Gyeongju pie shop haul taken home to Daegu family: Gyeongju Tokyo Pie
In short
Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a takeout-only handmade pie bakery on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. Arriving after 3pm, the writer bought the last 3 pies left and carried them home to Daegu to share with family: the signature Gyeongju Tokyo Pie holds a whole Busa apple, while the Tokyo Red Bean Pie has a gentle, mellow sweetness. Since Gyeongju Tokyo Pie bakes only twice a day, go early if you want a box as a gift.

Why Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is the gift to bring home from Hwangnidan-gil
With so many dessert spots in Hwangnidan-gil these days, if you're wondering what gift might stand out a little more, how about Gyeongju Tokyo Pie, handmade pies made directly by a Japanese baker? Located in Hwangnidan-gil, Gyeongju, this takeout-only bakery is known for its signature pie packed with a whole apple.
Takeout only: no seating at Gyeongju Tokyo Pie

Boxes of apples stacked right at the entrance..! Gyeongju Tokyo Pie says they use carefully selected 100% domestic Busa apples, aged for a set time. What makes it a bit more special: while most apple pies usually have a jam-type filling, this place puts the apple in whole, which is exactly why I got curious and visited.

I was planning to try one of each and then say 'this is the trending Hwangnidan-gil gift you'll end up buying a whole gift set of'... but? I visited after 3pm and only 3 were left before it sold out ^_ㅠ Even the owner said they didn't expect it to go this fast — since they only bake twice a day at 11:30 and 14:30, don't go late, run there haha..

The 3-flavor premium gift set.. Hello 🖐🏻
Events running at Gyeongju Tokyo Pie

There's a birthday event, a timer event, a receipt event, and more, so worth checking out! My birthday happened to be this month, but you need stock to buy it..ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ so I just said 'give me whatever's left~' and took it all home haha

Isn't the gift box so classy? The packaging itself feels like a mix of Gyeongju sensibility with a spoonful of Tokyo mood — I think whoever receives it would be really happy haha
How to store and reheat Gyeongju Tokyo Pie

[Storage instructions] Depending on storage conditions after purchase, quality can decline — refrigerate before bed and eat as soon as possible! ✔ Refrigerated: up to 2 days from purchase ✔ Frozen: up to 1 week from purchase
[How to enjoy] Reheating slightly in an air fryer or toaster makes it even crispier and tastier! ✔ After refrigerating: eat as is, or air fry at 180℃ for about 5 minutes ✔ After freezing: half-thaw ➡ air fry at 180℃ for 7–10 minutes
I originally planned to eat one pie while wandering around Hwangnidan-gil, but I felt like I'd end up eating them all myself, so I just brought them straight to Daegu and ate them with my family.
The signature Gyeongju Tokyo Pie with a whole Busa apple inside

With a sweet apple scent drifting up, this place's signature Gyeongju Tokyo Pie has such a crisp coating I wanted to imitate the ASMR crunch sound myself 👍🏻

Splitting it in half, seeing the whole chunk of Busa apple in there even though I already knew about it was still surprising. My family expected jam to come pouring out too, so they were all amazed it was a whole apple haha

Taking a bite, the sweet apple texture and the layered pastry blended so naturally together that 'ah, this is fancy' just slipped out.
There's almost no artificial or cinnamon-made sweetness — you get the soft natural sweetness of the apple itself, which made it perfect as a slightly more special Hwangnidan-gil gift.
Tokyo Red Bean Pie: gentle red bean sweetness

Packed generously with domestic red bean paste, the Tokyo Red Bean Pie had the same perfect pastry as the signature, but felt heavier than the apple one. By the way, anko is the Japanese word for red bean paste — this pie has sweet red beans and soft paste inside. A total hit with older folks who love sweets 👍🏻

Splitting it in half, you can even see with your eyes the layered pastry harmonizing with the nutty, gentle sweetness unique to red beans — good 👍🏻 This one too keeps making me think of that gentle red-bean sweetness rather than anything artificial, so instead of coffee, which might overpower the bean flavor with its aroma, I'd strongly recommend milk.

Is Gyeongju Tokyo Pie worth the trip? Final verdict
A pie with a whole apple inside — I'd never had anything like it in my life, so it was fascinating, and delicious on top of that, which made me understand why so many people visit and buy it as gifts. It's also great to enjoy easily while traveling, and if you're tired of the same desserts every time, try a bite of Gyeongju Tokyo Pie. You'll feel a distinct sense of quality and uniqueness ❤
