Sinnonhyeon restaurant for milder cheese dakgalbi: Dakgalbijeon

In short

Dakgalbijeon Gangnam Branch is a dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) restaurant on the 2nd floor of Gangnam Diobil, near exit 7 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Seocho, Seoul. I brought my mother and ordered the gamssachidak (cheese dakgalbi) set for two, and without being asked the owner toned the standard spice level down, so we wrapped the sweet-spicy cheese dakgalbi in chewy potato pancake. Set back from the busy restaurant row on a quiet second floor with 1 hour of free parking, Dakgalbijeon Gangnam Branch is an easy choice for a meal with a parent.

After taking my mother out for a nail appointment near Sinnonhyeon Station, we continued our little date at a dakgalbi place I'd scoped out beforehand! It's right near exit 7 of Sinnonhyeon Station, and even in busy Gangnam it offers 1 hour of free parking — a real free-parking gem in Gangnam! *_*

Off the restaurant row, on a quiet 2nd floor: why Dakgalbijeon suits a meal with parents

Instead of being in the busy restaurant alley, it's on the 2nd floor of a commercial building in front of Summit Apartment, so it wasn't loud at all — a pleasant, cozy atmosphere, perfect for a quiet meal with my mother.

Since the restaurant's literally named after dakgalbi and jeon (pan-fried pancake), we ordered the gamssachidak (cheese dakgalbi wrapped in potato pancake) for two :) *Order details

Gamssachidak for two at Dakgalbijeon: the potato pancake comes first

The potato pancake (gamjajeon)

The generous potato pancake included in the set

The first thing set on the table was the big, hearty potato pancake included in the set. Most restaurant potato pancakes are either julienned and pan-fried or mixed with flour batter, but this one had a distinctly different texture from the moment I tore it apart with chopsticks.

It had that chewy, springy quality you'd get from steaming a whole potato and grinding it very finely before pan-frying it. The moment it hit my mouth, there was zero dry, floury taste — just chewy texture and the potato's deep, nutty flavor filling my whole mouth. The edges were crispy and the inside was chewy, so good enough to eat plain with just a dab of soy sauce — truly a top-quality potato pancake ㅠ_ㅠ

The cheese dakgalbi, toned down in spice

The owner, taking our order, noticed we'd brought my mother along, and told us he'd toned down the dakgalbi's default spice level for us without our even asking. That was seriously full marks for thoughtfulness >_<

Dakgalbijeon's real trick: wrapping cheese dakgalbi in potato pancake

How the milder spice level tasted for my mother

Dakgalbijeon's real kick is this eating combo. Instead of lettuce, you pile the sweet-spicy dakgalbi wrapped in stretchy, nutty cheese onto that chewy potato pancake from earlier and wrap it up!

The nutty potato pancake fully neutralizes the spicy dakgalbi sauce, and everything melds together soft and chewy in your mouth — the combo is genuinely great.

Dakgalbi and cheese on the grill

Dakgalbi and cheese together on a hot grill is delicious on its own by default too! hahaha

I think my mother enjoyed it even more since they toned down the spice for her! Plenty of cabbage and perilla leaves, and the dakgalbi was so tender with no gamey smell at all.

Finished shot of the potato pancake wrap combo

But honestly, this wrap combo is the real winner!!! Jeon and meat together is a combo anyone would love, haha. I think it's especially great to bring your parents to! We were too full to try the fried rice, which was a shame ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

Table at Dakgalbijeon Gangnam Branch after finishing the meal

Dakgalbijeon Gangnam Branch, summed up

  • A rare calm and relaxed atmosphere in busy Gangnam — perfect for bringing older parents
  • Sensible enough to tone down the spice without being asked! Not overly seasoned, and generous with cheese — so good
  • First time trying dakgalbi + jeon together, and it goes better than rice does!!
  • Definitely want to try the fried rice next time ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

My mother said she wasn't very hungry right up until we walked into the restaurant! But the sweet-spicy dakgalbi and chewy potato pancake combo clearly suited her taste, since she said it was delicious — as a daughter-in-law, it was such a rewarding dinner haha. If you want a filling, great-value, thoughtfully run meal in a calm, quiet spot near the busy Sinnonhyeon area, I strongly recommend Dakgalbijeon with its dakgalbi and potato pancake set /ㅅ/
