Bubble lamp interior at a Marine City Chinese restaurant: Bueokgan

In short

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is a Chinese restaurant on Marine City 3-ro in Haeundae, Busan, with an ocean view over Dongbaekseom. In a 100-pyeong dining room set with George Nelson bubble lamps and European furniture, the writer ordered suran ogyeop ganjajang (black bean noodles with poached egg and pork belly), chadol usamgyeop jjamppong (spicy noodle soup with beef brisket), and black vinegar deungsim tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork loin); all three were mild rather than harsh and generous with meat. Between the view, the room and the food, Bueokgan is a place worth returning to.

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch

A Haeundae Chinese restaurant that nails not just proper Chinese cooking but the whole atmosphere of the space. The panoramic Dongbaekseom ocean view was genuinely moving, and the roughly 100-pyeong space was on a completely different level from the noisy, chaotic image you usually associate with a Chinese restaurant — upscale, and the vibe was king.

The George Nelson bubble lamps in particular were the standout point, very atmospheric and memorable. And the European furniture placed around the restaurant made me feel like I'd wandered into a high-end furniture shop rather than a Chinese restaurant — that's Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch, a Marine City favorite.

The moment you step off the elevator at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch, the ocean view hits you at a glance — it's moving before you've even walked in. Kyah~~~~ The interior feels like you've arrived at a café with a great view. Amazing.

Ah, that Dongbaekseom ocean view is too good, what do I do haha. I want to live here.

The George Nelson bubble lamps, almost a signature of Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch, blend beautifully with the ocean view and leave a strong impression.

An upscale interior mood. Above all, the space felt airy and comfortable. Assorted ceramics displayed on high-end European furniture. Various types of gaoliang liquor visible too. Private rooms were also available.

There's plenty to look at everywhere. Exploring the interior alone is fun.

Three private rooms at Bueokgan: good for family meals and gatherings

Wow. A large room opened up onto yet another view. There are three rooms total, well suited for family dinners, dates with a partner, or group gatherings. Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch seemed like the perfect spot to host people you're grateful to, or guests you want to treat well.

I spent a long time just soaking in the atmosphere haha. Ugh. That Dongbaekseom ocean view, no matter how many times you see it..... endlessly moving.

Ordering at the table kiosk: what we chose at Bueokgan

Now, setting the sightseeing aside, time to order from the kiosk on the table. This place has authentic Chinese dishes as its core lineup, and among them we went for the reportedly most popular items: suran ogyeop ganjajang, chadol usamgyeop jjamppong, and black vinegar heungchu deungsim tangsuyuk!

Also heard that a receipt photo review gets you a free order of eohang mandu (dumplings).

First, a photo with the ocean view.

A delicious smell filling the air with a very appetizing look!

Batter that's obviously fried in clean oil at a glance. And the red jjamppong that stirs up your appetite!

How does the chadol usamgyeop jjamppong taste, and can spice-shy diners handle it?

The chadol usamgyeop jjamppong at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch wasn't spicy or harsh, so even a spice-wimp like me could dig in without fear. Lift up a chopstick-full and you can see the meat was packed in generously — a real beef brisket jjamppong.

Chadol usamgyeop jjamppong loaded with meat

So meaty~~~ The moment this jjamppong hit my mouth, I got a full wok-hei smokiness, and with the rich meat broth and generous meat, it's the kind of dish you'd crave even on a rainy day. And above all, it wasn't spicy or harsh, so even a spice-wimp like me could fearlessly choose jjamppong and slurp it down happily.

Suran ogyeop ganjajang: the pork belly steals the show

The suran ogyeop ganjajang also carries that smoky flavor. The combo of pork belly and a savory, soft poached egg. Mix the poached egg into the noodles and slurp away.

Ganjajang mixed with poached egg and noodles

My personal theory: mixing it roughly and quickly makes it taste even better. This ganjajang was sweetish and deeply savory — I finished the noodles but was still reluctant to stop, so I kept popping the onions into my mouth.

A bite of the sea, then back to a bite of jjajang.

A bowl of jjajangmyeon set against the sea view

This pork belly is especially amazing. Big, hearty chunks of meat, loads of it. A completely different recipe from the small, dry meat bits at your typical Chinese restaurant.

Black vinegar deungsim tangsuyuk with Chinese black vinegar sauce

The black vinegar heungchu deungsim tangsuyuk was very tender and savory. Apparently even the sauce is different from the start — made with black vinegar sourced directly from China. Maybe that's why it had such deep flavor and went down smoothly with zero greasiness. Usually by the time tangsuyuk arrives I'm too full to eat much, but this time I kept eating right to the end.

Overall, none of the dishes had harsh seasoning, so this is the kind of meal any family — men, women, young and old, especially little kids — could eat without worry.

Verdict: who should eat at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is already a well-loved spot with locals as a Marine City favorite. On top of that, word of mouth brings in people deliberately traveling from Gwangalli, Dalmaji or even Nampo-dong, so the place gets busy. When I went, there were foreign guests too.

With a café-like atmosphere, a moving ocean view and an upscale interior, it's no exaggeration to say I'd never experienced a Chinese restaurant like this before. It was that good — a place I want to come back to!
