What is the dining room like at Eonyang Dak Kalguksu in Songcheon-dong?

Walking in, the first thing that catches your eye is the overall tidy, well-organized interior. Cleanliness and atmosphere matter a lot at a restaurant, and this place felt clean from the first impression — good for a family meal or any day you just want to eat comfortably. The staff greeted us kindly too, so we started the meal in a good mood.

Perilla chicken kalguksu with 24-hour aged house-made noodles

The first thing we tried here was, of course, the chicken kalguksu. Eonyang's kalguksu is said to use house-made noodles aged for 24 hours.

Maybe because the noodles are made in-house, they had a different texture from typical kalguksu — chewy yet smooth going down.

A bowl of chicken kalguksu in perilla broth

The broth in particular is a nutty perilla base, so from the very first spoonful it had a clean but savory flavor. The distinctive nuttiness of perilla blended naturally into the broth — not sharp or strong, but the kind of taste you keep going back to. Eating a spoonful of broth together with the noodles warmed me up from the inside, making it a fitting dish for when you want a filling meal.

Lifting up the house-made noodles from the kalguksu

There was chicken in it too, which made it feel more substantial than a noodle-only kalguksu. Warm broth, tender chicken, and chewy house-made noodles together made for a pretty satisfying bowl on its own.

And I can't leave out the chicken gomtang we also ordered. It came in a hot stone pot, which meant it stayed warm right to the last bite. Eating it together with rice made for more than a satisfying meal. The broth was clean and light, easy to eat without feeling heavy.

How the spicy silbi kimchi, made fresh daily, pairs with the soup

Personally, what paired well with the food was the silbi kimchi they say they make every day. Its lively spiciness went really well alongside the mild chicken kalguksu and gomtang.

A bite of the spicy kimchi alongside the nutty, clean broth really perked up my appetite, and I kept reaching for more. Especially good was taking a bite of kalguksu noodles, then some kimchi, then a spoonful of warm broth — the spicy and nutty flavors alternated and made it even more enjoyable.
