Jeju City black pork restaurant with matcha salt: Pork80 Jeju Airport

In short

Pork80 Jeju Airport Branch is a black pork grill house serving Nanchuk Matdon on Noyeon-ro in Jeju City. A family drove up from Seogwipo with their child for a reserved meal of one plate of Nanchuk Matdon, where the owner grilled the first round himself and the meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) came in a stone pot rather than a small dipping dish. Pork belly was best with matcha salt and pork neck with meljeot, and the juiciness ranked among the best black pork the writer has eaten in Jeju.

Jiyul and I went up from Seogwipo to Jeju City for a change of scenery! We were starving, so lunch was at a black pork restaurant near Jeju Airport that's pretty famous — Pork80 Jeju Airport Branch. It's the place where you can enjoy Nanchuk Matdon, the pork featured on Choi Ja's Local Calling, at its best.

What is Nanchuk Matdon black pork?

So what is 'Nanchuk Matdon'? It carries the bloodline of Jeju's native traditional black pig, with four times the marbling of regular pork, giving it more elastic fat and a distinctly chewy, savory flavor. It's an improved breed of Jeju black pig, bred to be even tastier and more enjoyable — that's Nanchuk Matdon.

What is Pork80 Jeju Airport Branch like inside?

The outside has a bit of an old-school diner feel, but the inside was cleaner and hipper than I expected. The mix of tidiness and old-school charm actually worked for me.

Since we'd reserved ahead, the side dishes were already set up. The staff noticed my wife's hair wasn't tied back and quietly brought over a hair tie, haha! My wife said that was really thoughtful and told me to take a photo of it. It's great when a place has that kind of attentiveness.

The owner grills the first round for you

I'm a Jeju local, but I don't eat black pork that often — usually white pork since it's cheaper. Still, today we ordered a plate of Nanchuk Matdon. For the record, the owner grills the first batch himself so you get the best possible first bite (marinated meat excluded). There were also various tips posted around on how to eat it best, haha, and the casual, thrown-together way they were put up felt genuinely like an old-school diner.

Our order arrived. I don't know if it comes through clearly, but the meat was glossy, almost like a model of meat, haha. The color and the fat ratio — genuinely the most appetizing-looking meat I've seen since living in Jeju.

The owner grilled the meat himself, flipping it front and back and even standing pieces up so every side cooked evenly. He kept adding mushrooms and green onions too, staying attentive the whole time.

Meljeot served in a stone pot, not a dipping dish

This is meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce), which I love. In Jeju, you boil it and dip the meat generously into it while eating. It usually comes in a small dish, but at Pork80 — the famous black pork spot near Jeju Airport — it comes in a stone pot, haha. GOOOOOOOD.

After a short wait, the meat came out perfectly golden-brown. Hungry Jiyul waited and waited, and finally it was time to eat! If you're looking for a black pork restaurant in Jeju City, go for Pork80 Jeju Airport Branch, where you can enjoy Nanchuk Matdon instead of regular black pork.

Matcha salt or meljeot: which cut goes with which dip?

Jiyul, who loves meat, ate so well! The salt being matcha salt made it even tastier, so she gobbled it up too.

My first bite was dipped straight into the matcha salt, and the juiciness of the meat was no joke, haha. You really have to eat it yourself to understand — words don't do it justice. I found the pork belly tastier dipped in matcha salt, and the pork neck better dipped generously in meljeot. Overall, this was easily one of the best black pork meals I've had in Jeju in terms of juiciness and flavor.

My wife ate well too, mixing in the tofu from the meljeot and even mixing meljeot into her rice. If you're visiting Jeju City with family and want great black pork near the airport, come and enjoy a meal here without worry.

Of course, I ate my fill too, haha. I've been gaining weight back after dieting, but I couldn't resist meat this good... I really couldn't. Dipped generously in meljeot, the savoriness explodes. Good juiciness and texture from the meat, plus the umami of the meljeot — the finishing touch!

An interior styled right down to the restroom hallway

Jiyul needed to use the bathroom, so we went, and even the hallway to the bathroom was pretty, with nice interior design. I once read that when running a restaurant or café, making the bathroom pretty leaves a good impression and increases the chance customers come back. It was genuinely clean, with great color choices and interior, so I took some photos.
