Gejang set plus small crab soup at a Cheonan restaurant: Huni Gejang

In short

Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is a blue crab soup and gejang (marinated raw crab) restaurant on Taejosan-gil in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, Chungnam. A big-eating couple ordered the small blue crab soup plus one extra gejang set, which came with one soy-marinated crab, half a spicy-marinated crab, one soy-marinated shrimp and stone-pot rice, while the small crab soup held four blue crabs too large to fit on a side plate. The portions at Huni Gejang were generous enough that neither of them felt hungry again until evening, making it a solid pick for a family meal.

Today I'm introducing what might be my all-time favorite crab and gejang (marinated raw crab) restaurant in Cheonan~~

Signature crab dish at Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch

If you're someone who loves gejang or crab soup, you need to pay attention right now! I went to Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch, and wow… I lost count of how many times I shouted 'amazing!' while eating 😱❤️ I got moved by the deep flavor passed down through three generations, then fell in love all over again with the visuals of crabs packed with meat. Here's my honest review!

What kind of restaurant is Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch?

Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is a crab specialty restaurant on Taejosan-gil in Dongnam-gu, Cheonan. I found this out right when I walked in — Huni Gejang has been carrying on the family recipe since it started at Suyeong Paldo Market in Busan in the late 1980s!

  • 1st generation: the grandmother's secret recipe
  • 2nd generation: the mother's philosophy of using only good ingredients
  • 3rd generation: her son 'Huni' now running the place, carrying on the care and flavor!!

That's some serious trust right there!!

Ordering the small crab soup plus one extra gejang set for two

We ordered the small crab soup plus one extra gejang set! I'd had gejang here before and it had zero fishy taste — it was seriously delicious!

Side dish spread including soft tofu and seaweed stems

After a short wait, the side dishes get set out like this! Soft tofu, seaweed, bracken, seaweed stems, salted squid, dried seaweed, butter, plastic gloves, and more! The gejang set came out first!! The gejang set for one person is 1 soy-marinated crab + half a spicy-marinated crab + 1 soy-marinated shrimp + stone-pot rice!!!

Can you see the visuals??ㅠㅠ

And the crab set we ordered together — no need to even say it, it was the perfect rice thief! 🍚❤️

How do the soy-marinated and spicy-marinated crab taste?

Huni Gejang's soy-marinated crab isn't salty at all — the sweet, savory flavor of the crab meat itself fills your mouth, and the moment you mix rice into the shell, the nutty richness explodes!

Maybe because it's really blue crab season right now, but look how packed the meat is..ㅠ

The spicy-marinated crab was just as good — the spicy, savory sauce clung perfectly to every bite, and I couldn't put my chopsticks down 😋

Since they use only domestic natural ingredients, my stomach felt clean and settled afterward with no heaviness at all — I thought this would be a great spot to bring my parents too.

Four large blue crabs in the small crab soup

The visuals were explosive! Just look at this crab soup with four huge blue crabs in it...ㅠㅠ We ordered the spicy, refreshing crab soup along with the crab set today, and the moment the hot pot arrived, our jaws dropped.

First you wait about 5 more minutes using the sand timer before you can eat!!! I honestly couldn't wait...ㅠㅠㅠ

Five-minute sand timer beside the simmering crab soup

But seriously, there were four huge, fresh blue crabs packed tightly into the soup... I'm genuinely losing it...ㅠㅠㅠ When the broth started bubbling and I lifted up one meaty crab, the white, plump flesh tucked shyly inside the shell along with the orange roe… it was pure emotion itself ㅠㅠㅠㅠhuh..ㅠㅠ

Can you see the size of the crab..? It's magic how the side plate suddenly looks small... The crab is genuinely too big for the plate..!! And this is just half a crab, by the way.

Half a crab too large to fit on the side plate

They put a whopping four of these giant crabs in there!! Even as a big-eating couple, we were so full after finishing it that we still weren't hungry by evening... There's really that much meat too ㅠㅠ

The broth, and finishing with nurungji tea

Maybe thanks to their house-made soy base and seasoning, the crab soup broth wasn't salty at all — it was deep, savory, and refreshingly clean, the kind that completely settles your stomach! Picking out the chunky crab meat and mixing it with rice in the broth… that's basically paradise right there. After finishing it all, we topped it off with nurungji (scorched rice) tea made from the stone-pot rice~~ absolutely wiped it clean for a perfect finish!!>_<

If you want honest, fresh, high-quality gejang and a warming, spicy crab soup in Cheonan, I highly recommend Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch! I'm planning to come back again soon with my family 💖
