Hanam Misa gelato shop: Seongju melon waffle cone at Damgeum Gelato

In short

Damgeum Gelato Misa Branch is an Italian government-certified handmade gelato dessert café in the Mono Lounge building on Misagangbyeonhangang-ro in Hanam, Gyeonggi. Four flavors came in cups and waffle cones — Seongju melon, pure milk, Venezuela single-origin dark chocolate, and Gyeongsan nectarine — and each one balanced sweetness and tartness differently, so switching between them was half the fun. For a light dessert stop after a meal in Misa, Damgeum Gelato Misa Branch is an easy recommendation.

I was in the Hanam Misa area and noticed this new Damgeum Gelato Hanam branch, so I stopped in. I usually prefer gelato over regular ice cream because you can actually taste the ingredients.

What kind of gelato does Damgeum Gelato make?

The gelato at Damgeum is Italian government-certified handmade gelato. Made following authentic Italian gelato production standards, it really lets the natural flavor of the ingredients come through.

Walking in, there were so many gelato flavors lined up that I had to pause and think about which to choose. Made with a wide range of real ingredients, this felt like a brand that cares more about the actual content and flavor of the raw ingredients than about flavoring with extracts.

Pistachio, rice, lemon: picking flavors at Damgeum Gelato

The best part of gelato is trying out different flavors, right? Damgeum Gelato has the common flavors plus distinctive ones like pistachio, rice, and lemon, so there's something to pick depending on your taste.

We took a seat and waited for our order. We chose Seongju melon, pure milk, Venezuela single-origin dark chocolate, and Gyeongsan nectarine!

Damgeum Gelato is a premium handmade gelato made with Italian production methods while bringing out the natural flavor of domestic ingredients, so compared to regular ice cream it has lower milk-fat content and less air whipped in — which gives it that chewier texture and more concentrated flavor with the first bite, which I found really appealing.

Out of all the flavors, I went with Gyeongsan nectarine, and the gelato in the waffle cone was so colorful it made a great photo op for a Misa dessert café date.

Tasting it, I really liked how it brought out the flavor of the fruit itself rather than the artificial sweetness you get in a lot of ice cream.

Gelato can get sickly sweet after a few bites and make you lose interest, but with Damgeum Gelato each flavor has a different balance of sweetness and tartness, so it was fun to switch between them.

Seongju melon and pure milk: how the two cups tasted

The refreshing tartness of the Seongju melon cleaned up the palate, while the nutty milk flavor was soft and rich — each had its own distinct charm.

I also loved that chewy yet soft texture unique to gelato. It's soft when scooped with a spoon, but melts quickly in the mouth, letting the flavors spread out — a different kind of enjoyment from regular ice cream.

Is Damgeum Gelato worth it as a dessert stop in Misa?

When looking for a café in Misa, big bakery cafés are great, but sometimes it's nice to seek out a Misa dessert shop where you can properly enjoy just one good gelato!

Damgeum Gelato Hanam branch is a Misa gelato spot worth visiting at least once if you prefer gelato to regular ice cream.

What I liked most was being able to pick out the natural fruit flavors myself among the many options, along with the rich chocolate and nutty milk flavors. The waffle cone was delicious too, so it was fun to taste distinctive flavors you can't find elsewhere.

Two flavors served together at Damgeum Gelato

Personally, I'd recommend picking two or more flavors rather than sticking to just one, so you can compare the different tastes side by side. Instead of going for something overly strong, you get a dessert made with good ingredients that's satisfying without being heavy!

A cool, chewy cup of handmade gelato

On a day when you're craving something sweet, a cool, chewy cup of handmade gelato is more than enough to lift your mood. This felt like a place I'd think of again on days in Hanam Misa when I wanted something light but delicious rather than heavy — a Misa dessert café that adults and kids alike can enjoy.
