We were out near Palgongsan and wanted Korean food for lunch, so we went to Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap. It was my mom, my grandmother, and me that day.

Is it convenient to visit after a Palgongsan drive?
There is a large parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so it was easy to come by car. People often drive around the Palgongsan area, so having plenty of parking was a pretty big plus. Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap is on Seochon-ro in Daegu's Dong-gu. Its hours are daily from 10:30 AM to 8 PM, so keep that in mind before visiting.

Maybe because of the wood-toned interior, it had that comforting feel unique to a Korean restaurant. Once inside, everything felt clean and pleasant. We kept saying how warm and homey it felt while we ate~
It looked like they get lots of reservations even on weekdays. There was group seating too, so it seemed like a good option for a larger family visit. Looking around that day, I saw other families dining there, and I could see why people looking for a Palgongsan-style Korean set meal come to places like this.
The hearty three-person set
What we ordered was the hearty three-person set.

It comes with grilled bulgogi, ureong ssamjang (freshwater snail soybean paste), mackerel, and stone-pot rice, so it looked just right for the three of us at lunch.

There were lots of side dishes to start with—lotus root, salad, spicy cucumber salad, salted seafood, and more...

Fresh kimchi and japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) came too. All the side dishes were crisp and fresh. With so many choices, you get the happy dilemma of deciding which one to eat with your rice.
How does the self-serve wrap-vegetable bar work?

And since we were at a ssambap place, we couldn't skip the ssam vegetables (leafy wraps), haha. Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap has a separate self-serve vegetable bar, where you can take whichever greens you want. They had several types, including lettuce and bok choy, so we took the plates from our table and filled them with as much as we wanted.
We each picked out the wrap vegetables we wanted. Such a healthy wellness meal!

There were also steamed cabbage wraps~~~ They went really well with the salted seafood and fresh greens. Just a heads-up. Now all the main dishes were out. Rather than just one dish arriving, the meat, fish, ssamjang, and rice were all set out at once, so the table quickly became overflowing.~~~
A filling set meal with mackerel, too

Here is the golden-fried mackerel. Since it was for three people, we got one and a half fish! The mackerel was enormous. We had leftovers and packed up half a fish to take home. The flesh was tender and mild—excellent. Such a rice thief!!!

My mom and grandmother both enjoyed it because the mackerel flesh was so tender, so I was glad we'd ordered this set.

It was nice to pick the mackerel meat off and eat it with warm stone-pot rice, or put it in a wrap with rice.
The grilled bulgogi and ureong ssamjang combination

True to grilled bulgogi, the meat had a subtle smoky aroma. It was good on its own, and it also worked beautifully in a wrap with ureong ssamjang. It wasn't tough, was seasoned just right, and had no off smell at all. The lean and fatty parts were nicely balanced. If you like fatty meat, you'll enjoy it even more~
There were so many freshwater snails in it. And they weren't chewy.

The ureong ssamjang had such an unusual flavor. It was unlike any ssamjang I've had elsewhere. A little like black bean sauce?? Kind of, but you'll have to try it to understand. Wrapped with rice in fresh greens, it was a great match. So many layers of flavor. This is what a rice thief is.

Hot miyeokguk (seaweed soup) came with it too.
Springy stone-pot rice and sungnyung
The moment I opened the lid, it was full of warm rice, and the grains had such a pleasantly firm, springy texture.

I'm pretty particular about rice texture, and when I took a spoonful, the grains weren't mushy—they had a little bounce and just the right stickiness. Really delicious rice. The texture was seriously no joke, haha.

After eating some of the stone-pot rice, I poured hot water over the remaining nurungji (scorched rice crust) to make sungnyung. A spoonful of warm sungnyung after the meal made my stomach feel soothed, and it was such a clean finish. Ending on a warm note~
Chaga mushroom tea and sikhye, too

This was chaga mushroom tea, which the owner says he carefully brews every morning. Wow, it was like a rich herbal medicine? I feel like I'd get healthier if I drank a cup every dayㅠ It had the feeling of a wholesome tea your country grandmother would brew.

This is sweet, chilled sikhye (sweet rice drink), made with care by the owner's wife. It freshened up my mouth so much that I forgot all about wanting to go to a café.

Oh, they even have mouthwash. I can't even imagine how much thought they put into their guests' convenience.
Final thoughts on a Palgongsan family lunch

Oh, right next door, the owner was growing vegetables in a field. You can taste those fresh vegetables, grown carefully by hand. The view is no joke, right? So charming. If you want a hearty Korean meal after driving around Palgongsan, I think this is worth adding to your Daegu Korean restaurant list. You can enjoy wrap vegetables, ureong ssamjang, meat, fish, and stone-pot rice all in one meal, so it is also a good choice when you want a filling Palgongsan-style Korean set lunch. My family left feeling very full that day :)
