, the place was still buzzing with customers at lunchtime!

How to get to Hyeonseonine from Sinyongsan Station, and its hours

- 🚗 No dedicated parking lot
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is tucked inside an alley, but it's close enough to Sinyongsan Station that getting there by public transit is easy. If you're driving, there's no dedicated lot, so it's worth checking nearby paid parking ahead of time.

Nearly full even at 11:30am on a weekday
We showed up around 11:30am on a weekday. I figured lunch rush hadn't really kicked in yet, but the restaurant was already almost full haha.
It seemed like a lot of nearby office workers had come in for lunch — a real testament to its reputation as a long-standing Yongsan tteokbokki spot. The vibe also leaned more toward old-school street-cart charm than the sleek, modern bunsik (Korean snack food) restaurants popping up these days, which made it feel even more nostalgic.
You order and prepay at the kiosk, and pick up things like utensils and pickled radish yourself from the self-serve bar. Even with a full house, turnover is quick since it's a bunsik restaurant, so I didn't think we'd be waiting long.

What comes in the 26,000 won Hyeonseoni Combo Set
What we ordered was the Hyeonseoni Combo Set! It lets you try all the popular menu items at once — tteokbokki, sundae (blood sausage), assorted fritters, mini gimbap, and fish cake. If it's hard to pick individual items, or if it's your first visit, ordering the combo set is probably the easiest option.
The portion was plenty generous for 2–3 people. Sharing a bit of everything with family left us all satisfyingly full. Being able to enjoy a variety of bunsik items in one go made the combo feel like solid value.

How spicy is medium-spice tteokbokki at Hyeonseonine?
Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki comes in mild, medium, or spicy, and we went with medium. The menu described it as a touch spicier than Shin Ramyun, and honestly, that description was spot on lol.
The first bite was a bit spicier than expected and caught me off guard, but it was the kind of flavor that kept pulling me back for more. It wasn't just sweet tteokbokki — there was a sharp, spicy kick that really woke up the palate, and I liked that a lot.
If you're sensitive to spice, even the medium level might feel a bit much, so starting with mild is probably safer. But if you like spicy tteokbokki, medium is likely the most reliably delicious choice.

When to add the self-serve fried batter powder
One distinctive feature of Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki is the fried batter powder available at the self-serve bar. You can add it right away when your food arrives, but I prefer to enjoy the tteokbokki's original flavor first, then sprinkle in the batter powder about halfway through. The crispy powder soaks up a bit of the sauce and changes the texture completely — it's a surprisingly great touch haha.
Within a single bowl, you start off with chewy rice cakes and spicy sauce, then later add the crispy, savory texture of the batter powder — so it never got boring from start to finish.

Dipping the sundae, fritters and mini gimbap in the tteokbokki sauce
The sundae, fritters, and mini gimbap in the Hyeonseoni Combo Set were also best enjoyed dipped in the tteokbokki sauce. Dunking the fritters fully in the sauce let the spicy seasoning soak in, and the mini gimbap dipped in the tteokbokki sauce was a great combo too.
Each item on its own is familiar bunsik, but laid out together in a generous spread and shared with family, everything tasted even better.

The hidden highlight: water rice cake inside the fish cake
And personally, my favorite part was finding water rice cake in the fish cake broth of the Hyeonseoni Combo Set! I really love water rice cake that's been simmered soft in fish cake broth, and I didn't expect to find it here, which made it even better.
The rice cake, soft and chewy after soaking up the warm broth, tasted like the tteokbokki I used to rinse and eat as a kid after the spicy sauce got to be too much, lol. Being able to sip the fish cake broth alongside it was great whenever the medium-spice tteokbokki felt like too much.

Restrooms and tips for the wait at Hyeonseonine
The restroom at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is next to the kitchen and has separate sections for men and women, so it was comfortable to use. There can be a wait during lunch hours or on weekends, so it's best to arrive with some buffer time, and if it's crowded, check the waitlist system at the entrance first!

Is Hyeonseonine Yongsan worth a return visit?
Coming back to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch after a long time, I was glad to find the same cozy atmosphere still intact, and the tteokbokki tasted much like I remembered.
If you want to enjoy casual bunsik with family or friends in Yongsan, or you're looking for a tteokbokki spot near Sinyongsan Station, it's worth a visit. It was a lunch that brought back memories and left us full and happy.
