Jeonju charcoal grill, 500g premium short ribs for two: Ubookgeum

In short

Ubookgeum Saenggalbi Seosin Branch is a charcoal-grilled fresh beef rib restaurant on Ongoeul-ro in Seosin-dong, Jeonju. Two of us shared one plate of premium-grade fresh beef short ribs (500g, 58,000 won), grilled at the table by staff and served with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and steamed egg, and the meat closest to the bone was the most tender part. Ubookgeum Saenggalbi is a safe choice for a filling meal of thick beef with rice, including when you bring your parents.

Today's post is an honest review of Ubookgeum Saenggalbi, a Jeonju beef and pork rib restaurant located in Seosin-dong, Jeonju. It's a charcoal-grilled fresh rib specialist.

Charcoal-grilled fresh ribs at Ubookgeum Saenggalbi in Seosin-dong, Jeonju

This is the place I head to when I'm craving proper charcoal-grilled ribs in Jeonju — the meat quality here is on a different level. Ubookgeum Saenggalbi is easy to find as a go-to meat restaurant in Seosin-dong, Jeonju. I went in expecting thick fresh ribs grilled over real charcoal, and staff even grilled the meat for us, so we could eat comfortably. What stood out most was the meat's juiciness and texture.

What is on the lunch special menu?

Besides the evening meat menu, Ubookgeum Saenggalbi also has a separate lunch special menu. There's perilla seed and dried radish greens soup for ₩11,000, yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) set for ₩12,000, galbitang (rib soup) set for ₩15,000, yukhoe bibimbap (rice with raw beef tartare) for ₩14,000, yukhoe bibim naengmyeon (cold noodles with raw beef tartare) for ₩12,000, and seolleongtang (ox bone soup) set for ₩12,000.

It paired especially well with warm rice, so I thought it would be a good place to bring parents for a meal too. Since there's a separate lunch special menu, you don't have to go only in the evening for meat — it's a solid option for a filling meal anytime.

Inside the restaurant and the full menu

At Ubookgeum Saenggalbi, a meat restaurant in Seosin-dong, Jeonju, the interior overall was spacious and clean.

Ubookgeum Saenggalbi sells a variety of meat dishes including beef ribs, seasoned beef ribs, seasoned pork ribs, and Hanwoo yukhoe. It's not just meat dishes — I also liked that there's a good variety of options for a proper lunch.

So it was good for a relaxed meal for two, and it also looked like a fine spot for a work dinner or group gathering. At Korean BBQ places, clothes often end up smelling of smoke afterward, but I wasn't too bothered by that this time, which was nice.

Premium fresh beef short ribs, 500g for 58,000 won: enough for two

For this visit, we ordered what's essentially Ubookgeum's signature dish: a plate of beef ribs. It's premium-grade Ubookgeum ribs, 500g, priced at ₩58,000. It was a fitting portion for two people to share.

As soon as the meat arrived, the thick cut of fresh ribs caught my eye first — definitely different from the usual thin-sliced meat. The meat around the bone was especially delicious. Once it hit the charcoal, it sizzled away with a subtle charcoal aroma rising up, and that's the moment my appetite really kicked in.

Doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and steamed egg came along with it too, which made for a pretty satisfying meal overall. It wasn't just about the meat — it was a well-rounded spread that worked great as a full meal with warm rice.

How the charcoal-grilled ribs taste when staff grill them for you

Once the thick fresh ribs went onto the charcoal, the juices bubbled away on the grill, cooking up beautifully. What I appreciated most was that staff did the grilling for us.

Taking a bite, I could really taste the juiciness. Beef is always right. There was a satisfying chew to the thick beef without much toughness, and eating it with warm rice brought out the savory meaty flavor even more.

Which banchan (side dishes) come with the ribs

Ordering the meat comes with a variety of banchan (side dishes) as well. There was seasoned bean sprouts, myeongyi namul (mountain garlic leaves), baek-kimchi (white kimchi), pa-kimchi (green onion kimchi), pickled onions, and icy dongchimi (radish water kimchi).

Basic banchan including seasoned bean sprouts and myeongyi namul

These sides go well with the meat, so you can mix and match depending on your taste. Taking a sip of the dongchimi broth between bites of meat especially cleansed the palate.

It also paired nicely with the pa-kimchi.

The tender meat right off the bone

When eating fresh ribs, the part I personally look forward to most is the meat clinging to the bone. Sure enough, the meat around the bone was more tender and soft. Finishing off the charcoal-grilled meat by picking the meat off the bone at the end made it feel like properly eating fresh ribs.

Picking the meat off the bone from fresh ribs

It was good with just salt or the basic banchan, and pairing it with myeongyi namul or pickled onions let you enjoy it in a different way.

Personally, I felt the beef ribs were more filling and delicious eaten with rice. Piling a bite of meat on rice with pickled onions or myeongyi namul cut through the richness and kept me reaching for more.

It was good for two people sharing a plate of fresh ribs, and with the side dishes it made for a full meal. If you like dishes like fresh ribs where you get to enjoy the flavor of the meat itself, this could be a good spot to visit with parents too.

Is Ubookgeum Saenggalbi Seosin Branch worth a visit?

At Ubookgeum Saenggalbi, a favorite restaurant in Seosin-dong, Jeonju, we finished off with plum tea and sujeonggwa (cinnamon persimmon punch). The beef ribs we had this time were a 500g plate for ₩58,000, and grilling the thick meat over real charcoal really let the distinct charcoal flavor come through.

Best of all, having staff grill the meat for us made for a relaxed meal, and the juicy meat with especially tender bits around the bone left a lasting impression. On a day in Jeonju when you're craving a thick piece of beef with charcoal-grilled ribs, and want to enjoy proper fresh ribs with warm rice, Ubookgeum Saenggalbi is worth checking out as a go-to meat restaurant in Seosin-dong, Jeonju.
