Today I went to Dongseong-ro for a hospital appointment, and once all my energy drained out, I suddenly craved greasy meat. Not thick cuts — thin, savory pork belly that sizzles the moment it hits the foil-lined grill and goes straight into your mouth! You know that feeling, right? 😋

So I walked toward Gyodong looking for thin-cut meat, and this place caught my radar — Suyeong Naengsam Daegu Direct Store, rising as a new powerhouse among Dongseong-ro's frozen pork belly restaurants. What kind of place is Suyeong Naengsam Daegu Direct Store?

Suyeong Naengsam Daegu Direct Store is the Daegu branch of a frozen pork belly restaurant famous for insane waits in Suyeong-gu, Busan. Walking around Dongseong-ro hungry after my hospital visit, I couldn't resist walking in — the exterior looked so clean and had a great retro vibe.

Inside, there was a big promotional display about Suyeong Naengsam on the wall. Turns out this isn't cheap, low-quality frozen meat — it's Grade 1+ domestic female pig, raw (under 6 months), quick-frozen to lock in the juices and savory flavor. My expectations shot way up.

Suyeong Naengsam Daegu Direct Store sits right in the heart of the Dongseong-ro and Gyodong hotspot strip (near Gukchebosang-ro), so it's super convenient if you want to hit round two in Gyodong afterward. The exterior gives off a clean, hip retro energy that stops passersby in their tracks.

Step inside and there's none of that sticky floor or smoky haze typical of BBQ places — it's kept very clean and pleasant.

On one side of the restaurant, there's a spotless self-serve bar with fresh lettuce wraps, kimchi, various seasonings, and a house sauce that takes the meat's flavor to 200% — all yours to grab freely, no shame.

Round one: quick-frozen shaved pork belly and pork belly

First up for round one, the 'quick-frozen sliced pork belly' and 'quick-frozen pork belly' arrived. The ratio of pale lean meat to fat was perfect, and the bright red color proved the freshness of raw meat that had been quick-frozen.

We set garlic to grill in the corner of the heated foil pan, then laid the meat down with a sizzle! The biggest perk of thin-cut meat is that it cooks the instant it touches the grill, so your chopsticks never stop moving.

The first bite of the perfectly cooked sliced pork belly, no sauce, was pure savory meat flavor — then I tried it with Suyeong Naengsam's killer feature, the 'pa kimchi' (green onion kimchi). The juices burst in my mouth, and the tangy, spicy pa kimchi completely cut through the richness, so the meat just kept going in endlessly. The combo with the sweet-and-sour jaeraegi (quick pickled radish) was also fantastic!

A cold glass of beer, cheers! 🍻 to wash away all the fatigue from the hospital visit. Savory meat plus refreshing beer is always the right answer.

Round two: quick-frozen pork neck and pork doenjang jjigae

We finished round one in no time and added 'quick-frozen pork neck' and some rice dishes for round two! Thin-sliced pork neck for grilling isn't common, but unlike pork belly, it had a fatless, chewy, clean charm that really impressed. Wrapped up with pa kimchi, it was heaven all over again.

And here's the perfect finisher after all that meat: 'pork doenjang jjigae.' The bubbling stone pot was generously loaded with tofu, zucchini, and plenty of meat! The broth was deep and savory, perfectly washing away all the greasiness from the meat.

Then I scooped a big spoonful of freshly steamed rice, topped it with well-grilled quick-frozen pork neck, and mixed it into the doenjang jjigae — I felt like I was about to burst, but I couldn't put down my spoon and scraped the bowl clean. 🍚

Suyeong Naengsam truly lives up to its name — both the 'quick-frozen pork belly' and the thin, clean 'quick-frozen pork neck' were incredibly appealing. Above all, the combo of the house sauce and pa kimchi with the meat was truly the best!

Dragging my tired body in after a hospital appointment, I stumbled onto some of the best quality quick-frozen meat of my life!
